Let's talk about 'The Room' by Tommy Wiseau

I just learned about this movie a few weeks back. Supposed to be 'the best worst movie ever'... The Disaster Artist (Franco brothers, Seth Rogen) just came out not long ago as a film which was about the making of 'The Room' from 2003.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...eRoomMovie.jpg

The film has a cult following to this day. So I watched some YouTube videos to figure out what the buzz was all about... why do people love this terrible movie? And I quickly realized their reasoning.

Some highlights:
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/pKAwXLVxuZQ?rel=0" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe>

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/_8vUXKIQsB0?rel=0" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe>

So, I finally got around to watching the whole film and it truly is the most golden piece of shit to ever grace a movie screen. I still haven't checked out the Franco brothers' and Seth Rogen's film based around the original, but it has been positively regarded by many.

Has anyone else saw this? If so, thoughts? If not, do you plan to?

It really is a fascinating piece of art by Mr. Wiseau, with an incredible backstory if you ever become interested enough to look into it.

Sassy Squatch 01-13-2018 05:28 PM

The flower shop scene and "I did not hit her" are true masterpieces of the worst kind.

stumppy 01-13-2018 05:29 PM

Too soon after the Chiefs post season.

pugsnotdrugs19 01-13-2018 05:33 PM

If you just watch the first 15 minutes, you'll think you're watching a really bad porno.

There's no way this can be the worst movie ever made. If there's a remake that involves Seth Rogan, then by definition that movie is worse. Seth Rogan makes everything worse.

Just watch the vids, Rain Man. I know you haven't if you don't undoubtedly agree it's the best worst movie ever.

rydogg58 01-13-2018 07:31 PM

I do not think any movie could possibly take the title of worst bad movie ever away from "The Miami Connection".

Mennonite 01-13-2018 07:43 PM

This is not the best worst movie ever. That distinction goes to the classic Samurai Cop (1991).

Fish 01-13-2018 07:47 PM

It's no Hard Ticket to Hawaii...

EPodolak 01-13-2018 07:50 PM

I saw the Disaster Artist the other day - worth checking out. Wiseau is a one of a kind.

Chiefspants 01-13-2018 07:55 PM

Samurai Cop tops this in terms of bad movies in my opinion.

But when it comes to bad actors, no one tops Wiseau or his story.

Mennonite 01-13-2018 08:03 PM

A lot of the "best worst movies" that people mention are just really boring, imo. I don't really give a shit about watching something like that. I'm glad to see people mentioning movies like Miami Connection and Hard Ticket to Hawaii; gloriously awful and endlessly entertaining. Troll 2 (1990) is also a worthy entry.

For those of you who enjoy bad movies, I recommend joining the torrent tracker Cinemageddon.

This.

The Room is kinda fascinating. I saw a midnight show out here a few years ago that Wiseau hosted. It was fun because of all the fan interaction, but boy. It was difficult to sit through at times. I don't know the running time off hand, but it felt so long.

What's amazing is how something like this can basically never happen again. The chances that a total lunatic with 6 million dollars to blow wanting to make and star in a movie while having zero talent and infinite confidence... It's hard to be believe it happened once.

You ever hear of Neil Breen?

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm3718935/

How about James Nguyen? He's the guy who did Birdemic: Shock and Terror

And also a guy named John De Hart who did an awesomely bad action movie with the legendary Wings Hauser called Road to Revenge (1993)

It happened in this movie too. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dream_for_an_Insomniac

Tiffany DeBartolo - Eddie's Daughter wrote and directed this awful vanity pic, although she didn't star in it. Daddy's money got Jennifer Anniston and Ione Skye. But the dialog is so cringingly terrible.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/YCd4Hcpn-YI" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The first 1/4 of the movie or so is black and white - until Ione Skye's love interest walks into the coffee shop where she works - then it turns to glorious color. Ughhhh

I've never seen so many lines of dialogue looped into a scene as the flower shop one. Combined with the cashier looking right at him and saying "Oh it's you Johnny, I didn't recognize you"...

LMAO

Birdemic is great at being bad, but it was made on a shoestring. China has a LOTR rip-off that a friend of mine got paid to work on that is close to the Room...but it cost around $130 million(!!!):

I don't know about that.

Firstly I'm a MST3K fan, and there are some amazingly great bad movies. I'm just one of those guys who watches movies like this.

The truth is that it's all Wiseau that's fascinating. The movie has nothing else to amuse you even as a 'so bad it's good' viewing. If you put any normal bad actor in his place it's just a really boring bad movie. It's all just HIS performance.

Yeah, I'm critiquing a movie's 'so bad it's good' status.

Christ I suck.

And the The Dark Knight without Heath Ledger would be stale and boring too

I don't agree. I think a number of method actors could have done that role as it was written.

Heath Ledger is/was not the greatest actor in the world, and the way that character was written had a massive impact on how it was portrayed. Certainly nobody could have followed it, but that could have been the case with a number of guys.

It's not like he just pulled that whole character out of his ass. The Joker, as a character, ALWAYS sells tickets.

Not so much the writing, he literally killed himself after playing the part, he isolated himself in a hotel w/ his drugs to make himself ****ing crazy. But The Room wouldn't be as good without Denny or the other terrible actors. I do agree The Room would not be memorable without Tommy Wiseau. That accent and delivery of the dialogue is priceless.

Sometimes, when the lighting hits just right, Lisa looks like Anna Faris to me. Gives it a bit of Scary Movie feel.

Sure, but it also takes the determination and absolute conviction that you are a gifted artist. Not to mention his delusional point of view. The average talentless millionaire would defer to professionals. He wouldn't compromise on his insane vision.
