NFL Schedule Release: Inside the Process That Gave Us the 2018 256-Game Slate

NEW YORK — As with most things in the National Football League, “news” is a word to be taken very lightly. Take the annual release of the NFL schedule, which happens in a lull period before the NFL draft, designed to give some breathless coverage for the programming-hungry NFL Network. The channel was running a countdown clock in the corner of the screen on its Thursday TV shows, showing how many hours, minutes and seconds were left before the release of the schedule Thursday at 8 p.m. ET.

“Really, the process couldn’t be more boring,” the schedule czar, NFL vice president Howard Katz, said late Thursday inside the small, rectangular scheduling den, The Val Pinchbeck Room, on the fifth floor of the NFL offices on Park Avenue. “But there’s such an incredible fascination with the end result.”

Yup. 3/4 at home. Raiders*2 and Charger after a great bye week slot. Mahomes will be all warmed up.

Best22 04-19-2018 11:49 PM

Why do the Broncos ALWAYS open the season at home?

Do they have a pact with the NFL?

I like that we open with the Chargers.

They will be without Liuget, so more running opportunities. The Chargers are the main competition in the West, so would be nice to start off with a win there.

I like where the bye falls. Seemed like they were getting the bye week 5 or 6 recently and it wasn't really helping. Has NE ever been to KC? KCI must have Bob Craft's plane banned from it's airspace or something.

Way to early for predictions but it looks like 10 - 6 to me;

Sunday, Sept. 9 | at Los Angeles Chargers; Win
Sunday, Sept. 16 | at Pittsburgh Steelers; Loss
Sunday, Sept. 23 | San Francisco 49ers; Win
Monday, Oct. 1 | at Denver Broncos; Loss
Sunday, Oct. 7 | Jacksonville Jaguars; Loss
Sunday, Oct. 14 | at New England Patriots; Loss
Sunday, Oct. 21 | Cincinnati Bengals; Win
Sunday, Oct. 28 | Denver Broncos; Win
Sunday, Nov. 4 | at Cleveland Browns; Win
Sunday, Nov. 11 | Arizona Cardinals; Win

Monday, Nov. 19 | at Los Angeles Rams (Mexico City); Loss
Sunday, Nov. 25 | BYE WEEK
Sunday, Dec. 2 | at Oakland Raiders; Win
Sunday, Dec. 9 | Baltimore Ravens; Win

Thursday, Dec. 13 | Los Angeles Chargers; Win
Sunday, Dec. 23 | at Seattle Seahawks; Loss
Sunday, Dec. 30 | Oakland Raiders; Win

jjchieffan 04-20-2018 07:22 AM

Interesting thing I noticed about the Thursday night games. They seemed to try to give the road teams a shorter distance to travel. Raiders San Fran, Eagles Giants, Dallas New Orleans. The longest trip I saw was the Chargers coming to Arrowhead. But it's not like we have teams all that close on our schedule. Denver is probably the closest and we already have a Monday night game at pile high with then.

smithandrew051 04-20-2018 07:33 AM

If we can start 3-3 (or better), we should take the division. The schedule eases up a lot after that.

JoeyChuckles 04-20-2018 07:48 AM

Chiefs don't play Thanksgiving weekend. That will be kind of weird, but good for them probably.

stumppy 04-20-2018 07:49 AM

I want a damn win in Pittsburg.

I have a friend who is a major Steelers fan and I'm sick and tired of his smug, 'Aw, maybe next time' comments. He's the kind of guy who loses his shit when they lose. Breaks shit, throws his team gear in the trash, cusses them.
I want the Chiefs to go there and beat them like a red headed stepchild.

RunKC 04-20-2018 07:56 AM

I like that the Chiefs only have 1 back-to-back road schedule in consecutive weeks and it’s the first 2 games. Just get it over with early before wear and tear kicks in.

They play back-to-back games later but they get the bye in between.

Steelers and Rapeman are a year older. Mahomes is the difference this time. We get the win.

You know the home/road schedule is predetermined by season ending finish, yeah? I mean, you can view the 2019 breakdown of home/away now with the exception of 2 teams (2 AFC Teams, 1 road and 1 away) ... http://www.fbschedules.com/nfl-19/20...l-schedule.php

You can view 2020 as well https://www.pro-football-reference.c...0-schedule.htm
2021 too https://www.pro-football-reference.c...1-schedule.htm
2022 as well - it's a conspiracy! https://www.pro-football-reference.c...2-schedule.htm

See, now you can plan your moaning and groaning years in advance!

Would you rather open with 3/4 at home or close with 3/4 at home? I'd rather have the 3/4 at home to close it out. And, for the last 3 seasons... KC has had a gift of hosting 3 of their final games. Where's the travesty really?

It's not how you start, it's how you finish yeah? I'd rather finish with 3/4 at home.

