I still cannot get over this. I can't think of a single time in modern football I've ever seen any team curl up into a ball and announce to the world what a bunch of gutless p*ssies they are...

Did even Herm ever pull this?

banyon 10-07-2012 03:13 PM

"There's a chance for something to go wrong on every play"

Maybe we should just punt on first down then and not take chances.

Lex Luthor 10-07-2012 03:13 PM

I was at a high school football game earlier this year when the local team (Shawnee Mission West) did the same damn thing. They were actually at about their own 30 with 5 seconds left in the first half, and the score was tied.

When they sent the punt team out, I thought "WTF, a punt can be returned for a touchdown! What a stupid call!".

The punt was returned for a touchdown. That was the stupidest call in a football game I've ever seen.

Until today.

Messier 10-07-2012 03:13 PM

I thought the same thing when we ran the ball three times in Saints territory at the end of the regulation to play for the tie. Who doesn't play for the win there? The Chiefs don't.

-King- 10-07-2012 03:13 PM

Romeo Crennel.

Who calls a timeout when the opponent has a first down with 2:43 left on the clock?

That call blew my mind.

We had two timeouts left. That means you wait until they run a play before calling your first timeout so that after the 3rd down play, you still have the 2 minute warning to stop the clock.

Calling a timeout before the first down play means that the 3rd down play will likely come after the 2 minute warning.

Why do so many coaches fail at clock management?

mlyonsd 10-07-2012 03:13 PM

Kickers are tender and emotional. Good coaching protects them.

Hermi-O said it was "too risky".

Too risky to take a chance on a 60 yard FG in perfect weather? Worried that Ed Reed was going to return it for a TD? Why? Hermi-O wasn't trying to win anyway.

At the very worst they could have tried a hail mary that would have taken 8-10 seconds and virtually run out the clock. It would have been comical to see if Cassel could throw it through the uprights from that far out.

CLEVELAND PART II, only WORSE because of Pioli and Cassel.

Smed1065 10-07-2012 05:35 PM

You might win, take no chances.

ThaVirus 10-07-2012 05:38 PM

Although gutless, I'd argue it was the right call.

At that point we were in a dogfight. If we kicked the field goal, we likely would have missed and given them the ball in our territory with 10 seconds and a timeout. One 12-15 yard pass gives them a chance to add 3 quick points before calling it a half.

If we throw it... well, that's not really an option apparently.

I will agree that you take that chance with good QB though.

Romeo coaches like Cassel plays -- Frightened like a little girl.

I would wager almost every other coach in the NFL would have at least tried another pass to get into field goal range. Who knows, 3 more points might have come in handy later... [/sarcasm]

RINGLEADER 10-07-2012 05:46 PM

The fact that Romeo thinks that it's "too risky" + Daboll having no confidence in Cassel + Cassel being more secure at the position then Excalibur was in that rock = Chiefs have ZERO chance to do anything this season.

Welcome to being a Chiefs fan. Back when Vermeil was coach it was "We just need to have a couple losing years to get high draft picks and rebuild," and here we are with a half decade of complete failure we can't get out from. Then Herm was going to fix the defense, then Haley couldn't be any worse than Herm, then Palko couldn't be any worse than Cassel, now Quinn can't be any worse than Cassel. Next it will be (insert GM) can't be any worse than Pioli, so we'll hire DeCosta and he'll turn this into mutant Ravens west.

KevB 10-07-2012 07:31 PM

It was a simple decision. You try to run a quick out to get 8 yards. You complete it, you have the first down and you're now in FG range. If it's covered, throw it away. Even if you turn it over on downs, there's only time left for one play, and that's a hail mary. It was a terrible decision and just further solidifies that we are out-gunned at the HC position every week.

No upside whatsoever. You just punt it away and concede the fact that you won't score anymore points; but neither will they.

You'd have kicked a 60 yard field goal with Ryan Succop? We hold our breaths when the guy boots a 38 yarder. A try from that far has a HUGE possibility of being block and returned for a TD or just flat out missing, putting them in great position to get off a field goal after a quick pass.

The only other option was a quick out route. Then again, the Ravens are an extremely experienced defense and definitely would have known that. They'd have been looking to jump any out route; combine that with Cassel's WR death staredown and molasses-dipped release and you're looking at a possible pick 6.

Hammock Parties 10-07-2012 07:32 PM

The man does not have an aggressive bone in his body.

I doubt he's seen his own dick in 10 years.

ThaVirus 10-07-2012 07:33 PM

Also, by taking a chance with the pass and ol' Matty Cass, you run the risk of him freezing up and taking a sack/sack strip combo. He's done much worse. Shit, the guy fumble the ball at the damn goal line today..

Hammock Parties 10-07-2012 07:37 PM

I was taking pleasure in calling him MedioCrennel but it's apparent he's not even mediocre now.

This entire organization's leadership is a dumpster fire from the front office to the sidelines to the field.

ThaVirus 10-07-2012 07:42 PM

I really, really, really wish I could get the inside scoop on this Cassel situation.

Was he the reason Weis was ran out of town or Haley?

Was Haley handcuffed to Cassel and fought the power? Could that have been why he was shitcanned midseason?

Does Romeo honestly ****ing believe that Cassel gives us the best chance to win? Is he just a subservient bitch that will do whatever Pioli says? Is that why he got the job over everyone else?

WHAT IN BALLS' NAME IS GOING ON HERE?

I think you know the answer. First 2 is yes, leaning towards a 3 for 3. Same as Quinn. This is year 4.

R8RFAN 10-07-2012 07:46 PM

I guarantee you with the score tied had the Chiefs failed on 4th down with 12 seconds left that even if the Ravens would have got the ball back they would have taken a knee and took it to the locker room.

Strange call there.

It's not popular with fans, but it might be considered the right call for a team that had something to lose.

This team had nothing to lose. They haven't led a game for a single second. They just had played a half of football that it was highly unlikely they would sustain or improve upon in the second half. If there was ever a right time and a right team to take a risk, it was there.
