Dr. Red 09-05-2000 08:01 AM

I live in Wichita, for now, and can barely pickup WHB in the mornings. I was listening to Bill Mass talking about Gun and his inconsistencies with the team. He then went on to say that Gun had told his players that he quit on them (retired) for about a 4 hour period, before his wife had to talk him into coming back. I did not hear when/if he said this to his players. Was this before the game, yesterday, when??

Does anyone know anything about this, or is this old news? A little help, please.

Fat Homer 09-05-2000 08:09 AM

I heard that too. If I heard it correctly, Maas reports Gun addressed the team between 9 and 1 yesterday. During that period, he told them he was going to resign as HC. His wife talked him out of it.

DaKCMan AP 09-05-2000 08:12 AM

This is very odd. Quiting at the beginning of the season, now that scares me more then anything.

AustinChief 09-05-2000 08:13 AM

Not good.

redbrian 09-05-2000 08:15 AM

IF that's true, he is of no use to the Chiefs. He is already finished, as is almost any player or coach who almost quits & comes back.

Who would coach this team?

Let me put down my crack pipe and think about this. Parcells would be my red-and-gold wet dream...I'd love to see Dan Williams or DA try and pull their sheeit with The Tuna overseeing practices. I'd bet that Glock's offsides penalties would cease, one way or the other! http://www.ChiefsPlanet.com/ubb/wink.gif

Are you serious??? Isn't that just great. The head coach doesn't even believe that he can get this team to the playoffs. Man, if those guys had just caught all of thier passes, we could have easily won that game. I am starting to feel uneasy about this season.

DaKCMan AP 09-05-2000 08:19 AM

Not to sound too Denise like, but wouldn't this have to kill the moral of the team?

King_Chief_Fan 09-05-2000 08:30 AM

If this is true, this season is toast.

AustinChief 09-05-2000 08:32 AM

Wow...I hadn't heard this.

If I was GM, I'd fire him. This absolutely destroys the morale of the team. It disrupts momentum.

The bad new is I like Gun. I like his hard-nosed attitude.

The good news is, if he goes, the Stooges go with him.

Would this not only substantiate what most of us old time followers stated prior to week one. This being the most confusing preseason we had witnessed. It just goes on and on. As I have stated before, I have followed the Chiefs for over 35 years and never been as bewildered over the direction of this team, as I have this year. This certainly does not qualify me as an expert, as maybe I am losing touch. As to what would happen, should he resign, they would hand the reigns to Shaw, and of course, he would keep the staff, until the end of the year.

AustinChief 09-05-2000 08:38 AM

kcred,

Bingo. This team looks lost...confused...and evidently it's trickling down from the top.

This is the worst way to start the week after being depressed for 2 days about the loss. http://www.ChiefsPlanet.com/ubb/frown.gif

What about this sickening possibility:

One of the stooges becomes the coach!!

AustinChief 09-05-2000 08:43 AM

Even as critical and cynical as I am, I find it hard to believe that CP would make Jimmy or Kurt a head coach.

What is sickening to me, as kcred said in another thread, is that they'd probably make Shaw HC and he'd just keep the stooges.

This team needs to be gutted. Slash and burn. Let the new growth emerge from the ashes.

Although I doubt the accuracy of any report on this radio station, if true, "Houston we have a problem."

Would just rip out any shred of confidence this team may have generated.

htismaqe 09-05-2000 08:45 AM

Cosidering WHB as the source, I'm going to reserve judgement.

I can see Gun telling the team that he feels like resigning, or threatening to resign as a motivational ploy, but I would think that Carl would be the first to know if there was any truth to this.

Luz
still, a scary thought...

Snapper 09-05-2000 08:45 AM

Maybe this is why Willie Shaw is with us. A coaching change is the only way to rid us from Jimmy Raye.

Hoover

shakesthecat 09-05-2000 08:45 AM

Irregardless whether he came back or not, the harm he did is not repairable. What kind of motivation is this. Gee guys I really suck as a head coach, or gee guys you really suck as a team, and I didn't want to be a part of it, or gee guys, you are killing me. Whatever his thoughts were, he should go, and surely someone in that room, should tell us the truth. The only thing that surprises me, is that no natinal media has picked up on it yet. And this is a story, even if he came back.

Dr. Red 09-05-2000 08:46 AM

Jesus, I had really hoped that Maas was BS'ing or that I heard this wrong.

Ladies & Gentlemen, if this is genuinely the case, our team is in serious turmoil. Gun sounds like he is on the brink of a breakdown. If CP does not step in immediately pull Gun out of the lineup, we might witness one of the more brutal season's in our Chiefs history. Gun's inconsistencies and knee-jerking have been curious up until this last blow-up, but now the players are faced with a coach that they can not believe in. How can the players trust and believe in themselves, if the coach wants to throw in the towel after one game.