I agree and I'm quite happy with our schedule. Just a personal opinion but my belief is that the Bronco's receive a front-loaded home schedule from the NFL in an effort to minimize the chances of a late season snowstorm disrupting an important game.

Playing the Pats and Steelers on the road again? Looks like the NFL is trying to make sure one or both of those teams have Home Field advantage over us.

Playing the Faders 2 of the last 5 games? Carr will probably be hurt by then and they will be out of playoff contention. I hope the refs don't give them a free win again.

Pitt came to us last year but its total bullshit we have to travel again to NE. That is some home cooking bullshit. When you make it to the SB your schedule should reflect it but for Brady it never does. Home tv night games against good teams and they get 3 at home. Thats bullshit. Their opener is also easy.

You can view 2020 as well https://www.pro-football-reference.c...0-schedule.htm
2021 too https://www.pro-football-reference.c...1-schedule.htm
2022 as well - it's a conspiracy! https://www.pro-football-reference.c...2-schedule.htm

See, now you can plan your moaning and groaning years in advance!

Would you rather open with 3/4 at home or close with 3/4 at home? I'd rather have the 3/4 at home to close it out. And, for the last 3 seasons... KC has had a gift of hosting 3 of their final games. Where's the travesty really?

It's not how you start, it's how you finish yeah? I'd rather finish with 3/4 at home.

You and I have had this same discussion for over a decade...
I think it's a distinct advantage to have a front-loaded home schedule. I'd much rather jump out ahead of the pack and let them chase me than have to play catch -up. Anything can happen, but it's ALWAYS better when you are out in front.

KC has an outstanding NOISE advantage at home and more people show up for games when the weather is better than they do in shitty - sub freezing weather at the end of the season. (I don't blame them. I 've done it once. NOT FUN)

Also, it's not only who you play - it's also when you play them. At the beginning of the year, teams are more likely to be at full strength than they are at the end. Advantage again to be playing at full strength at home.

To be fair, the NFL should alternate it's front loaded home schedule annually. That way you would get your wish to one year close the season playing 3 out of 4 and I'd get mine to start at home 3 out of the first 4. The way it is now, Denver is always given the advantage of playing at home to start the season, and that helps them get off to good starts.

IMO, you're spot on with your take on the Patriots schedule.

Look at this Cream Puff schedule for that AFC Champs.

All Playoff roads will go through New England again.

I hear ya.. I think there are too many that just do not understand that schedules (home and away) are predetermined, save for 2 games. Again, anyone can see the home and away through 2022, I believe. Question for them is, does the NFL have some sort of crystal ball that in 2014 they knew how to screw over KC in 2018 with road games?

I've also been to a Denver game at KC on Christmas weekend... the weather is brutal and nearly intolerable. Imagine how the visiting teams feel, then you add in the crowd, etc. It's a nice advantage - one that I would welcome any year over a 3/4 home start to the season.

Sure, you can build up a lead early with a 3/4 start and you can easily lose that cushion late with a 1/4 home finish. In the end, I think it balances out to a degree. And, if your team is really good and they get ahead of that 1/4 home start in the beginning, then it's an easier path to greatness in the final month.

So, as KC fans... if Denver is truly the bottom feeder and KC is that much better than the Raiders and Chargers, go get it and take the early ege.

@ Chargers, @ Steelers, 49ers and @ Broncos --- take 3 of those and you're golden. If KC is as good as many believe, they should really only truly be challenged by PIT, yeah?

I think some put too much weight on the early portions of the schedule.

Are you complaining about the teams played or the cadence of home vs away?

Rasputin 04-20-2018 10:56 AM

I think October 28 & December 13 are doable. It sucks when home games don't fall on payday weekend.

Mahomes is going have his work cut out but I think he will handle it with flying colors. I think we will be in a lot of shootouts.

Just making an observation. NE really only has two tough games on the road. They get 6 easy division games, 3 good teams they play at home and get to start their year at home vs the Texans-who have a QB and their best defensive player in Watt, coming off major injuries.

Looks like 14-2

Automatic Division title and at least one Playoff game at home. They beat KC at Home and squeak by the Steelers for one of two challenging games- they are set up yet again for Home Field throughout the Playoffs- 2 wins and they are in the SB again. :shake:

IMO the the top 3 teams in the AFC will be Pats, Steelers and KC.

KC plays both on the road.
NE 1 on the road 1 at home
Steelers 2 at home.

NE and the Steelers are definitely set up again - with NE having a very easy schedule as always.

pugsnotdrugs19 04-20-2018 11:05 AM

My way early guess just taking a quick glance is 10-6.

Red Dawg 04-20-2018 11:09 AM

Brady hardly ever plays a tough one. They get the good end of tough games playing at home a lot. Unless Brady stops using roids to feel young they will get another bye week at pkayoff time.

For most teams, I would agree. But when players are not in as good of condition because it's early season, that thin air at pile high IS a HUGE advantage.
