RUMOR: Rivers not interested in LA move; 49ers in play?

I don't see it happening.

Tweet from David Barclay:

@DjamesIII: Per source, #Chargers QB Phillip Rivers is not interested in a move to LA, and #49ers are interested suitors.

Yes.

Draft a guy, let him set behind Rivers for a couple of seasons.

We're contenders right now and preparing for the future at the same time.

Swap them Alex Smith straight up.

Everybody wins. Alex is pissed at us, Rivers is pissed at them. He tells them our secrets, Rivers tells us theirs.

Done deal.

I like this idea.

notorious 01-16-2017 10:03 PM

Right now. Bring him in.

DaneMcCloud 01-16-2017 10:07 PM

Give them Smith, Ware, West, Maclin in exchange for a 2nd round pick and a case of San Diego .394.

Do it, Carl.

GoChargers 01-16-2017 10:08 PM

Hahahahaha.... eat a bag of dicks, Dean! Have fun selling LA on 0-16 next year without Rivers!

KChiefs1 01-16-2017 10:08 PM

I'd be good with this.

No shocker there. Rivers made that clear about 100 different times. Pretty much every time the rumor came up. I don't think he wants to move his family there.

dls6501 01-16-2017 10:10 PM

Please, please, PLEASE!!!!

Phillip for Alex, straight up. Throw in a draft pick, f*** it.

jjchieffan 01-16-2017 10:12 PM

LOL. he's not interested in moving to LA, but would be okay with a trade? He moves either way. In the end, I bet he stays a Charger or just flat out retires. But if he were to get traded, he would never be a Chief. For starters, there is NO WAY that San Diego trades him in the division, and 2, if they were to trade him in the division, you know that Elway would pull another Manning and swoop him out of from under us.

Mr_Tomahawk 01-16-2017 10:13 PM

The only reason we are in contention for the post season next year is because our division is ****ing falling apart. ...

Smith and a 3rd for Rivers.

Pretty sure the Chargers would have to eat a pretty big cap hit if they traded him. Not sure why they'd put themselves in that hole, especially when they're going to need star power in LA.

cosmo20002 01-16-2017 10:17 PM

It doesn't really matter if he's 'interested' in moving to LA. I don't believe he really has a choice, unless he wants to retire.

And if he's not interested in playing in LA, why would he be interested in playing in SF? Dumb story.

Because he'll just retire and they won't get shit.

If he retires, they get millions in cap relief. If they trade him, they're apparently going to take an $18M cap hit that's pure dead money. Why on earth would they do that?

Then again, this is the Chargers so why should I expect any of this to make sense. If he gives them an ultimatum they should just call his bluff, let him retire. Then they can draft a QB and have some cap space to build around the new QB.

Jerm 01-16-2017 10:23 PM

Elway just sitting there rubbing his grubby mitts together I'm sure....

Jerok 01-16-2017 10:24 PM

All I know is i want rivers or Romo next year.

What's his ultimatum, though? Don't move the team? I think that's done at this point.

Trade me or I'll retire.

kcpasco 01-16-2017 10:42 PM

Call his bluff. I doubt he would just walk away from millions of dollars.

Rain Man 01-16-2017 10:57 PM

How long would it take a veteran QB to get up to speed? Whether it's Rivers or Romo, would they be better than Alex in their first year? First two years? How would they or our offense have to change, and is it feasible at their ages?

EPodolak 01-16-2017 11:20 PM

Probably the same posts in the Mange right now.

George Liquor 01-16-2017 11:24 PM

If Rivers winds up in San Francisco, all that means is we are giving up our 3rd round pick for Kaepernick.

ghak99 01-16-2017 11:25 PM

He just doesn't want to unpack all his kids' shit.

Direckshun 01-16-2017 11:31 PM

Is there a better Andy Reid QB in the NFL than Philip Rivers?

You gotta figure Reid would give his left nut to have Rivers here.

Except they aren't worried about the salary cap since the Broncos cheat.

'Hamas' Jenkins 01-16-2017 11:38 PM

He doesn't want to move his family from SD to LA, but he'll sign off on a move to Kansas City.

Unless you're arguing he's going to retire, he's got to go somewhere, Hamas.

I still believe Andy Reid is in mad love with Alex Smith, but if Rivers wants to walk, both teams could benefit from the trade.

Or anywhere else. Right now he can keep his family right where they are, and play in LA. He could commute back and forth it ain't that far. And if Traffic is too much he could charter a Helicopter I am sure he can afford it.

Or just rent a big limo and have some quiet time in the back. It would be nice to get out of the house with those 19 children, I bet.

Titty Meat 01-17-2017 12:06 AM

I'd rather have Romo

RobBlake 01-17-2017 12:33 AM

Smith is actually the perfect QB for Reid.. that is.. if Smith knew how to take the damn ball down the field and score.

When asked about that tweet:

Kevin Acee ‏@sdutKevinAcee 1h1 hour ago
This was news to Rivers. Also, 49ers don't have GM/coach. He has no-trade clause. Believe me, he'll take LA over SF.

Not saying I believe the rumor, but let's dissect that Kevin Acee tweet.

1. The no-trade clause is for the player's discretion. All that means is that the team can't trade him without his consent. In this rumor, they are saying that Rivers is instigating the trade discussion. That point is moot.

2. Any time I read the words "believe me," I think of the Supreme Leader who once told me Mexico is going to pay for a wall. That phrase has lost its luster, unfortunately.

I would have thought a gunslinging, risk-taker like Rivers would be the opposite of a Reid QB. What's your thinking here?

scho63 01-17-2017 03:02 PM

You guys wanting us to sign a 35 or 36 or 38 year old QB for next year are NUTS! No Rivers, no Tony Romo and no Drew Brees

Uhhhhh I'd take Drew Brees for a year

notorious 01-17-2017 03:04 PM

Alex Smith, a 1st, and a 3rd.

That is worth 3 years of production.

If they won't take Alex, take the 3rd off the table.

Yeah no, I'll take a legit chance at a ring, VS Rebuilding for 2-4 years.
