Looks interesting. Have not read the book, but the trailer looks good.

patteeu 12-04-2017 04:04 PM

That looks like it could be great if it has a good story. I'm ready to go.

unlurking 12-04-2017 04:10 PM

Yeah, I think I'm going to read the book over the holidays...

I'm going to watch. Sci-Fi kicks ass when done correctly.

ShiftyEyedWaterboy 12-04-2017 06:10 PM

The book is one of my all time favorites. Really great.

ShiftyEyedWaterboy 12-04-2017 11:26 PM

Kinnaman looks a little too pretty to play Kovacs, IMHO. I think Morgan said he envisioned him as a Benicio Del Toro type of guy. Who knows. Maybe he pulls it off. I’ve been wanting some kind of adaptation for this for awhile.

bowener 12-05-2017 09:18 AM

The scant amount of exterior shots looks a lot like the Blade Runner universe... which I love. I'm in.

unlurking 12-05-2017 07:06 PM

I got that vibe too. Just started book 1 of the trilogy. Busy week, but should finish this weekend.

Miles 12-06-2017 07:40 PM

Really enjoyed the books so great to see this turning up as a series on Netflix.

Bowser 12-06-2017 08:05 PM

Downloaded the first book on Audible and I'm about an hour in. Really digging it so far.

Buck 12-06-2017 08:29 PM

That does look pretty cool but I am not a big fan of the lead actor. Can't think of his name.

Recent blog from Richard K Morgan about a set visit a bit less than a year ago. Makes me more excited to see this than anything Netflix could put into a trailer...

Now available for streaming. I watched the first episode. It was pretty good. I'm going to continue watching, see what happens.

Icon 02-02-2018 06:36 PM

Show became available today. Just watched the first two episodes. Pretty good so far. Definitely has a Blade Runner feel to it. The cast/acting is solid. The special effects are superb. Definitely looking forward to watching more episodes.

Miles 02-02-2018 09:23 PM

I’ve been looking forward to this all week so hope it holds up.

SAGA45 02-02-2018 09:24 PM

There's a slight Bruce Wayne and Alfred element to it as well. Pretty cool so far

starting the first episode and it’s directed by Miguel Sapochnik. The director of GOT that did Hardhome, battle of the badtards etc.

RINGLEADER 02-02-2018 11:08 PM

Watching first episode now.

Seems like they're trying to cram a lot of set-up into the first half hour. But it is interesting enough to keep going. Doesn't seem like the best thing ever but agree it has sort of a Blade Runner vibe.

RINGLEADER 02-02-2018 11:43 PM

Changed my mind. Lots of stuff exploding and silly dialogue about a future investigation I don’t give two f’s about. Unless someone tells me it gets seriously better after episode one I’m going to give this one a pass.

Interesting. Thought the first episode was quite solid for being mostly necessary setup and intros.

Yeah, me too, I really should have more self control. There were some hokey bits and some things to nit pick here and there but I did enjoy the show.

Frazod 02-03-2018 02:00 PM

Started watching this last night. Very interesting. I like the Blade Runner feel.

I didn't realize going into this that the episodes are directed and written by so many different people. Not that there is a giant group working on each episode, almost each episode is done by a different group. It makes the show uneven. So sometimes it's schlocky and hokey. Sometimes the fight scenes are crap and the dialogue is poor. There is a fight in zero gravity that is just terrible, for instance. Max Headroom shows up at one point (it's him - I checked) and that goes about as you'd expect. The season finale has way too much moralizing in it and the SJW aspects are a bit too on the nose. I hope they can put together a second season with better overall quality and a tighter creative group but I don't know if that's possible.

Bowser 02-03-2018 05:21 PM

Going to fire this up. Feel like I'm coming down with something and staying in tonight sounds like a fantastic idea.

007 02-03-2018 08:28 PM

Did two episodes and I'm just not feeling it. Found myself getting bored.

ShiftyEyedWaterboy 02-04-2018 12:19 PM

Anyone watched it that read the books? How does it compare? How much did they deviate? Where did they stop? Also, was Hendrix in it? I’m gonna be disappointed if it isn’t.

AssEaterChief 02-04-2018 12:51 PM

There are some things I like about it but it can be hard to follow.

