That was the dislocated kneecap. Reid is talking about the ankle sprain he had against Jacksonville week one.

Wrong.

You’re thinking of the dislocated kneecap.

Andy is referring to when he got his ankle rolled up on against Jacksonville in week 1.

Mahomes injured his ankle in Week 1 of the 2019 season, also against the Jaguars, and didn't miss any time, throwing seven touchdowns and averaging 409 passing yards while leading the Chiefs to victories the next two games, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.
And I believe Cam Erving stepped on him at some point during the Colts game and reaggravated it.

To discount is not to discredit. But you can either take Reid at his word or you can imagine Reid would never disclose the true extent of the real injury.

I’d say it’s better than the alternative where Reid acknowledges that there’s been some swelling over the past day or so and they’re playing it day-by-day.

I would think it's better that it happened on the right ankle because he needs his left foot to set up the throw. The pressure is planted on the left foot when he attempts a throw.

Chieftain 01-23-2023 12:53 PM

One more thing, Mahomes playing within the pocket might be a blessing. He has shown that he can be deadly when throwing from within the pocket.

You drive off the back foot. It will affect him. How much is the question.

They will have to find the best tape job for him. Tight enough to prevent as much separation of the tibia and fibula when planting that foot while also enough flexion to allow him to run.

Very manageable injury for a QB that is not a run first QB. All about pain management and pain tolerance.

If he played any other position it would be doubtful he would be playing.

Not sure about that. He was struggling to get any velocity on the ball after the injury on Saturday. I don’t remember the same velocity issue with his left ankle in 2019. I think that right ankle is pretty important to help him drive the ball around the field with proper NFL level velocity.

TinyEvel 01-23-2023 12:58 PM

I would say to shoot him up with horse cocaine but I have a sneaking suspicion his body is already producing it naturally.

While this is all fine and good, this is the other ankle. You would rather it be the other one but we can likely surmise this is definitely not a grade 3 and probably not a grade 2 high ankle sprain.

Mahomes is so tough.

BleedingRed 01-23-2023 01:14 PM

I'm of the belief (I'm going to be killed for this) that we need to come out with a running game plan.

I think we can run the ball down their throats, and we need to to kill their pass rush.

It’s hard to say. He ran around 500 yards in the Super Bowl on a toe that needed surgery. Like you said, he’s pretty damn tough.

I did find it concerning that he was struggling to put velocity on the ball Saturday. If that’s still a major issue in the next game, it puts him and the team in a tough spot. You cannot expect to beat a great team like Cincy if your QB is lobbing weak high school throws around the field. Begging for trouble there.

Agree 100%. Even if Mahomes can be his normal self we should push the run game as much as possible.

Later in the game if needed then switch to what everyone expects KC to be.

I do love the talking heads like Sharpe who want to talk about how tough the ankle sprains they suffered were and how they know how hard it will be to play.

Like you don’t think medical research has advanced at all in how to treat these things since you played in the 90s?

You aren’t going to be killed because that’s what we should have done last year but Andy was too stubborn to take what Cincy was begging him to.

Players in all sports routinely miss multiple weeks with high ankle sprain. If he was playing any other position other than QB he would be out.

For example CEH has been out what 6 weeks? (not that I care btw)

I believe he injured that ankle again the next week against the Texans. Then the next week he had his kneecap episode in Denver. That actually helped his ankle finally heal.

The Bengals have a really stout pair of DTs against the run. Running against them is very hard.

They're good everywhere.

The Chiefs have a cheat code to all of this, though, and that's Mahomes if he's healthy. But the Bengals shut that down by confusing him in coverage. They also shut him down by having Hendrickson take Orlando Brown to school.

Mahomes is going to solve the scheme, because he's brilliant.

If Orlando Brown can keep Hendrickson off Mahomes, then Mahomes at even 80% is enough to win this game.

I just... have my concerns that OBJ is up for that challenge.

Maybe. Two issues:

1. The Bengals will likely not send a single blitz in the second half. If I watched the last three games I don't think they blitzed Mahomes once in the second half. So McKinnon is more helpful leaking out.

2. The Chiefs never, ever help OBJ.

I don't read into that.

I ask myself, am I cool with Hubbard/Hendrickson against Wylie/Brown.

The Chiefs should help Wylie. They should. But they don't always do that when they should (see: Super Bowl LV). But they won't help Brown.

Bengals blitzed Josh alot yesterday and Reid is expecting the same because of Mahomes injury.

Quote:

Reid said he was expecting the Bengals to put pressure on Mahomes beyond what they normally might because of his limited mobility.

Blitzing Mahomes is the last thing they should do, in my opinion.

Mahomes has elite checkdowns in McKinnon/Kelce/JuJu. He can read everything, see everything, and even if he's hobbled, he's smarter than everyone on the field.

He can't escape pressure as well right now. So, drop everyone, give Hendrickson/Hubbard time to beat the tackles and go get him. Mahomes likely can't beat you with his legs this week.

The 'gals have been able to generate quite a bit of pressure against the Chiefs the last 3 games we've played them with just their 4 man front. I don't see them changing that. If they do, advantage Mahomes, IMO
