Great news: NFL loosens rules on celebration

Finally the no fun league is becoming fun again.

Quote:

Goodell is reportedly expected to inform the league’s owners that players can now do a number of things they could not previously do without incurring penalties.

Among the allowed moves are group celebrations, the use of the football as a prop (as opposed to a simple spike), falling to the ground, and when applicable, making snow angels, according to Pelissero.

sources close to the situation confirm that no one still knows what is, and is not a catch. or holding, or DPI/OPI.....

sounds like someone finally got high and loosened up

No(w) Fun League

Also, the 75-man cut down is no longer. Teams will carry 90 players on the roster throughout the entire preseason.

AssEaterChief 05-23-2017 11:00 AM

It's not going to make the product better

Rain Man 05-23-2017 11:03 AM

The NFL is preparing for the Mahomes era.

Lol, no shit.

The league also passed a rule change moving the overtime period from 15 minutes to 10 minutes and eliminated the 75-man cutdown rule. Rosters will now go from 90 men to 53 before the start of the regular season.
The NFL's owners are approved a rule adding a second player who can returned from the injured reserve list, giving more teams flexibility in roster moves.
I like all of those moves. It gives fringe guys an extra opportunity to show that they belong. But damn, talk about black Monday right before the season. That's going to be a ton of guys on the street.

Did any/many guys ever get picked up by another team during training camp if they were in the first round of cuts? My guess is that's pretty rare, so if that's the case, then this is indeed a great opportunity for them.

jjchieffan 05-23-2017 11:19 AM

Interesting. Not sure if I like the shortened overtime period. That is likely going to cause more games to end in ties. I guess I just don't see the need for that move. I'm not sure about the elimination of the cut down to 75. The guys in that cutdown aren't making an NFL roster anyway. What benefit is there to keeping them on the roster an extra week? I definitely like the idea of moving a second player off of injured reserve. A team shouldn't be have to lose a player for the season or sacrifice a roster spot for half the season because a player suffered an 8 week injury in week one or the preseason. I am also glad to see some loosening up on the celebration penalties. They were getting ridiculous.

Sucks to be a charity of the offenders fine recipients.

dirk digler 05-23-2017 11:24 AM

At least that is something but I don't really like the OT rule change I think that is dumb IMO.

As far as the injured reserve rule change I don't understand why they don't just dump the whole thing and what is the purpose for it anyway? If a player gets hurt he should be able to come back whenever he is healthy, that is the way it is in all the other sports.

Rudy tossed tigger's salad 05-23-2017 11:27 AM

These are good moves

MagicHef 05-23-2017 11:32 AM

"...when applicable, making snow angels..."

I want to see someone get penalized for a lack of snow during their snow angel celebration.

I think the original purpose was to keep teams from using IR to stash players with phantom injuries and get around the 53 man roster limit. If you put him on IR, then he's done for the year. But that also penalizes those who are actually hurt and could return. So, allowing teams to bring back a couple gives them a workable middle ground.

ROFL You won't like it if it's Talib.

okiedokieokoye 05-23-2017 12:06 PM

Seriously, it's going to be a ****ing blast out there now. Those boys...just playing and horsing around. Jokes. Friendships. So much fun.

Buns 05-23-2017 12:07 PM

I would like for them to nix the gameday inactives and let the whole 53 dress for games. Probably never happen though.

Every time Talib makes a snow angel, a child dies of a curable disease.

Dayze 05-23-2017 12:23 PM

sadly, every time Talib reads a book, a child is cured of cancer.

there's no hope for those kids.

Hydrae 05-23-2017 12:31 PM

Don't think it will go into effect this year but they are also talking about allowing players with concussions to not count against the 53 man roster total. That is a good idea as it will take some of the pressure off of the players and teams to have them continue to play or have a wasted roster spot for a few weeks.

DaFace 05-23-2017 12:35 PM

BUT THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!

Oh, man. I just realized the Broncos' strategy in drafting Bolles. It'll be impossible to label him with a concussion since he can't pass the protocol even when healthy.

tk13 05-23-2017 12:37 PM

The most interesting rule to watch might be the OT rule. Making both teams get a possession if you only get a FG has seemingly increased ties. You'd think shortening OT would make it even worse.

You could also get a situation where one team goes on a 7+ minute drive and kicks a FG. Almost puts the other team in a 2 minute drill situation from the start. Is that fair? You definitely want the ball first and the ability to milk the clock.

I'd have rather seen a scenario where each team gets 1 possession and thats it.

You should see plenty of those in training camp when he is lined up against Pickston.

They also need to eliminate the practice squad and expand the roster instead, plus eliminate the gameday inactives. That way you can get your development players some experience during blowouts or whatever.

chiefzilla1501 05-23-2017 03:06 PM

Wow they seriously have to cite specific examples of allowable celebrations?

How about this... If you're not delaying the game, not doing anything obscene, and not blatantly taunting someone else... It's fair game.

And taunting is a much bigger concern. Enforcing a penalty after a td is annoying. Enforcing a penalty on a play affects games. This is much ado about nothing until they relax the silly rules on taunting.

The IR rule is because of Gronk not being able to return. Dumbass NFL sucking it off to the Pats again.

I think I'll be plenty happy if Talib is penalized for celebrating a TD.

Ming the Merciless 05-23-2017 05:03 PM

cool maybe our WR's might get to celebrate in 2018

KChiefs1 05-23-2017 05:19 PM

OT rule is pure shit.

holy cow that cut down day rule, no more 75 man cut down

1 day all teams go from 90 to 53. That is going to be a massacre for players

GloucesterChief 05-23-2017 05:56 PM

Now if they would only get rid of the taunting rule.

Ironic part of that is that the word talib in Arabic literally means student.

Trent Green GOAT 05-23-2017 10:04 PM

Perhaps the NFL remembered they are entertainment?

Right on target, Mr. Rain Man. The Chiefs players better start brushing up on their spins and pop & lock moves 'cause were about to go FULL Mahomes II: Championship Boogaloo up in this bitch and all over the NFL's ass.

Mile High Mania 05-24-2017 06:38 AM
