Denver Metro & Front Range Forecast for the Next 3 Days

SNUR!!

And lots of it! Between 8” and 48” from the east metro to the foothills. I-25 from Fort Collins to Colorado Springs. Expected to be a heavy wet snow that will break trees and down power lines. Be prepared! I’ll be out working so if you need anything gimme a jingle here.

Living in southeast Aurora, think last I saw it was 8-14 inches….

Can’t see it sticking around long as the temps have warmed up the past few days

It will be a "slush bath" for sure. 37 will be the high on Thursday and Fri will be 43.

It was about this time of year in 2003 that I remember walking right down the middle of Speer in 36" of snow. I had just moved from Costa Rica for a contract banking gig and was living in the Residence Inn at Speer and Zuni. Walked right down the hill on Speer, across the bridge, and right into downtown. Right down the middle of the street in waist-deep snow. Not a single car moving anywhere.

That one completely shut the city down for 2 or 3 days. You know it's a bad one when it shuts Denver completely down for a few days.

I remember that one. That was big.

My general rule of thumb:

Less than 10 inches - business as usual
10 to 19 inches - stuff slows down a little
20 to 29 inches - everything bogs down and stops for a little while
30+ inches - shutdown

Haha. Yeah I remember that storm. They are saying this one is very similar to that one.

tredadda 03-13-2024 08:07 AM

According to the local forecast we are in that weird zone where we could get a ton of snow or very little. Typically we don’t get hit with as much snow/hail where I am in comparison to other parts of the city.

That’s pretty accurate. Our rule of thumb for planting (or at least moving outside) any warm weather plants has been ~ mid May.

A few years ago about this time of year, I was at "Home Depot" in the plant section. It was about 70F. Went to check out and there was a couple in front of me with a flat bed full of flowers. The woman was saying, "I don't see why everyone says winters here are bad!! It's gorgeous out!!"

I asked, "Are you new to Colorado?"

The woman said, "Yes! We just moved from California!!"

I asked if they were planning on planting those flowers into the ground.

"Well, of course silly!!"

I just smiled as the man looked at me with a "Wait, why is he smiling?" look on his face.

Must have been about $400 worth flowers....

Every year we see or hear that from someone, especially on Nextdoor. The ones who have been here long enough know better than to trust these "false Springs". Like clockwork though some will plant something outside during this time of year only to be disappointed when the inevitable snow and cold come back.

It’s people like you! We have squirrels come into our backyard all the time and dig up my wife’s flower bulbs and drive our Corgi crazy as they run along the back fence and into a tree in our neighbor’s yard. She swears someone feeds them as they occasionally drop a peanut or two in our yard. They also shred our sunflowers in late summer. You are part of the enabler crowd.

Usually we get the weather coming off the front range here in Scottsbluff. But there's not even any mention of snow the next few days. So what gives?

Garcia Bronco 03-13-2024 06:05 PM

The mountains are going to get dumped on but it's unclear if outside of the foothills it'll amount to anything other than just under a foot. Then when the sun comes out on Friday and Saturday it'll all be gone.

Because snow doesn't like Nebraska. :)

I think it's the reverse cyclone thing and it's going to kick it over to Kansas more than Nebraska.

It's an upslope system coming roughly from east to west, which is how we get our bigger snows. The system gets trapped against the mountains so it doesn't move and dumps on us continuously.

I don't know what happens afterwards in those systems, if the system eventually reverses and moves east or if it just exhausts itself in Colorado. But it may be the latter.

That's my bet. Maybe a foot, but then gone. Our highs both days will be above freezing, and on Friday it'll be well above freezing.

That’s what I expect as well. We already got the call from my children’s school district saying that school was canceled tomorrow despite it being a day off anyways. Thankfully the front of our house faces south so we will get all the sun when it comes back out and it will melt most of the snow that same day. Less shoveling for me!
