Giants cut Ahmad Bradshaw and Chris Canty

I like both of these guys. I'd love to see Bradshaw come here as Charles' backup. Canty could play one-gap 3-4 end.

The New York Giants have parted ways with running back Ahmad Bradshaw and defensive end Chris Canty.

Bradshaw was released by the Giants on Wednesday, marking the probable end of a six-year relationship with the former seventh-round pick. The Giants also released Canty, who recorded 20 tackles and three sacks in 2012 as the Giants failed to make the playoffs one season after winning the franchise's fourth Super Bowl title.

The moves were earlier reported by NFL.com's Ian Rapoport and Albert Breer.

Bradshaw wasn't surprised to learn he was leaving New York.

"I saw it coming because of the money," Bradshaw told ESPN's Josina Anderson. "Everything is about money, I guess, so yes I was expecting it. I'm not discouraged at all. I'm just looking towards getting healthy and working with somebody else. That is all I can do."

Bradshaw speculated back in December that he could be a salary-cap casualty given the presence of David Wilson and Andre Brown on the roster. According to Mike Garafolo of USA Today, the Giants save $2.75 million on the cap by cutting ties with Bradshaw, who had two years remaining on his contract.

The decision likely goes beyond the financial. Bradshaw was seen in New Orleans on a motorized scooter wearing a walking boot after undergoing another procedure on his right foot two weeks ago. Bradshaw has had the right foot operated on at least three times, to go with procedures on his left foot and both ankles.

Despite that, Bradshaw was a productive player for the Giants who will be forever remembered for his accidental game-winning touchdown run against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI. In 14 games last season, Bradshaw finished with 1,015 yards and six touchdowns on 221 rushes, averaging 4.6 yards per carry.

Bradshaw will find work someplace else. For now, he's the latest example of NFL teams saving money at running back so they can spend elsewhere.

Please no...A 27-year old walking injury that will command a decent paycheck and is going to take away carries from Charles? RBs are so easy to replace. Why bring in a guy who is on the way down when the roster already has some young, cheap talent at the position?

Hootie 02-06-2013 03:26 PM

Bradshaw is washed up.

RB's are a dime a dozen in the draft.

Why waste money on a brokedick?

I think our RBs suck.

No one is gonna pay Bradshaw much, and probably not to be a starter. He'd be a perfect fit here as a #2 if his foot is OK.

a 26-year old RB who averaged 4.6 YPC is washed up?

His foot has never been "OK".

Ahmad Bradshaw is in a walking boot after recently undergoing "minor" right foot surgery and will be sidelined for 10 weeks.

Despite the "minor" scope, yet another foot surgery is yet another red flag on Bradshaw's chronically injured feet. The latest procedure replaced a screw in his right foot. Bradshaw has now undergone three separate surgeries on his right foot, in addition to a left foot operation and surgeries on both ankles. The buildup of all the surgeries is an obvious concern for the 27-year-old's outlook. We expect 2012 first-round pick David Wilson to receive every opportunity to replace Bradshaw as the Giants' feature back in 2013 training camp. After the season, Bradshaw said he wasn't even convinced he'd be back in New York at his scheduled $3.75 million salary.

How good was Canty last year? Is he starter quality?

It may be time to stop looking for an expensive backup to Charles.

Reid doesn't utilize power backs, really. He kinda used Buckhalter, but not terribly well. He's going to continue to look for fast, shifty, HR style RBs.

His RB usage is perfect for Charles - 250ish carries and a bunch more passes out of the backfield. Why do we need Bradshaw to pick up the scraps there? Bradshaw would've been great if we were trying to run last season's offense, but I just don't think there's a need for a top tier backup to Charles in this system.

I like Bradshaw a ton - yeah, he gets dinged but he plays through a lot and is a damn tough runner - he's just not right for this team, IMO.

As for Canty - yeah, I'm on board there.

Canty, who recorded 20 tackles and three sacks in 2012.

That was as a 4-3 DT though. I'd give him a shot at 3-4 DE.

HolyHat 02-06-2013 03:31 PM

No thanks on Bradshaw. Can't stay healthy, terrible attitude, and too expensive. He's only 26 but he's been put through the spin cycle a bit too much. You can find RBs in late rounds to fill holes. Not to mention I like Draughn and Gray as backups

mcaj22 02-06-2013 03:31 PM

no to both of these turds

suds79 02-06-2013 03:32 PM

I hate pretty much all FA RBs.

Don't do it.

Just draft your RBs in the 4th or later and give them the ball.

See a Robert Turbin for Seattle this year. 4th round rookie. Averaged 4.4 YPC.

Canty was pretty good in Dallas 3-4.

I think he's better than Dorsey or Jackson by far.

milkman 02-06-2013 03:33 PM

I'd take Canty to cheap contract, and pass on Bradshaw.
Like Hootie said, dime a dozen.
