Waiter's aren't usually praised for refusing to serve customers, but one waiter is facing a tidal wave of support and praise after he did just that.

On Jan. 16, Michael Garcia, a waiter at Laurenzo's, a steakhouse in Houston, refused to serve a customer who was making comments about a 5-year-old boy named Milo with Down syndrome sitting nearby, Fox News reported. Fox said the customer got up and moved his family farther away from Milo.

The customer also reportedly said, "Special needs children need to be special somewhere else."

That's when Garcia stepped in and told the man, "Sir, I won't be able to serve you."

The man and his family left the restaurant, but the incident has since gone viral, inspiring an outpouring of praise for Garcia.

Laurenzo's Facebook page has seen a slew of posts thanking Garcia.

"Thank you Mr. Garcia, I have a 17 year old son with Down syndrome and I love to hear about people like yourself standing up for people with disabilities," Facebook user Rick Parker posted.

Tisha Baker wrote, "Thank you so much for speaking up when most just turn away."

The praise has not been limited to Texans.

"BRAVO Michael! BRAVO! STANDING OVATION from Massachusetts!" Rick Stoddard posted.

Milo's mother, Kim Castillo, posted online the night of the incident that "Tonight was a first." She wrote that she didn't think much of the family asking to be moved away from her and her son, but was impressed by Garcia's response.

"The waiter promptly told them he was offended by their comment and refused to serve them. Yay for people like Michael," she wrote.
I have always had a special place in my heart for special needs kids. Good on that guy for putting his job at risk in order to stick up for Milo. I wish there were more people like him in the world... I would hate people, in general, much less.

It takes a special kinda asshole to make a comment about a downs syndrome child.

In58men 01-23-2013 08:12 PM

I'd punch that snobby ass family right in their faces. Underage or not, ****'em.

BigMeatballDave 01-23-2013 08:16 PM

Wtf is wrong with people?

'Hamas' Jenkins 01-23-2013 08:18 PM

He should have shot the mother****er in the chest with a harpoon gun.

The Franchise 01-23-2013 08:19 PM

Dude should have been jumped by the entire restaurant.

ChiefRocka 01-23-2013 08:22 PM

I would've served him. Raiduhs

I can't imagine hearing another human being utter those words. What a disgrace to our society.

MeatRock 01-23-2013 08:38 PM

I think his food might have been TAINTed if i was the server.

LoneWolf 01-23-2013 08:39 PM

Did anyone else read the thread title and wonder why the waiter refused to serve tequila in defense of a child with Down's syndrome?

I also feel bad for the customer who made those comments, and the customer's family as well. It's obvious that they are not doing well and that something inside them has died. That father is leading his family into a life of pain and destruction. Pray for people like that because they need it.

Bump 01-23-2013 09:11 PM

good for that waiter man! **** anybody who makes fun of something like down syndrome.

SAUTO 01-23-2013 09:20 PM

I don't know what I would do if that happened to me.

I doubt it would be good

He should've gone all Michael Corleone on their Sollozzo and McCluskey asses.

tooge 01-23-2013 09:27 PM

This is bs. I don't care if he has downs syndrome or not. Kid brings a couple a limes and some salt and I'd serve up some Patron with him.

-King- 01-23-2013 09:27 PM

Nobody would have blamed him if he punched the guy. He might have even gotten a raise. All the same... kudos to the man. Even little things like this mean a lot.

Demonpenz 01-23-2013 09:31 PM

I guess life goes on.

Oh yeah. As the kid's mother stated, it means a lot to the parents to know people are in their corner in what will be a cruel world for her kid at times.

half of this stuff that "went viral" smells like BS to me. would be good publicity for the restaurant wouldn't it...

no shit

stevieray 01-23-2013 10:18 PM

it would have been cool if the dad told had milo to go over to the "man", smile, say hi and introduce himself...then the waiter could've "accidentally" tripped and spilled water all over you know who.

Braincase 01-23-2013 10:31 PM

Would you like some Frumunda cheese with your pasta?

Jiu Jitsu Jon 01-24-2013 12:25 AM

I would've armbarred the guy right then and there. In the middle of the restaurant.

Pitt Gorilla 01-24-2013 12:35 AM

Eh, we had an entire thread on here where people claimed that children shouldn't be in restaurants, period. It doesn't surprise me that someone was upset that a child was too close to them in a restaurant. It's stupid, but people are stupid.

Jiu Jitsu Jon 01-24-2013 12:42 AM

I have a kid that's almost two, but if he were having a meltdown I would just take him elsewhere.

Hammock Parties 01-24-2013 12:43 AM

I wouldn't serve patron to a kid with downs either.

Special needs kids need tequila too. You're just wrong. WRONG.