Going to ride the rest of the season out and see what happens.

mnchiefsguy 02-04-2018 02:46 PM

Watched the first three episodes last night. Definitely a Blade Runner feel to it.

Only read the first book. Gonna go back and read it again since it has been awhile, and pick up the other books for my kindle.

Really liking it so far.

I'm the opposite - I did two episodes and I'm loving it. Probably helps that I've read it, though. Kovacs and Miriam Bancroft don't fit my mental image, but that will happen. They've done a pretty decent job staying true to the source material so far, even with the subtle changes they've made.

I downloaded the second book and will probably dig into that starting this week.

kepp 02-05-2018 11:25 AM

After the first episode my wife and I looked at each other and said, "That was weird." Then we decided to watch the next episode to see if we could start making sense of it. I'm liking it more and more now.

BigRichard 02-06-2018 01:54 PM

I am about 4 1/2 episodes in and absolutely love it. The world building is excellent. The story is A+. I also think the acting has been great, and that comes from a guy that wasn't thrilled about the main character actor. He has sucked in just about everything I have seen him in but this role fits his acting.

keg in kc 02-06-2018 05:14 PM

Through 8, really like it so far. I wasn't sure how it could possibly be translated from page to screen, but they've done about as good a job as I could imagine worldbuilding it. I've heard 9 and 10 were really good, so we'll see.

Simply Red 02-08-2018 12:19 AM

I guess I'll queue this one, a respected friend stated I need to watch it.

Netflix’s original series quality has gotten a lot better in the last year or two.

Wife and I finished it last night. I think they pretty much nailed the casting all around. Each actor really fit the role they played. Some pretty big holes in the story, but I enjoyed it pretty damn well overall. Gonna go find the books now and read them. Have read other things by Morgan, so expected some odd shit to go down.

Nice. Since Mackie is taking over as Kovacs, I assume they're going to use the next book Fallen Angels as the story?

keg in kc 07-27-2018 06:08 PM

I would assume so, but who knows.

Bowser 07-27-2018 06:51 PM

They could go anywhere with it, for sure.

I loved Altered Carbon as a book. The future noir setting and story really clicked with me. I was pumped to get into Fallen Angels, but I never could for some reason. Everything about it usually appeals to my sci-fi side, but I just couldn't finish it. I keep false starting when I try to get back and going with the book.

why did Joel Kinnaman not want to do season 2?

It’s still going to be the same man, same backstory? Just put a different guy in like we won’t notice?

The third book feels a little closer to the first. The second is kinda standalone, too, so you can skip it tbh.

About halfway through season 2 and I'm not loving it so far. It's such a tonal departure from season 1 that it just seems completely disconnected (yes, I've read the books; I know...).

But I don't think I really dug season 1 until the 2nd time I saw it, either.

Season 1 was much better. The lore in season 2 was interesting, but the plotline was just too easy imo

I'm about half way through season 3, enjoying it enough to keep watching. The quality from episode to episode is more even than in the past.

Season 3? I must have missed one because I couldn't make it through season 2. Maybe if I knew the backstory on the characters it would help, I just don't find them interesting.

I haven't watched the movie yet. I have a lot of stuff still to watch. Somewhat along the lines of this series, Netflix could do a series based on the Well Of Souls stories by Jack L. Chalker. The guy put out a ton of material that involves people swapping bodies. Here's a summary from wikipedia:

The Well World series is a series of science fiction novels by Jack L. Chalker. It involves a planet-sized supercomputer known as the Well of Souls that builds our reality on top of an underlying one of greater complexity but smaller size. The computer was built by a now-extinct race, the Markovians, who developed the Well of Souls with the goal of creating a new species that would transcend their own. The Well World is the planet that houses the Well of Souls, and it exists within the original Markovian reality. Its surface was used as an experimental site where the Markovians tested their species designs before sending the successful ones into the new universe to populate planets. Humans are one of many such designed species who now live in the "real" world. During the time period of the novels, the Well World has been abandoned and left on its own for an unknown length of time. The books mainly follow a mysterious character known as Nathan Brazil, who has an (initially) unknown connection to the Well World. The books are adventures that follow Brazil and a changing cast of secondary characters through a series of visits to the Well World over a period of hundreds (and millions) of years.

Just like the books where the first one was great, and darker than the tv series, and the 2nd and 3rd were not as good.
