Alex Smith expresses his desire to return to Chiefs in 2018

Quote:

The Kansas City Chiefs' season ended earlier than they anticipated.

The No. 4 seed in the AFC coughed up an 18-point lead in a 22-21 loss to the Tennessee Titans on Saturday, setting up an offseason of uncertainty.

Chief among that will be quarterback Alex Smith.

Despite leading Kansas City to a 10-6 record and AFC West title, the Chiefs are said to be open to trading the veteran pivot. The team set up its future by trading up in April's draft to select quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Smith has just one year left on his four-year, $68-million contract, and intends to see it through.

"Yeah, I mean, you kidding me? I signed the contract," Smith said when asked after the game if he'd like to stay in Kansas City
, according to Nick Shook of NFL.com.

"I'm under contract for another year, so like I said, I'm not thinking about anything else. Right now, obviously disappointed. Like I said, I felt like we had a good chance, and it's gone."

Under Smith's direction, the Chiefs raced out to a 5-0 start to the season, hit a lull in which they lost six of their next seven games, then won their final four contests.

On Saturday, Smith threw two first-half touchdowns to give Kansas City a 21-3 cushion, but went 5 of 10 for 33 yards in the second half.

The 13-year veteran wasn't prepared to dive further into his future so soon after the loss.

"The game just ended," Smith said. "We'll get into all of that in the next couple of weeks."

jd1020 01-06-2018 10:56 PM

Well, duh.

The Chiefs are the closest thing to carrying his worthless ass to a Lombardi before retirement.

The team hes going to end up on is undoubtedly going to be much much worse.

Alex was not the top of his position. He might have had a higher QB rating, but he did not have a better overall season than the elite qbs in this league.

Top qb in the NFL does not lose six of seven and then pass for 35 yards in the second half while choking a playoff game.

Andy Reid is a coach who can get you to the playoffs almost every ****ing year.

In the postseason players win games, not coaches. I firmly believe that. That's why the great players in this league make their names in the postseason.

We've never had a player like that. Maybe we do now. Maybe.

The Andy Reid hate is way overrated around here. Put the alpha dog at QB and it's a different story.

FringeNC 01-06-2018 11:03 PM

All I can say is that we better use his cap space wisely because he wasn't the problem. Sure, he's no HOF'er, but JFC he lead the league in QB rating.

It'll be an outrage if Smith is thrown under the bus but Sutton keeps his job.

This is why I never believed. Not for a second.

Alex had his chance to get this team the #1 seed and he blew it. Then he blew the #2 seed.

As soon as those things happened there was no reason to believe he'd get it done at the next opportunity.

MVPs step up and make mvp play when mattered. Championship caliber QBs thrive on that environment and excel when called upon.

Alex does none of it.

And he failed to lead the offense to a TD against the Giants. Failed in the last two minutes of the Giants, Buffalo, Jets, and Titans games.

He had a good season. Not elite, not great. And he certainly did not have a killer instinct when it game to putting your team on your back in the last two minutes (other than the Washington game).

Time to move on.

This. The best and most memorable game of this whole season was a game that didn't matter who won or lost.

Mahomes led the GW drive in his first start on the road playing with backups against the hated Donks and the very next week Alex fails to do the same at home in a playoff game.

And he was 0-4 in the regular season with a chance to win the game or tie it.

Give me Tyreek Hill and I'd lead the NFL in 40+ yard TD's.

You just try, really hard to overthrow him.

Not saying you aren’t right. Nor is it annoying. But what does this shit even matter when we’ve lost 11 of our last 12 home playoff games?

All that stat you posted tells me is he got us home field advantage in the playoffs more than previous qbs, and sucked just as equally as never getting the win.

Don’t post this again as it doesn’t help your main movement.

Actually it does. It proves he's played on better teams and wasted more opportunities with those teams.

This was a Super Bowl caliber team the last three seasons. And Smith wasted it.

He’s not coming back. And even if Andy wanted him to come back, cap space is still an issue and releasing and or trading Alex solves the problem. There’s also no reason to let Mahomes sit another season. He will now of had one full season, and a new full offseason as the main guy to get us rolling. Alex is gone. It’s just not inked yet
