Quick! Name the last great Chief whose career wasn't wasted by this franchise.

Cutting Charles has brought out the "His career was wasted by Herm, Pioli, etc., just like Hali and DJ".

Seriously, this franchise has wasted careers since 1970.

Damn straight, Milk.

How many probowlers (well deserved) did that 2-14 team have? Such a waste.

Oh, wait. The OP asked about "great Chiefs". This wouldn't count. But the Chiefs really did elevate his career far beyond any reasonable expectations.

So those are acceptable answers as well - they weren't so beat to shit that they could still play at a high level after they left.

Ok.

We're talking about 1970 and later, so Jerrel probably doesn't count.

But now that you mention it, Dustin Colquitt counts and he's got a great argument. He punted a lot during the Pioli years, much more so than any other team would have done. So KC has given him a great platform to exhibit his craft. He wouldn't have as many great performances with a team like New England or Pittsburgh.

Allen and Montana were hall of famers so the franchise couldn't ruin them. I think DT ruined the chiefs more than vice versa with the Monday night Meltdown, not showing up for playoff games and dying.

Keeping DT instead of Neil was a no-brainer at the time, but in hindsight, with things turning out the way they did...

Been a few Chiefs who have left the franchise and gone on to be All-Pro (Rich Gannon, Joe Horn) and a handful who have won SBs (Neil Smith, Lawrence Tynes off the top of my head) since Allen retired.

He won a SB w/ Baltimore, and due to his hit on Brady, we ended up w/ Matt Cassel for 4 seasons.

I'm sure he didn't intentionally mean to do that.

But everybody has their own perspective and if you want to look at it that way; that's your perogative.

I just think this scenario was about the Chiefs getting unlucky more than anything.

Tony Gonzalez

But, to play Devil's Advocate, technically Herm and Pioli tried to prolong Charles career. Remember guys like Thomas Jones for example? Charles really didn't take off until RAC was HC.

However, I guess Charles was wasted if the super bowl is the measuring stick.

Amnorix 03-01-2017 08:50 AM

This thread befuddles me. Do players who don't win SBs have their careers "wasted"? If so, the vast majority of players have "wasted" careers.

Seems ridiculous.

Hmmm, Rich Gannon didn't get a big contract until he went to Oakland. Joe Horn wasn't a top earner while here, either. For instance. I mean, they did receive a paycheck while here...but it's not like the Chiefs are going to back the truck up for you.

Unless you play safety or Guard.

Or if you're an average QB with a penchant for turnovers (Cassel) or throwing at the sidelines (Smiff).
