Ballbuster Video: 1 store left
Blockbuster down to 1: Bend, OR. Down from 4,500 at its peak. Milennials will never know of this horrid place - a more wretched hive of scum and villainy you'll never see.
Anyone here sad to see their demise? Anyone remember "late fees" returning The Untouchables? |
I saw that this was happening. I spent a lot of money in my local blockbuster a couple of decades ago. The place didn't seem so bad to me.
|
I've never really done the movie rental thing at any volume. Don't know why. I don't have netflix or anything even today.
|
They once had the opportunity to purchase Netflix and passed.
Bet that CEO wishes he had a goddamn time machine |
Used to take my gf in Hs (early 90s). Got slapped with so many late fees
Surprised there was never a mass shooting there |
I guess the Russell Crowe underwear from Gladiator couldn’t save the Alaska blockbusters.
|
Count me in as someone who loved blockbuster. But I grew up in a smaller town. I loved running into people I knew, judging them on their movie choices, and the thrill of not always getting the movie you wanted. Movies and books have become more convenient but I get kind of bummed that so many social experiences are being stripped away from us. Same reason I was sad to see toys r us go away.
|
I always liked Blockbuster because you could go there and rent a Super Nintendo.
I used to do this almost every summer with my cousin when we would visit the States. We never got to play video games in Scotland so Blockbuster was like this magical oasis where I could cheaply and easily acquire video games to play for a joyous, if short time. |

In fact, they had so much pull at one time, a few NC17 flicks would come out with ‘The Blockbuster cut’ so they would rent it in their stores. |

Also the millennials time frame is actually quite big so I am technically one myself. I certainly remember Blockbuster. There was almost something magical about going and finding the video or game you knew for sure would not be there. Plucking that tab off the velcro was a magical moment. |
I had a pretty thriving VHS rental business until they came around.
**** them! |
**** them and their ****ing late fees. Even though they didn't open until 8am, they hit you with a late fee if you didn't get their shit returned by midnight.
|
The last time I rented a game or a movie was probably like 1995

I used to take girlfriends to those rental stores and occasionally squeeze their butts as we walked up and down the isles deciding what movie to rent.
I once took a Mormon girl to the video store and she couldn’t watch anything rated R (we were 19). Seems anything exciting to watch was rated R and everything pg-13 and under sucked. “Nope can’t watch that, oh can’t see that either, fine just pick something already” |

Two slices of Italian Beef or Veggie Special and two new releases was a great way to unwind on a quiet Saturday night. https://s3-media1.fl.yelpcdn.com/bph...bLvbaiGw/o.jpg |
Any biz that lives off late fees or service charges deserves to die
|
Favorite Blockbuster memory: Guy loses his shit at Blockbuster when they tell him that his lost VHS tape is going to cost about $80. The guy went on an epic rant and started picking up tapes and throwing them across the store. One of the two teenage kids behind the counter freaked out, ran out of the store and never looked back.
|
Loved Blockbuster. I still use redbox because, as long as you're not lazy, it's 1/3 of the price of an on-demand rental.

Wow you guys crying over late fees...... like they dont tell you the exact date every time at checkout when it's due back. I bet your the same customers that would complain when a movie wasn't in stock and is more then likely past due to you lazy folks bringing it back.

The could have bought Netflix for around 50 million and Blockbuster laughed Hastings out of the room. On top of that they had evidence that their business model was going down the tubes as early as 1997. Flash forward to 2004 and to compete with Netflix's mail service they were going to have to cut all late fees 200 million, and invest in digital infrastructure to stream which was going to cost another 200 million...and that's when Carl Ichan stepped in and utterly ruined the company. |

A LOT shitty movies with cool covers/spines were rented at Block Buster and Video Zone by me in high school.
|
There was a Blockbuster next door to Little Caesar's in college. We would order a deep dish pizza at Little Caesar's, wait till its ready at Blockbuster and normally buy a bunch of the candy and other junk they had.
|
I remember when women would put on their dating profiles that sometimes they like to stay home and make it a blockbuster night now they say they like to Netflix and chill. When you see milestones like that you realize you’ve been ****ing random strangers on the internet for quite a while.

Always went to Family Video instead.

I worked at a place called The Video Exchange and the owner wanted employees to volunteer for genres i.e. take as many movies home and watch so we could help customers out.I tried to get crime drama but he thought I should do the porn section. :(

Heh I owned the game but didn't have a n64. Anytime I wanted to play I had to go to my friend's house. I don't even know why we had a n64 game honestly because my first ever console was a ps1. Posted via Mobile Device |
Holy shit Goldeneye was awesome!
A lot of good times playing multiplayer on Facility level |

I was at a brewery recently that had a N64 with a bunch of games, including Mario Kart and Goldeneye. Mario Kart was actually still pretty fun but, good Lord, Goldeneye has aged like absolute dogshit. |

We always used to change the settings to golden gun, too. So no matter what weapon, it was always a one-hit kill. I used to put in work with the pp7. |
|
Blockbuster got what was coming.
I do miss rental stores in general though. |

Does this mean that Hollywood Video now has the market cornered?
|
They have a funny Twitter account.

I never went to blockbuster much, but I did go to a mom and pop store that had the same business model, it just had a larger selection.
I got my videos back on time and almost never paid late fees, so that didn't bother me. I did like that I could go to one store and rent any fairly recent Hollywood film and had a huge selection of classics and other type of films. I liked it when Netflix had almost any film that had been made. I'm not looking forward to the day when, in order to be able to see any most film, you will have to have a separate subscription to Netflix, Disney, Amazon, Time Warner, Universal, HBO, etc... Or go back to the bad old days of pirating films. |

I think I lost a movie and just didn't use my account anymore. Everyone had one so it wasn't a huge deal.

We did the same exact thing. Microsoft actually remastered Goldeneye for 360. But it was never released: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/RRRuhviJGMQ" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
