Buffalo Bills Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly's cancer is spreading and his condition has become more serious, according to reports from upstate New York news stations.

Kelly and his family were in New York City on Monday seeking advice from a specialist about how they should proceed in managing his oral cancer.

After meeting with a specialist, he is reportedly expected to undergo surgery at Manhattan's Lenox Hill Hospital on Thursday.

Kelly's wife, Jill, posted a photo on Instagram with a caption confirming that her husband was tentatively scheduled for surgery that day.

He announced 10 days ago that the cancer had recently returned even after he had much of his jaw removed last summer.

According to posts from Jill and his daughter, Erin, Kelly has been in and out of hospitals in that timespan.

Dennis DiPaolo, a man who identifies himself as close friend of the family, says Kelly is in a lot of pain, as well as "weak" and "in bad shape," but still in good spirits.

“He’s like come on, don’t hang your heads. Like you walk in the room and he’s in a huddle and still commanding everyone and even if he’s trying to rest his eyes, he knows you’re there and he goes, ‘Thanks for coming you guys.’ He’s just a remarkable individual,” DiPaolo said.

He's endured far more tragedy than any man should. Best wishes, Jim.

I'll always root for Jim Kelly. Great football player and great man.

Maybe this is the Super Bowl he can win?

Best wishes Jim Kelly. Under rated as a quarterback.

One of the greats. It was a joy to watch him play growing up. I hope he beats this.

Very sad, Kelly is one of the easier guys to root for

Having lost a parent to cancer I cant imagine what his daughter is going through. Hearing that the cancer has returned is about the worse feeling a family can go through. Best of luck to Jim and his family.

55% 5 year for advanced local disease, but if he has lymph mets (which I am assuming so because they said "spreading"), that is a very bad prognostic indicator.

So, My GF is an oncology nurse, and I have learned a lot about cancer over the last year or so.
I was previously under the impression, I guess from all of the Lance Armstrong types of stories on television, and not having any first hand experience with the beast, that most people beat cancer
Unfortunately, this is very far from the truth, and the survival rate, depending on what type you have, of course, is very, very low.
My prayers go to any of you who Have had this disease hit close to home.

So I've been told.
Once you hear the dreaded "metastasized" the outlook is very bleak.