Carl, please do the right thing for this team and immediately remove Gun from his responsibilities. No President of any corporation would allow his manager to address his workforce like that without losing his job.

wutamess 09-05-2000 08:48 AM

I hate to say it but I think your right. We need to be gutted. If for nothing more than a new team philosophy. It is just not hacking it with the talent that we have. It is really hard to cut down a tree with a tire iron. I am bummed, yet anxious to see if we will get someone new.

Devin Vierth 09-05-2000 08:51 AM

But if the team needs to be gutted and the problem is at the top with CP, what good is it going to do?

redbrian 09-05-2000 08:51 AM

IMO, if the Chiefs have a brutal season, the team will come out of the other end better off than they are now. A top 10 draft pick, and easy schedule, and a clean house.

If we have to promote from inside for the rest of the season, I suggest we promote Stock. Special teams couldn't get any worse w/o him. He would be perfect with all his pissed off faces, ranting, and screaming on the sidelines for the year we will have with a mid season coaching change.

Snapper 09-05-2000 08:58 AM

OK, Now if Gun wants out, we need to thank him for starting the Rookies and young players. From the start I have thought that this year will be a hard one. But Next year is when the Chiefs will be back. Warfield, Dennis, Wesley, Woods, Atkins, Edwards, Clemons, Hicks and Browning are the makeup of the future Defense in Kansas City. Tait, Riley, Shields, Blackshere, Willis, Alford will be the next all star o-line for the Chiefs. Slymo, Gonzales, Parker, Lockett is the start of a good recieving core. I am an Elvis supporter, but if we do have a coah who wants out, lets get a HB that hcan carry the load, and a QB that the home crowd will not boo.

This team can rebuild quick if we need to.

redbrian 09-05-2000 08:58 AM

If Stock is ever even considered for a promotion, that's it for me. I couldn't continue wasting time on BBs and watching games if they aren't even serious about winning.

Stock should be sucking prick for beer money right now DAMMIT!! http://www.ChiefsPlanet.com/ubb/mad.gif

Even if Gun was using this as a motivational ploy, you don't go to the "I was on the verge of quitting on the team before my wife talked me out of it" speech after week 1.

If I were on that team, I would resent any tone of a speech like that after a loss to Indy. Yeah, the offense blew, but the D played hard and only gave up 20 points. Before the Elvis INT, we were strongly in the game. Gun looks like a desperate coach right now.

Lamar and Carl, amputate the leg before the cancer spreads to the rest of the body.

redbrian 09-05-2000 09:12 AM

Chitown,

I agree with everything you said, except for the last sentence. LAMAR ALONE needs to amputate the leg & sever ALL ties to the Schottenheimer era. Carl's success is nothing more than a fond memory at this point.

WarPaint 09-05-2000 09:27 AM

If you read the quote over at WHB, it indicates that Gunther quit in private - to his wife, and then changed his mind a few hours later. He's just as frustrated as we are.

Iron Chef 09-05-2000 09:36 AM

Clint,

Stock would clearly need AA and the 12 step program, if he had to beer earn money in the way you offered.

Much like as special teams coach he would "blow" any opportunity for success. With his track record as special teams coach, he would fumble balls at critical times, hold on any attempt to score, and always choke when needed most.

Dr. Red 09-05-2000 09:42 AM

Chiefnj - I would change your wording a bit. I would substitute "unstable" in for frustrated, and "the rest of the Chiefs mgmt" for we are.

Sentence would read, "He's just as unstable as the rest of the Chiefs mgmt".

AustinChief 09-05-2000 09:53 AM

Perhaps Gun is more than "frustrated"... Maybe he's sick... like manic-depressive, bipolar, schizoid, or whatever...

redbrian 09-05-2000 09:58 AM

Maybe he needs to darken the tint on his glasses.

I actually feel sorry for the guy. He's in WAAAAY over his head right now. IMO he should have remained a D coordinator.

Dr. Red 09-05-2000 10:04 AM

Clint - he can have DC for all I care. It would be an upgrade to move Kurt out of his position anyway.

Fat Homer 09-05-2000 10:09 AM

Chi - that couldn't happen unfortunately. The players would not/could not respect him.

Frazod 09-05-2000 10:14 AM

If true, this is very sad. Makes you wonder how the team will respond to this and what direction it will go for the rest of the season. Anyone ever wonder if Gun has lost control of his coordinators? I feel this is CP's team since Marty left and that CP is in full control. That would frustrate any head coach. I like Gun and I like his vision for this team but is he able to implement it like he wants while Carl is in control. I'm not a CP basher, just making an observation. Makes you wonder.

Dan

redbrian 09-05-2000 10:18 AM

I think Carl and Gun are two peas in a pod. They share the same philosophies. The difference is this: Gunther fears he will lose his job; Carl knows he isn't going to.

