RIP Ray Guy
Yes, he was the enemy, but IMO still deserves his thread.
https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/...aiders-dies-72 Sorry if Q. |
As of 2026, he'll be the only punter other than Dustin Colquitt in the Hall of Fame.
|
I thought for sure he would outlive Janikowski
|
Ray Guy learned the coffin corner from Jerrell Wilson.
Two of the greatest of all time. RIP Ray |
Wow, he was a good dude, even for a Raider. He was the best of the best! When I was a kid, I remember he and Jerrell Wilson going at it. Was really cool to watch both of them kick. They could both punt for distance and placement. They could both "Coffin Corner" the ball very well. May he RIP.

Guy was drafted in the first round (23rd overall) of the 1973 NFL Draft. He more than lived up to his billing.
I don't know if we'll ever see a punter get taken in the first round again. |

I am surprised no punters do coffin corner anymore.
If your punting from the 50+/- , seems like a great option rather than kicking into the endzone. |
RIP.

An obvious theory is that punters are better at dropping and killing the ball on the field now. I wonder, though, if better and more consistent turf makes that possible. It's also possible that you have less random variation from putting the ball on the field than you do in an official doing the 3D spatial analysis to figure out if the ball went out on the 3 or the 1 or out the side of the end zone. |
Also the only NFL Hall of Famer from Southern Mississippi not connected to government corruption.
|
I remember Ray Guy hitting the gondola scoreboard hanging from the roof of the Superdome in the 1975 Pro Bowl.
|
RIP Ray Guy, probably the only Raider I have ever had respect for. Never forget the draft choice in the first round that shocked many. He clearly justified that pick.
Had no idea we were the same age. |
GREAT person. Even if he was a Raider. RIP
|
One of my dad's favorite players. He was a maestro of the punt. Also one of the friendliest guys around.
