Looking for suggestions: BBQ Sauce
A while back someone on CP had recommended Cowtown's Night of the Living Bar-B-Q Sauce. I wish I remembered who had said it because I'd send you a bottle of bourbon. It was suggested as the best bottled BBQ sauce and I agree. I usually make my own sauces, but this really was fantastic.
I had been getting it on amazon, but they want $16 for 2 bottles and I found it on here, https://www.thekansascitybbqstore.com, for half the price. (And they have free shipping until midnight tonight.) Before I pull the trigger on an order, is there anything else on there that you'd recommend trying? I could use some suggestions for stocking stuffers or general gifts. :thumb: |
The cowtown spicy is really good. For regular bbq sauce, Jack Stacks is my favorite. It makes for a killer sauce base on BBQ pizza.

I'd grab that Firebug Hot Grillin Sauce if you like Night of the Living.

If you like hot sauce, check out Zim's Hot Sauce. It's a KC product and its superb.

Gates Extra Hot > all
night of the living bbq sauce is pretty good though |
Surprised they don't carry Black Market sauces, I was going to suggest them. Small BB-Q joint in Moberly, MO. Their Q is average but that sauce is top grade. I am glad I can get it here in CoMo at the Hy-Vee.

Sometimes Hy-Vee has it.

Always been a fan of Gates (Original and Spicy) along with Jack Stack sauce. I can't stand Bryant's sauce.

Food threads haven't been pulling the best numbers around here lately, but it's very possible this one could reach over 100+ replies! Good work.

UChieffyBugger the type of guy to eat Great Value BBQ sauce.
|
I bought some of the 100% Pain hot sauce too, anyone ever tried it? I've been looking for an easy way to add more heat to my Buffalo Wing sauce, hopefully it'll do the trick.
|
Iron Horse Farm makes a tasty sauce. Sets up nice on wet ribs
|
I live in the San Diego area so finding jack stacks was a challenge. With a little searching Ace hardware has them online $9.59 18oz and other bbq sauces. Just place the order on line and have it delivered to the nearest Ace hardware near you. There will be no shipping charges.
|
100% Pain is hot but not stupidly hot.
For sauces I like American Stockyard Original Pitmaster, Bash Bros Honey Jalapeno and all 3 varieties of Three Little Pigs. These are all pretty sweet sauces. Pain is Good brand heat levels are pretty consistent in regards to ghost/habanero/scorpion raw heat. |
I live in the Jefferson City area & does anyone know if any of these are available locally?

Firebug is my go to. I almost always have a bottle of that in the house. Love their spicy one as well.
|
Did they stop making the Billy Butler sauce?
|
Free shipping deal is pretty nice. I’d been wanting to try Night of the Living for a while and also put some of the Firebug in the order.

The Gates Hot sauce is pretty damn spicy. Almost too much. I like to cut it 50/50 with their regular sauce. Makes it a bit more manageable.
Bryant's original sauce is a love or hate thing. No other sauce is like it. Its tart and had a ton of vinegar and paprika in it. I think its fabulous on brisket, but not on other things. They make a sweet sauce which is more like other traditional KC sauces that is excellent on chicken and turkey. it's one of my favorite sauces, and makes a great dip for chicken strips. |
for spicy... gotta go with big ricks chipotle out of witchita

They still make it?! I talked to the inventor of it a few years back and he said they sold the recipe to someone else and they didn’t make it anymore. Are you saying that I can purchase Firebug Hot here and now in Dec 2019!!?? UPDATE: went to the link in the op and ordered a bunch of firebug hot. Hope it’s the same as the old stuff. Thanks CP! If you're looking for a good sweet sauce, try Blues Hog. It's a sugary and sticky sauce that works great on some things. Too sweet for an everyday sauce. But really good on chicken/pork if that's what you're going for.

When I was young Dad would take me and my brother to old Municipal to take in a ball game. We would stop at the original Brooklyn location. I always was in wonderment at the carboys setting on the window sill inside that old greasy curtain fermenting in the sun I guess. The sill would be covered with dead blowflys with others buzzing between curtain and window. I would order the beef sandwich and the fellow would reach in with gloveless hand grab a big fistfull of meat and slap it on top the wonderbread. Id go back to table and tell Dad that he didnt use the tongs. Dad would give me the look and say if you knew what was happening in the kitchen behind closed doors you would run out the joint. The he would wink and say Arthur lets you see right out in the open he has nothing to hide, shut your trap eat and enjoy. |