------------------
This is my signature!! There are many like it but this one is mine!!

Dr. Red 09-05-2000 10:21 AM

HC - you are right.

It would have to be a complete removal from the system for Gun.

I am beginning to believe that Clint is right. Carl is going to have to face the music on his decision making. There were a lot of capable coaches in the system 2 years ago. The fact that he chose Gun vs. other candidates is something that will follow his resume. Gun is clearly out of his element, which is something the GM/President has to know before he hires a HC.

AustinChief 09-05-2000 10:22 AM

I don't put a lot of stock into WHB, but if there is even some truth mixed into this story it is really, really sad...
The Blessed Virgin Larry 09-05-2000 10:26 AM

I don't know if it's true or not, but the 3 Stooges have that effect on people. I did see something in Gun Sunday that makes me believe the story. Late in the game , when the Chiefs were trying to mount a comeback, Grbac threw that pass to Alexander that he dropped in the endzone and followed with 2 incomplete passes to Lockett in the corner of the endzone in which Lockett never really had a chance. Gun just looked crushed - not mad but crushed. It was like he knows he made a mistake in keeping Raye and knows that the Chiefs are lost, especially on offense. This team has no direction and the RBBC more messed up now then ever before. I don't ever believe Gun anymore - much too much double talk for me. Anyway, he's a great DC, but not a HC. His heart is in the right place but not his head.

redbrian 09-05-2000 10:27 AM

Chitown,

The bad part is that Carl WON'T have to face the music because he's got his boss/friend/lover Lamar Hunt completely fooled, IMO. The job is his as long as he wants it. He'll probably inherit the freaking team when Lamar keels over. At 29 years old, I may not live long enough to see the end of the Peterson Era!! http://www.ChiefsPlanet.com/ubb/frown.gif

Frazod 09-05-2000 10:33 AM

Yeah I believe that their CP and Gun's philosophies are similar. Just makes you wonder what happened to the aggresive downfield passing attack that Gun talked about. I believe that we have the receivers to do that. I even believe that Elvis can get the job done. I would like to see more creative pass patterns that actually get receivers open. The problem is the coordinator. Is he off just doing his own thing? Is that what Gun really wants? Makes you wonder when he opens the game with six straight running plays. If anyone should go, JR should go.

Dan

redbrian 09-05-2000 10:40 AM

Gun is at fault no matter what. If Raye is hurting this team, it's Gun's job to fix it YESTERDAY!! If this pathetic offense is Gun's doing, then Carl should deal with it immediately.

IMO the reason that nothing is getting done is because these idiots all agree that this philosophy "will win games, by God", and that they are going about doing things the right way.

The powers-that-be are all jerking each other off with one hand, and patting each other on the back with the other! http://www.ChiefsPlanet.com/ubb/frown.gif

Gentleman -

WHB will broadcast Gun's press conf. on tape delay at 12:04pm today. Get your lunch now.

Dr. Red 09-05-2000 11:20 AM

According to the Press Conf.

Gun has denied saying he would resign to his team, but would not elaborate what he did say to the team. He does not sound like a man that has lost his confidence, but he did sound very uneasy about answering comments about a supposed resignation.

I dunno what the truth is, but I stick with the original premise, that Gun is overmatched at HC and needs to be removed.

htismaqe 09-05-2000 11:35 AM

I think this is a big lot of nothing.

WHB strikes again.

Luz

micin 09-05-2000 01:00 PM

Shouldn't we wait for all the facts to come in before we say CP should fire him? There was a rumor in the past 2 weeks that Gun was having some personal issues. If he thought that he needed to focus on those and the family, then the thought of resignation would seem personal and not a lack of confidence in the team. This would also go along with his wife telling him to stay with the team and home would be ok. That's just a possible scenario, but you guys are way too quick on the trigger (no pun intended).

Mosbonian 09-05-2000 01:53 PM

I agree that Gun is in over his head and hope that this is just the first movement towards his resigning. Hopefully he will resign before the bye week. Further I hope that any replacement has the nads to insist on the replacement of the three stooges as a condition for accepting the job.

Let me state further that Shaw and his frigging soft coverages are not considered in the event everything comes to pass.

I too am disturbed by this development. But I think a lot of the reactions in this thread come from the same place as whatever Gunther's actual comment/allusion/gaffe/motivational ploy acutally was.

I am making no predictions here [as a fan[atic] this off/pre/first game of - season can best best decribed as going on a blind date hoping to fall in love. . madness, I tell you], but I do want to know. If the Chiefs are able to string together 2, 3, 4 wins in the upcoming month, who will reconsider his motivational ability? Who will reconsider whether this was a weak or a cunning episode?

My point is, this team is set to either gel or implode. What has been so maddening as a fan[atic], is it seems they have been set to gel or implode for so long now - without doing either. The talent IS there. That
