An ode to Gunther

Most coordinators get ousted once a new head coach arrives, yet Gunther Cunningham has been with the Chiefs through three different head coaches. I find this pretty amazing. Any thoughts?

The Franchise 07-25-2008 03:46 PM

They're all scared of him?

Boon 07-25-2008 03:47 PM

He's nice to Carl?

jidar 07-25-2008 03:49 PM

he's a ****in badass and if they tried to fire him he would rip Chuck Norris's arms off and beat the entire chiefs organization to death with them.

That, and he's good at what he does. But damn, I wouldn't want to piss him off ...

HemiEd 07-25-2008 03:54 PM

Sure, he is so ****ing stupid that he makes the HC feel better about himself.

RealSNR 07-25-2008 03:54 PM

This is very interesting. Would Kansas City hire THREE stupid head coaches would would hire Gunther?

Well, to be fair, Vermeil didn't count. But he was stupid for wanting to promote Peter Giunta, so Gunther was a much better pick.

I agree with you partly. Vermeil was forced into taking Gunther back, so Carl could clear his concious.

Not really. Hes a survivor more than anything.

Its telling that the Chiefs are the only organization that ever seem to really want his services.

When he left KC as head coach, all he could get was a job coaching LB's? Thats quite a demontion if you ask me. Why didnt any other teams at least offer him a coodinator position??

Gunther is a whole lot of sound and fury signifying nothing.

Yeah, but man... you should've seen him coach those LBs. It was like having Picasso paint your kitchen!

Greg Robinson ruined our defense. Gunther came back and suddenly the Chiefs D wasn't a laughing stock. Coincidence?

I was tired of it last time, no telling where this team could be with a competent DC.

Look, hes not the worst coach in the world, but hes hardly anything special. Special coaches are the ones that win championships.

Do you remember our Run Defense the past few years?? They still suffer from the same breakdowns at critical times. How about the 3rd down defense? Or lack of a 3rd down defense.

JuicesFlowing 07-25-2008 04:21 PM

I get your point. I'm not suggesting he's the best DC in the league ... I think he can make defenses better. and I'm glad we have him. I am just surprised he's survived so many "regime changes" ...

Ode To Gunther

By FAX.

Oh, Gunther, Oh Gunther, you are batshit nuts.
Some say you're a genius. Some say you're a putz.
You tell us you need just one player or two
And all will be well if Carl listens to you.

But those players come and they stink up the place
While you're sitting upstairs with chaw in your face.
And you spit and curse and then you spit some more
All in the name of a good team rapport.

Then next year you tell us it's all about scheme
And things will be better with our fav'rite team.
But that plan implodes as opponents score thirty
And our players whiff and don't even get dirty.

And when we fans say that it's all gone to hell
You tell us to screw off, we've got Kendrell Bell.
And if you don't like it, come in for a meeting
So you and your 'backers can give us a beating.

Then finally you have a big sit down with Herm
Who tells you, "It's okay." you just must be firm.
So you yell and blaspheme and kick fat cabooses
'Cause you're out of players and plays and excuses.

You've got it! You claim! It's not runs it's the passes!
(And the fact you can't find anymore big orange glasses.)
So you draft fat linemen who can't even run
And announce they're the answer. It's what you do, Gun.

Be fair; in his glory years Gunther had tremendous DTs which freed up his ends and backers to create plays. For the last decade, we have been trying to find the answer at DT to no avail. It is my belief that a franchise DT is at the core of Gun's genius AND that Dorsey could be that DT. Al will RUE the day he gave Gun his ticket back to dominance.

If players like Simms:cuss: & Siavii:cuss: lived up to their picks maybe we could have had a better D. Those guys were lush and not even Gunther could get them to be worth a Raiduhs

Now we got Glenn Dorsey :toast: and hopefully we struck gold with this pick.

Too bad those were guys that Goonther signed off of (Siavii in particular).

I don't know how Goonther still has a job as D-Coordinator of the Chiefs. Yes, put up huge numbers in 1995 & 1997 but with that much talent on D (and Marty as head coach) who wouldn't?

Gunther needs Baltimore-like talent to field a top ten defense, which basically says he's a product of his players, not the other way around.

He's nothing special and probably below average. Which is why he could only get a job as a LB coach once he was fired from KC.

Robinson, man or not, was not just a bad defensive coordinator. He was atrocious! Just having a safety or cornerback not run 10 yards up to the line of scrimmage and have him trying not to go offsides, thus the offense is 100%sure it's a blitz is enough to make a defense's stats improve noticeably. There are indeed many levels of rotten. Greg owned the bottom level.

Jawshco 07-25-2008 06:00 PM

When I think of Gunther, I think of cussing! LOL. He makes an art of a cantankerous attitude. I wish I still had that picture of him cussing out an opposing fan while inside his booth during a game. I remember seeing that live, and laughing for hours afterwards. I remember seeing that somebody took screen grab pic of it, but I couldn't find it to post it here. I'll keep looking.

He's an excellent playcaller. His 95 and 97 defenses were historic; I doubt there's a D-coordinator out there who could have done more. Marty just particularly complements him well because Marty is the end-all be-all of talent evaluation.

I disagree. First of all, do you remember Dave Adolph? The putz that Gunther replaced. That man did not know how to coach a defense. I remember how ecstatic I was when San Diego hired him away from us. I never did understand why. As far as him needing top talent to succeed, I think that can be applied to most any coach. I don't think anyone could have done anything with the turds that Gunther had when he came back.

Coming from someone with your knowledge and skills that's high praise, indeed, Mr. gblowfish. Gracias peepolo.

The fact is that I like Gunther, too. I don't know why this particular Muse was so critical. Ever since Gun came back, I've hoped he could put together another dominating D - not only for our sakes, but for his as well. I like his attitude and believe that, if our players could only find a way to play like he curses, we'd be in good shape.

FAX

DeezNutz 07-25-2008 10:30 PM

Given the way that Gunther's tenure as head coach ended, I think it's nothing short of remarkable that he was able to swallow his pride and return to KC, a place he obviously must have loved, a lot.

I don't think I'm a big enough person to have done this. Thus because of Gunther's emotional maturity (in this situation, anyway), there will always be a part of me that roots for his success, whether that's with the Chiefs or somewhere else. Preferably here.

So Dave Adolph sucked.

How does that detract from the fact that Gunther has sucked as for a decade and couldn't get a job a D-coordinator anywhere else in the league?

I've said this before and I'll say it again: The majority of Chiefs fans are far too myopic.

Similar to Gruden taking over the Bucs and Lovie Smith taking over the Bears, the pieces were in place already for them to succeed. That's my take on Goonther in the 90's.

This time around he's had to start from scratch and it shows. Only my three cents.

I know, Mr. Fax.

You HATE that word.

If I could find a suitable substitute, I would.

All Gunther needs are a few pro bowlers on his side of the ball and we'll be okay.

We've been awfully shallow in defensive talent for a while. Our best players need teeth.

He's an excellent playcaller.

The dude has got more mileage out of the 4 plays inside of the 10 yard line late in the game against Todd Collins and the Bills than any other DC in history.

Anymore all we get is second half breakdowns game-after-game-after-game. I know.... it's not because the other team is making better adjustments to his defense at halftime... it's because our defense is just tired.

There's no question that you need talent to succeed.
But almost every good coach gets one or two players to overachieve.

****her rarely gets players to simply achieve.
He has never had any player overachieve.

Its unbelieavable people are still making excuses for this Turd?? WTF?

Its probably because of the caliber of QB Todd Collins is and his Hall of Fame bound credentials. Makes sense to me.
