no, did submit an offer but were informed one of the members would be out of town. Perhaps next year, but I think our Sunday headliner Head for the Hills is a nice get for us. Check them out when you get a chance.

every year? This is year two of our event. But my promise is if we continue to see the support we are seeing, we may end up with one of the premiere bluegrass (or acoustic music or whatever the hell you want to call it) events in the Midwest.

Kentucky’s just going to have to deal with it. St. Joseph will be the bluegrass capital of the world this weekend.

Not only will Ironweed Bluegrass perform at the Missouri Theater on Saturday, but Bluegrass Battles Hunger will play host to some of the nation’s greatest bluegrass acts at Felix Street Square on Sept. 24 and 25.

A total of 11 acts will perform at Bluegrass Battles Hunger, a free two-day event to which patrons are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food or cash donation to support the Second Harvest Community Food Bank. Of the acts, three have gained national attention and lots of fans along the way.

Head for the Hills will be the last band to take the stage at the festival, but the Colorado quartet is probably the first name on the Bluegrass Battles Hunger roster that music fans would recognize. After all, the band has shared the stage with the likes of The Avett Brothers, The Flaming Lips, My Morning Jacket, Yonder Mountain String Band, Ween, Bruce Hornsby, Emmylou Harris, Dr. Dog and Nickel Creek.

A favorite at many festivals like Wakarusa and Telluride, Head for the Hills also was chosen as a “SXSW Critics Picks-Must See” at the 2011 SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas, earlier this year. “That was an incredible showcase for our band,” says Adam Kinghorn, guitarist for Head for the Hills. “People really responded to our music.”

Head for the Hills doesn’t play your daddy’s bluegrass. Rooted in progressive acoustic music, the band delves into contemporary and funk grooves, with occasional forays in the gypsy realm. In fact, the quartet doesn’t have a banjo player — something that some traditionalists would consider as a bluegrass sin. However, Kinghorn argues that the absence of the banjo allows the group’s music to breathe a little bit.

“I think that what does make our band unique is that we don’t have that constant twang going on,” he says.

Kinghorn says guest banjo players step in with the group occasionally, but if Head for the Hills were to add an instrumentalist, it would be a Dobro player. Kinghorn says the instrument has more of a “slidy twang” than the banjo. Fingerpicking isn’t part of the group’s M.O. Neither are long jams, Kinghorn says.

“If there’s something I can’t stand these days, it’s needling — kind of doing the same thing over and over,” Kinghorn says. “Our compositions are a little more jazz-oriented, so there’s not a lot of jamming.”

Those are the kind of things that have set Head for the Hills apart from the rest of the genre. Of course, a critically-acclaimed album doesn’t hurt.

Head for the Hills’ self-titled 2010 sophomore release boasts heavyweights like longtime bluegrass aficionado Drew Emmitt (of Leftover Salmon) as producer, as well as studio engineer Gus Skinas, who digitally remastered Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon.” In addition, Vance Powell — who owns a Grammy for his work on the Raconteurs’ wildly successful “Consolers of the Lonely” — mixed the record.

Right now, the band is gathering material for a live album, but Kinghorn says the group would like to work with a well-known alternative rock producer for the next studio record because, frankly, the members have bigger plans. Head for the Hills wants to make a mainstream splash with an eclectic style of bluegrass.

“That’s kind of where our heads at,” Kinghorn says. “We’ll keep the essence of what makes it bluegrass and use that as the vehicle we get to other genres with.”

Those wanting to see an experienced bluegrass veteran might want to check out 20-year-old Sierra Hull on Saturday.

Nope. That wasn’t a typo. Sierra Hull is a 20-year-old bluegrass veteran. She has been playing the mandolin since the age of 8. By the time she was 10, she released the album “Angel Mountain.” A year later, she was befriended and mentored by country superstar Alison Krauss. Krauss has since produced Hull’s albums “Secrets” (2008) and “Daybreak” (2011), which both reached the Top 5 on Billboard’s U.S. Bluegrass chart.

As Hull grew up, she leaned more toward country compositions but began attacking her solos with newfound spontaneity — as if she were playing with a point to prove. Her lyrics also became more open, honest and powerful.

Today, she is one of the most sought-after names in bluegrass. She has already performed in renowned venues like Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Next week, she’ll perform at the world-famous Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. So it’s a pretty big deal that Hull will be doing a free show in St. Joseph.

“Sierra Hull was an incredibly good ‘get’ for us this year,” says Bluegrass Battles Hunger founder and organizer Chad Higdon.

Two pretty good acts will be following Hull on Saturday.

The Chapmans are one of the finest Missouri Ozark bluegrass bands out there. The family band relocated from Colorado to the Ozarks in the late ’90s and jumped into the national spotlight when they won the International Bluegrass Band Championship held by the Society For the Preservation of Bluegrass Music in America (SPBGMA). Since then, The Chapmans have recorded several critically acclaimed albums and has won or been nominated for several SPBGMA and International Bluegrass Music Association Awards.

“The Chapmans are very talented, and they have a great following in Missouri,” Higdon says.

Lawrence busker Tyler Gregory will follow The Chapmans. The guitarist frequents many Kansas City and Lawrence venues like the Record Bar and the Replay Lounge, but he has also become a favorite addition to festivals across the country. This year, he performed at the Weston Bluegrass Festival as well as the Walnut Valley Festival in Winchester, Kan.

