Cell phone = Junk. Need help picking a new one.

My phone is poop, so I need a new one. I haven't followed what phones are worth a shit, so I need your guys' help on which ones are good/bad.

Since I am in BFE, I am stuck with Alltel. Here is a LINK to phones I have available to me.

I have had good luck with Motorola, but I refuse to buy a RAZR. I really don't like them.

I am also thinking of going to a Blackberry or other smart phone, but am not sure I want to pay an additional $20 for the data service. I have used a PDA pretty extensively in the past, but now that I'm in an 8-5 job, it is more of a pain to tote around. Any insight on what kind of usage would be required to make them worth the money would be appreciated. I have no idea what type of blackberry is good.

Also, since Alltel got bought out by Verizon, is there anything I should worry about there?

Thanks in advance.

I went without a cell forever, and was perfectly happy. Recently picked up a Tracfon for 20 bucks that'll suit my needs perfectly. I am a bit of a gadget geek, but cell phones aren't really my thing.

As a bonus, my little ghetto phone got a signal down in the hills at Lake of the Ozarks, when my step-dad's fancy phone wouldn't. :D

My cell phone is my only phone. I'd like to get a decent one.

If you happen to change your mind about the RAZR... let me know. I have one for sale right now. It was last on Alltel service, so that would work for you. I'll include the box, charger, and Chiefs colored protective shell. Used for about a year. One small scratch on the front down near the Motorola symbol.

$70.00

I was going to get a Sony Ericsson w580i. But then I got an MP3 player instead.

Love my Razr - got a clear hard shell plastic cover and some spare covers.... at http://www.bargaincell.com/
along with car charger.

RAZRs are complete shit. The hinge on the flip-up screen will eventually go bad; it locks a bit on the cheap components and requires a bit of torque to open. Of course as soon as you do that it will pinch/fray and or cut the cables to that piece of the phone. If you made the mistake of saving your contacts to phone (so you can apply individualized images & ringers), you're screwed. Screwed, of course, unless you were smart enough to back them up first; not a bad move considering the fact that you just bought a POS Motorola anything.

My hate isn't nearly that deep, but OK. What do you suggest?

Depends on what you need. Do you need a PDA or a simple phone? Are you a "texter" or do you actually use your cell phone as a PHONE? ;) Do you like having individualized ringtones & images for callers, or does simple=better for you?

Nokia makes a good phone. Toshiba also makes a decent phone.

I got an iPhone because I got tired of taking a cell and an iPod everywhere. I wanted to combine the two into a single item; iPhone did that for me. Plus I'm a tech geek and find gadgets kewl ;-)

I'll jump in on the request for a new phone. I have a Samsung slider phone, and I would probably be better off making my own cell phone out of a turd. I'm on the road daily, and as soon as I'm out of city limits, it's hit or miss with reception. I just need a phone that is RELIABLE on service, and I don't need all the fancy bells and whistles.

Optimally, what I would like to get is an itty bitty phone that fits in my pocket nicely with AMAZING reception. The only functions I really want are bluetooth, and a phonebook.

But since those phones don't exist, I'm thinking about a smartphone. I have a PDA but don't take it much anymore because I have a desk job now. But could still use the functionality (for personal stuff at my desk). I'm not really sure I want to pay the extra $ for it.

I have Sprint, and I used to have a A900 "Blade". It's the better version of the RAZR pretty much. It was a good phone until I jumped into the pool with it on. Not sure if you can use any of them on Alltel but you can get a used one for 40 bucks. Only thing that kind of sucks is the battery.

I have a Sprint Mogul now, the HTC 6800. I'm still getting used to it, and I've never had a PDA phone but I'm learning more each day and liking it more each day. If I could only figure out how to work you tube on it.

Nope. Sprint is GSM service. Alltel is CDMA.

This is mine, and I love it....it has a "rubbery" texture to it, I've dropped it alot, doesn't affect it. Cost $199 1 1/2 years ago. Motorola i580:

Im on Alltel and carrying my first "smartphone",Blackberry Curve. Loving it.

The size is not bad....fits well in my front pocket with a leather skin on it.

The need for email access is vital to my job so that aspect of the service plan is not an issue. What I absolutely love is the ability to tether my berry to a laptop and have awesome connecton speed anywhere I have EVDO service, but thats another 10 bucks a month, which is my entire county and comes in handy working in emergency management.

If the Curve seems too big there is always the blackberry Pearl which is tiny.

If you see a need for a smartphone...go Blackberry. The wife carries a Moto Q and it likes to lock up.
