Andy Reid, Coach Of The Year by Sporting News.

Andy Reid Named "Coach of the Year" by Sporting News; Four Chiefs Named All-Pro

Every year, since 1947, the folks over at Sporting News have announced their NFL “Coach of the Year” award, and this year the winner is Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid.

Reid led the Chiefs to a 12-4 record and won the franchise’s first division title since 2010.

Here’s what they had to say about Reid, via SportingNews.com:

“Andy Reid is back on top of the NFL coaching heap for the first time in 14 seasons. Reid, in a close race over several strong contenders, was voted Sporting News Coach of the Year for his work with the Chiefs in 2016.

Reid is the sixth three-time winner of SN's award. He joins Mike Smith, Joe Gibbs, Chuck Knox, Don Shula and Paul Brown. Reid also follows Knox (Rams, Seahawks) and Shula (Colts, Dolphins) in winning with multiple teams.”

In addition to the bringing home the “Coach of the Year” award, the Chiefs also had four players named to the Sporting News All-Pro team.

Here’s what was said about each of the Chiefs who were honored this year:

Tight end Travis Kelce: “Kelce earned 64 percent of NFL coaches' votes. The tight end led his team in receiving yards for the second time in his four-year career. He might just make a habit of that.”

Cornerback Marcus Peters: “So, turns out Peters' incredible rookie season in 2015 was no fluke. He was just as impressive in 2016 and, according to some NFL coaches, was the league's best cornerback. That's high praise for a second-year player at such a loaded position, but Peters' impact can't be denied.”

Safety Eric Berry: The seven-year pro finished third in SN's Defensive Player of the Year voting, and first in All-Pro safety voting. The plays he made against the NFC-champion Falcons in Week 13 literally won the game for the Chiefs, who know they can count on Berry to continue to lead their stingy defense.

Punt returner Tyreek Hill: “Not bad for a rookie: Hill in 2016 led the NFL in yards per punt return (15.2), punt return yardage (592), punt return touchdowns (tied with two) and posted the longest punt return of the season, a 95-yarder. Perhaps most impressive, he led the league in all-purpose yards including returns, with almost 300 more yards than Seattle's Tyler Lockett, who placed second. Safe to say Kansas City found an impact player in the fifth round of the 2016 draft.”

All four of those players were also named to the AP All-Pro team.

About as deserving as James Holmes winning Good Samaritan of the Year for the state of Colorado. This mother ****er has the clock management skill of a 9 year old playing Madden on exhibition.

Trivers 01-26-2017 05:11 PM

What?

The CP General Managers state we should fire or at least strip of play calling duties.

Congrats!

And yet I seem to recall that Reid's Chiefs beat the Falcons this year, in Atlanta.

Deberg_1990 01-26-2017 05:17 PM

Andy Reid is not the problem.

He gets as much mileage out of A Smith than anyone could possibly get.

We all know a ceiling has been reached with Smith.

And Reid's Chiefs will get the last laugh next weekend when those Foulcons are sitting at home and Reid will be coaching in the Super Bowl.

I read this three times and it might be the codeine in my cough syrup, but try as I might, I don't get it...

Andy Reid dragged a team that was 20th in offense and 24th on defense to an AFC West title.

The margin for victory was so razor thin most weeks, only an elite coach could have pulled off 12-4.

He's a magnificent coach.

BS!

Andy Reid is reluctant to a change for the QB position.

His priorities aren't in order. He is too loyal to a fault over a C QB instead of rationalizing and coming to a conclusion that he isn't good enough. **** him. He primarily accountable for our failures at the QB position.

chiefzilla1501 01-26-2017 05:36 PM

I think this is a regular season award. From that standpoint, it's a sensible choice.

The problem is that he choked in the playoffs.

There's not a single coach in the NFL who would change starting quarterbacks after going 12-4.

Mike Shanahan is a HOF offensive coach and he refused to move on from Plummer until they missed the playoffs.

So it will be with Andy.

I do agree but......

Remember when the Ravens won the SB with Trent Dilfer? Who was the QB the next season?

This is true, but Dilfer didn't have a big contract at the time. He was a backup QB to start that SB season.

Andy's heels are dug in for at least one more year.

the team kept themselves close. atlanta could have called for a field goal. just like seattle could have called a run instead of a pass :D

Obviously The Sporting News doesn't agree with the Alex Smith Apologists' hypothesis that Andy Reid's coaching is holding Alex back from being a great QB.

The irony is that I think Ned is a far worse manager than Reid is a head football coach, yet Ned has won two pennants and a World Series, while Reid's only won a single NFC Championship since becoming a head coach in 1999.

He's right though. 12 wins with all the injuries and that schedule is a hell of an accomplishment. Props to Sutton too.
