Suicide Among Children and Young Adults

A scourge by any measure, suicide is particularly devastating when it involves children, teenagers, and young adults. Consider this national data:
  • Suicide rates among adolescents and young adults in America nearly tripled between 1952 and 1996.
  • Between 1980 and 1996, suicide rates almost doubled among 14-15 year olds and rose by 14% in the 15-19 age group.

Were there as many teen pregnancies, drug addiction, DUI's and all that stuff in general in the 50's?

Lot's has changed and in some ways not for the better.

She needed to join CP and toughen up a bit.

Social Darwinism in action.

Oh wait...would that be considered bullying?

Those are some amazing numbers. I had no idea it was that high.

People didn't blast that out either, probably because of the shame. The globe shrinks everyday.

stevieray 12-12-2012 08:41 PM

reading the replies just confirms why these kinds of things happen to young adults.

I need to percolate on that one, Mr. BIG_DADDY.

As I mentioned, I've known several young people who chose suicide over the alternatives available to them. I need to reflect on whether or not the people around them (including parents) indicated at the time that they knew about their emotional problems. At the moment, I don't have a clear memory of that.

I am far from an expert on suicide but I seem to remember seeing this in articles written after bullying. The one thing I am aware of is the shitty parenting. IT never ceases to amaze me the emphasis so many parents have on making money and how little they have on building their child and really knowing them.

or let the kids beat the living piss out of bullies w/out fear of lawsuit.

Killing yourself is never the answer.

Killing the people who are bothering you is.

There were a lot fewer people back then, so no.

Any child who's self-esteem is that low is certainly a refection of their parents ability to raise them as well. Huge failure.

You're a man. You're going to view it like that. Think about what every young lady wants in high school vs what every young guy wants in a social setting.

A guy wants to be perceived as tough and women want the popularity etc.

Seems to me the most embarrassing times in high school are the ones that made me look weak (looking back now, not so much) because they hit what was important to me.