Bob Gibson's white sauce is on there.
It's actually pretty easy to make it yourself and it's not for everyone, but it's damn unique and REALLY good on smoked chicken. If y'all are putting in an order anyway, I'd suggest you give it a try. You might hate it, but you might also find 50 different uses for it. Worth spending a few bucks on. |
Maurice's Southern Gold is probably the best store-bought mustard sauce I've ever had. Again, not for everyone but if you like mustard sauce (and don't want to try to make your own), I'd recommend giving that a shot as well. Sadly, they don't appear to have the spicy version on the website, but if you haven't had it before, I'd still give it a shot and maybe doctor it up with a hot sauce of your choosing if you feel inclined.
|
Willingham's Hot Stuff is on there as well - good rub but not as good as their WHAM Cajun seasoning (which I friggen swear by).
Bone Suckin' Sauce is one that I've tried that's also unlike most other stuff I've worked with; as you can imagine I prefer the hot stuff. Hard to explain it but they call themselves "North Carolina Style" I guess. I'd say if you hate Bryants sauce (as many seem to), steer clear of it. It has a bit of a smokey vinegar flavor to it that I sometimes really like. |

I kinda thought 100% pain was lousy, but I don't really like most habanero based stuff. That smoke flavor on Habaneros is just off-putting to me. Gimme ghost pepper 100 times out of 100; flavor is so much better and the balance is as well, IMO. There's some good sweetness in there as opposed to the a sort of fetid smoke. |
THEY HAVE GALLON BOTTLES OF TIGER SAUCE!!!!!
I've mentioned that stuff around here as a mid-smoke glaze that I like to add to ribs to help the bark or as a marinade for sirloin (that I'll then cube and wrap in bacon before grilling). It's outstanding and if I can't find it, I can't find a replacement for it either. I've tried to find replacements for it at times but just haven't been able to. So if I can't find it, I scrap whatever plans I had for it outright. I dunno if anyone needs to buy a gallon of it and the price they have it for on there is about grocery store prices (and Hyvee usually has the small bottles), but if you have $30 to burn and wanna take my word for it, give it a go. |
Thanks everyone for the great suggestions, and please keep them coming in the future. I bookmarked the thread for some orders down the road.
My cart started getting a little full so I got about half of what I wanted and I'll save the rest for later. I ended up grabbing the following: Firebug, Original and Hot Head Country Hot Gates Original Hillsdale Hot Blues Hog Original |
Crap, forgot to throw a bottle of Hillsdale in there.
Went with: Night of the Living (2) Firebug Hot (2) and original (1) Pain is Good Ghost Pepper Barbecue (1) Pain is Good Garlic Style Hot Sauce (1) A bottle of G-Sauce from Go Chicken Go (because my dad loves the shit) And a gallon of Tiger Sauce. Because it will make my wife angry and it's a hell of a lot cheaper to buy that big ass bottle than all the little 4 oz bottles I can find at grocery stores. Preciate the suggestions gents and thanks to the OP for kicking off the ideas. |
Holy crap I'm an idiot. The whole reason I was on there was to get some more Night of the Living and I completely forgot it when going down the rabbit hole.
I just placed a second order for a gallon of Night and I grabbed a small bottle of Tiger to try. |
I'm in a barbecue sauce desert here in Denver right now. All of the sauce I can get at the store is pretty meh.
|
I learned of Tiger Sauce living in Louisiana for a couple of years. Really good on a burger.

Go ahead and crap on me, but I always have a squeeze bottle of KC Masterpiece on hand. Anything different has negligible differences.

I like Rufus Teague's line of sauces. Particularly the original. But my go to sauce is homemade. Tinker with the "parts", but it's basically ketchup, molasses, soy sauce, worchestershire, garlic powder, and pepper. I add a little cayenne if I want it spicy. If you can find sorgum molasses it's even better but it's tougher to come by.

A few of my favorites:
Jack Stack Spicy Rosedale (I have Wyandotte in my blood) Papa Bob’s Bobanero Blind Box (they’ll give you an assortment to try) |
#1 Gates
#2 Blue Hog #3 ... see #1 & #2 |

Having briefly dabbled in that industry, what gets on the shelves is all about money and clout. Once you strip away the different brands, its about 4 companies that make up 90% of a grocery store's products. |

I gotta admit, there is a use for KC Masterpiece. It's terrible on real BBQ, but if you get some chicken strips/nuggets and they forget to give you BBQ sauce, its not bad. I've also made a good BBQ chicken pizza with it.

A few of my comp go-to's:
Blues Hog Tennessee Red Blues Hog Smokey Mountain Eat BBQ IPO |
If you like a thick molasses-y type sauce, blues hog is absolutely incredible. Its become my favorite go to sauce.

Joe's Kansas City.
rubs are good, too. |

Some might scoff because it's stocked in major markets, and their main product is salsa, but Mrs. Renfro's has a darn good Chipotle and Ghost Pepper BBQ.
The Ghost Pepper is darned hot, particularly for a BBQ sauce, but it really livens up beans. I also use it in place of hot sauce or salsa on a burrito. The sweet and smoky really work. Best selling point aside from the sweet, the smoky and the heat, is it's all 'real' ingredients, peppers, tomatoes, molasses, brown sugar, Worcestershire, etc. Not corn syrup shit. https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/00...g?v=1438121520 https://www.mercadomagico.com/images...00258351-0.jpg |
