Rubidium
Rubidium is a chemical element with symbol Rb and atomic number 37. Rubidium is a soft, silvery-white metallic element of the alkali metal group, with a standard atomic weight of 85.4678. Elemental rubidium is highly reactive, with properties similar to those of other alkali metals, including rapid oxidation in air. On Earth, natural rubidium comprises two isotopes: 72% is the stable isotope, 85Rb; 28% is the slightly radioactive 87Rb, with a half-life of 49 billion years—more than three times longer than the estimated age of the universe.
German chemists Robert Bunsen and Gustav Kirchhoff discovered rubidium in 1861 by the newly developed technique, flame spectroscopy. Rubidium's compounds have various chemical and electronic applications. Rubidium metal is easily vaporized and has a convenient spectral absorption range, making it a frequent target for laser manipulation of atoms. Rubidium is not a known nutrient for any living organisms. However, rubidium ions have the same charge as potassium ions, and are actively taken up and treated by animal cells in similar ways. |

The species lepidolite is largely used for the manufacture of lithium and rubidium salts.

Just radioactive, that's all.

49 billion years is a long time.

Kinetics of rubidium extraction by 4-tert-butyl-2-(α-methylbenzy) phenol (t-BAMBP)/sulfonated kerosene in brine solutions were investigated using the rising single drop technique. Parameters affecting the mass transfer mechanism, including the interfacial area, initial alkalinity of aqueous phase, concentration of rubidium ions and t-BAMBP, and temperature were studied. The results indicated that the process of extraction was controlled by the diffusion process, while the chemical reaction occurred at the interfacial area. Dynamic equation of the extraction system, Re = 2.901 × 10−5[Rb+]1.022[OH−]1.179[t-BAMBP]0.991 was obtained by non-linear fitting the experimental data. Moreover, a new mechanism of the rubidium extraction with t-BAMBP/sulfonated kerosene was proposed.

I don't know anything about rubidium but barium is also a soft, silvery alkaline earth metal - and it sucks balls.

Hopefully Wally reads this thread and gets what I get out of it...
Blah blah blah, stupid words, blah blah blah... OH SHIT! INSTEAD OF LETTING OFF THE GAS I SHOULD RUBIT-INUM! |
