'Godzillatron' Will Spotlight National Football Champs

Everything, it seems, really is bigger in Texas.

The University of Texas at Austin is set to unveil an HDTV setup that makes the 50-inchers at Circuit City seem downright Lilliputian.

Billed as largest high-definition display in the world, the 7,370-square-foot screen will give fans of the current national champions a clear perspective of all the field action at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. Players call it "Godzillatron."

"The guys are talking about trying to hook up an XBox to play games," Texas defensive end Tim Crowder told the Associated Press.

The scoreboard is 55 feet tall and 134 feet long. The $8 million display was built by South Dakota-based Daktronics. The school had to install 40 five-ton air conditioners to keep the board cool. The school also added message board displays to the east and west stands.

The scoreboard will debut Sept. 2, when Texas plays North Texas.

I'd like to see the electric bill on that thing.

The Atlanta Braves have an HDTV in center field that seems to be bigger than the infield.

It cost them $15,000,000, which is the same amount Ted Turner bought them for way back when.

I guess that means we have to get a bigger one now and with HDTV

Significant renovations to the stadium were put into place for the 2005 season. Among the improvements was installation of a $10 million video display, which was at the time listed by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's largest high definition video board. Since then, other stadiums including Dolphins Stadium in Miami, Florida, Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, Texas, and a horse track in Toyko have installed larger boards.

I'm going to build one that's the same size as the monolith that they found near Jupiter in the movie 2010.

First order of business will be to destroy Jupiter and then to play video games on it.

The Royals are supposedly thinking of using the renovation money to turn the big crown in center field into a giant HD video board. I don't know the dimensions of it, but I imagine it would be fairly large.