Local musicians Jason Riley, Sean Cleary and Tracy Huffman also will get a chance to strut their stuff at Bluegrass Battles Hunger.

Bluegrass Battles Hunger to Host Third Annual Concert Event in Support of Second Harvest Community Food Bank

Vintage Home Health is excited to announce the third annual Bluegrass Battles Hunger 2-day concert event to support the Second Harvest Community Food Bank. The concert will be held at Coleman Hawkins Park at Felix Street Square in downtown St. Joseph on Friday, September 21 and Saturday, September 22, 2012.

The festival is free and open to the public. Patrons are encouraged to bring non-perishable food and cash donations to support the Second Harvest Community Food Bank. The event is being sponsored by several business organizations in the St. Joseph community, including the event’s Presenting Sponsor, Vintage Home Health.

On Friday, Mountain Sprout, Whiskey for the Lady and Tyler Gregory will take the stage. On Saturday, The HillBenders, The Souveneers, Famous Seamus and the Travelbongs, Under The Big Oak Tree, Windy Ridge Revue, Sean Cleary & Tracy Huffman, and Chambers Music will perform.

The HillBenders have been winning over audiences from coast to coast with their unique style, original compositions and relentless drive. These buzz-worthy bluegrass whiz-kids are quickly rising above many of their peers and gaining international recognition for their aggressive combination of contemporary influences with traditional inspiration and instrumentation, as well as their infectiously energetic stage performances.

Claiming the championship title at the 2009 Telluride Bluegrass Band Competition helped put The HillBenders on the map, and their recent victory at the 2010 National Single Microphone Championships prove that they continue to be a force to be reckoned with. The HillBenders have become a must-see act with appearances at some of the country’s premiere music events such as the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Fan Fest, Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival, Walnut Valley Festival, Mullberry Mountain Harvest Festival, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Silver Dollar City’s Bluegrass and Bar-B-Q festival and many more.

Formed in the spring of 2008, the band’s members hail from distant corners of the U.S. but now base themselves in Springfield, Missouri. However, he has also become a favorite addition to music festivals across the country as his rich sound takes cues from World War II-era blues bellowers like Leadbelly and Son House.

Gregory drew national media attention earlier this year when one of his everyday street performances turned into an extraordinary moment. The guitarist was belting out a tune when he captured the attention of a young blind boy with autism, who slowly approached Gregory and put his hand on his guitar. Slowly, the boy began bobbing his head as Gregory continued with the song, seemingly unfazed by his strong attraction to the beat. The boy’s parents captured the footage and uploaded it to Youtube. The touching video, called “Jacob and the Guitar Man,” has now been viewed by more than 500,000 people.

Local quintet Whiskey for the Lady may play traditional and modern bluegrass, but its members don’t hide from their love of various musical styles. Violinist Mallory Edson brings her classical training to the group, while she and her brother Robbie Edson, who plays guitar, grew up on folk music. Phil Craven (mandolin), Ricky Deal (banjo) and Brad Price (bass) come from a heavier background, which comes out as the group plays very unique Tool and Nine Inch Nails covers. But it’s in their originals — like the rough-edged, foot-stomping “Beautiful Things,” “Courteous Lies” and “Wrong Road” — that the variety of influences is most apparent. Songwriting is a collective effort, and the members’ varied perspectives take their music to unexpected places.

St. Joseph four-piece Under the Big Oak Tree features wonderful vocalist Kristin Hamilton; fiddler Simon Fink, who teaches music composition at the collegiate level; bassist Doug “Sluggo” Ward, a veteran of the St. Joseph music scene; and banjo player Rocky Cathcart, a doctor by day. From the band’s spirited originals to bluegrass covers of Gillian Welch and The Avett Brothers, Under the Big Oak Tree’s sets are marked by a homey, front porch vibe that brings back memories of singing around the campfire.

These are just some of the bands performing at what is sure to be a spectacular event. Bluegrass Battles Hunger is free to attend and patrons are encouraged to bring a food or cash donation to support the Second Harvest Community Food Bank. The Second Harvest Community Food Bank supports hunger relief agencies in Northwest Missouri and Northeast Kansas. Second Harvest Community Food Bank, a member of Feeding America, is the area’s link between an abundant food supply and people in need. Last year’s event was successful in raising over $1,600 and 1,500 pounds of food in support of the food bank’s efforts.

Mountain Sprout played at the crossroads earlier this year and it seemed to have a decent turnout.

I'm not a bluegrass follower but Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers were in town during June. I bought tickets for the family mostly because I always wanted to see Martin live.

Wow. The music was awesome. My foot was tapping the entire time. If you're looking for something to do a Bluegrass event will not disappoint.

I went to night 1 of the Fayetteville Roots Festival tonight. Holy shit. This lineup just keeps getting better.

The fun thing is all the bands are staying at a retreat center here, and they stay up late night just hanging out and playing together (some of our good friends put this whole thing together). Well... that retreat center is also the neighborhood pool we belong to. I told my wife, "We're going to the pool tomorrow because I bet the bands will be there." Tonight, while onstage, one of the guys from The Steel Wheels said, "We're really loving our digs. I was swimming laps at the pool today." Hah! So I may be chilling by the pool with John Prine tomorrow.
