Best video game based movies

I’m sitting here giving Resident Evil a rewatch (Milla Jovavich FTW) and it’s got me thinking about video game based movies that are good, and those that aren’t. RE I consider rather good. Hitman is entertaining. The Angelina Jolie Tomb Raider was only so so, and I haven’t seen the new one. Max Payne was quite disappointing. And from what little I can remember of it, I feel like the Super Mario Bros movie was bad, especially by today’s standards.

Those are a few to get the discussion started. What are the hits and misses in everyone’s opinions?

lcarus 10-10-2020 06:48 PM

Resident Evil was decent. Not really good as a RE movie but it was ok as just a horror flick. The second RE had the most potential but it wasn't very good. Then the series went downhill quickly.

When the trailers for Silent Hill came out, I was convinced we were finally gonna get a great video game movie. I'm a gigantic Silent Hill fan and I was pretty excited. Unfortunately it was not great. The sequel is pretty awful as well.

Honestly the best video game movie ever is probably the first Mortal Kombat.

I hope they get around to making that Bioshock series. So much damn potential to make a great multi-season show out of that.

This a good point and distinction. By comparison, Max Payne failed as a video game movie and just as a movie in general. So this subject is going to have a lot of qualifiers involved.

Jumanji. :D

In all seriousness, I haven't seen any movies based on real video games that were any good.

For the most part, I haven't played many games based on real movies that were that great either.

I don't think there's great synergy there.

Baby Lee 10-10-2020 07:20 PM

Does Tron count?

Yeah, that’s pretty much the conclusion I’ve come to as well. And that means this topic will either see a decent amount of discussion due the differences or was dead the moment I hit submit. But the films are out there so there they can be considered for what they are, if anyone is so inclined.

If Jumanji does Tron does. Better throw The Matrix in there as well. :)

St. Patty's Fire 10-10-2020 07:27 PM

This is kinda the opposite direction, but Jaccob’s Ladder inspired the Silent Hill series, and it’s a fantastic movie.

Deberg_1990 10-10-2020 07:59 PM

I liked Warcraft.

I actually enjoyed playing that light-bike game as a little kid. [at least for the time I spent in the Venture electronics department while mom/pop shopped].

Bio shock would be amazing (done right of course).

Isn’t an Uncharted movie on the way?

I was only a year old when the movie came out so I missed out that game.

hometeam 10-10-2020 08:48 PM

the newest itteration of Tomb Raider,
and RAMPAGE was not half bad either

Buns 10-10-2020 10:32 PM

Scott Pilgrim is a comic movie that watches like a video game movie.

Buns 10-10-2020 10:32 PM

Double Dragon was the shit.

Also, Sonic was hella fun. IMHO

Bump 10-11-2020 02:40 AM

Mortal Kombat was awesome back then

Silent hill was good

Street Fighter with Jean Claude sucked

Definitely NOT Doom, lol. I will admit it's a guilty pleasure, though, and Rosamund Pike makes it move.

If it still moves after Gone Girl, you might have an imbalance of some sort. ;)

“Tron” the movie came out before the video game.

Can we count movies ABOUT video games, like “Pixels”, “Ready Player One”, “Wreck-It Ralph”, the “Jumanji” sequel with the Rock, etc.,.?

PunkinDrublic 10-11-2020 10:06 PM

Teen Wolf. I loved playing double dribble when I was a kid.

LMAO... come on, man. This scene was one of the best movie depictions of a PFS game ever... Karl Urban? The Rock?!

They made it pretty cool video game based on the movie after it came out as well.

Gravedigger 10-12-2020 03:24 PM

Warcraft wasn't terrible all things considered, and actually stuck close to the source material too.

I do not understand why it did so abysmally in the theaters.

My dad has never played a single second of any of the WoW universe games and enjoyed the movie with me quite a bit.

I never played WoW either. Thought the movie was pretty lousy. The orcs seemed way more powerful than the humans and should have just stomped them. It was a bit confusing, not knowing anything about the game. The CGI was too cartoony.

Sorce 10-15-2020 03:31 PM

I think wreck it ralph is in a grey area, it's based on two fake games with a bunch of references to real games.

No one has mentioned Assassins Creed yet, so I’m guessing I have made the right choice in not going out of my way to see it.

It was a decent movie but not great. Worth watching on streaming if you can.

Stryker 10-15-2020 08:05 PM

Have not read posts but Tomb Raider, Resident Evil and Silent Hill come to mind.

lcarus 10-15-2020 08:14 PM

Anyone else like The Wizard with Fred Savage? It's so corny yet so nostalgic. I remember all the hype when they revealed Super Mario Bros 3 in that movie lol. Everyone in class was talking about it.

Still in my queue. I spend what little free time I have playing video games instead of watching video game-based TV shows. :)

I've been in such a slump with PS4 games lately. None of my friends are ever online anymore which doesn't help matters. When I am on there playing, I'm either just trotting around in RDR Online doing nothing or playing old school shit.

I've been stuck on Dragon Inquisition for going on 2 years. My OCD is a bitch.

I’m no critic. I enjoyed this movie, particularly this scene. It was ****ing awesome.

It’s definitely my favorite. I watched it a few weeks ago and had a blast. The 90s CGI and cheese are absolutely atrocious but still so fun.

I read the Warcraft novelization prior to watching the film so I get them confused, but in either the book or the movie one of the orcs picks up a horse and just hucks it during one of their first encounters with humans.

They’re 7 feet tall, strong enough to launch horses, are just as intelligent as humans and can apparently cast magic spells as well. It made no sense to me that they didn’t just annihilate them.

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time with Jake Gyllenhaal was not terrible, but I would argue most movie adaptations of video games are pretty brutal.

Thumbs up though to the Witcher series on Netflix, really well done.
