Carlota69 02-20-2013 01:08 PM

So Im (finally) having knee surgery tomorrow.

I tore my ACL and Miniscus on Oct 4th. I was suppose to have surgery Dec 20th but sickness interfered. Then it got cancelled 2 more times due to illness (This cold and flu season have been brutal). Its now upon me, and Im still dodging sick people and totally stressed. Scared as hell too. Not so much of the surgery (altho, thats scary too), but the aftermath. Im not big on pain pills, and I never taken one. Hoping I can power thru it without taking drugs of the narcotic type.

I have an ice machine ready, and lots of PT schyeduled. Any other tips for recovery and pain management?

I think your therapy will go a lot smoother if you take the pain pills they give you

best of luck. just saying, the less pain you have when you start bending it, the more flexibility you'll gain. helps in the long run.

as for me, i got a chunk about the size of the palm of my hand cut off my back last thursday. then, to top it off, they took 4 lymph nodes out from under my my right arm. slapped in a couple drains and stapled me up and sent me home w/a bottle of percs and a stool softener. i've ate the piss out of them. got the drain taken out yesterday and friday they pull the staples friday.

hell, i can't move anyway, and the wife won't let me have any beer w/that script in the house.

LOL
I hear ya. I understand that if the pain gets too bad, Im going to have to make something happen. Just hoping Im a tough ol bitch!!!:D

Iowanian 02-20-2013 02:10 PM

It'll be fine Carlota. Relax

I mean the worst that can happen is the doctor has a hangover and botches the surgery....or they use a dirty instrument or don't wash the table good enough and you get a staph infection that requires an entire leg and a labia and a half to be removed.

Other than that....not much to worry about.

My guts are bad enough I never have been able to take the pain pills. It would make the PT easier if you could, but I've proven a human can do it without them.

no shit...when i was younger, after a few days i'd toss the stool softeners and save the pain meds for later. it's pretty much the opposite, now.
good luck carlota!

The most important thing is to push to achieve full range-of-motion (ROM) as soon as you can WITHOUT risking further injury. The best way to help with this is once the wounds heal to get in the bath tub and gradually increase the temp of the water. Soak for a while and then do ROM stretches. Do this EVERY night until you achieve full ROM.

Make no mistake about it you will be sore for a few weeks. Ice the knee to prevent swelling and sleep at night with an immobilizer on the knee to prevent inadvertant movement or putting your knee in a compromising position while you sleep. You will regret it if you don't.

Good luck!

Sorter 02-20-2013 02:55 PM

The best advice I can give is to stay consistent and positive with your rehab.

Yes yes. This is how I acheived ROM during Pre-hab. Im totally prepared for that.I also have an ice machine that will hook up to me and run 24/7 if I want it to. Apparently this is key in pain managment.

I'm headed the same way in a few weeks. I've heard from several people that within 3-5 days of the surgery the pain was already less than before.

Dayze 02-20-2013 03:43 PM

score some Deer Antler spray.

Braincase 02-20-2013 04:45 PM

Had both knees reconstructed. Drink lots of water. Listen to your therapist. Know your limits. Don't overdo it.

Fritz88 02-20-2013 05:05 PM

Therapy. Therapy therapy.

Ask for an experienced one. They make a whole lot of difference.

Good luck.

Water? I have great therapists. Been prehabbing for four months. How was the pain?

Carlota69 02-21-2013 10:00 PM

Well it's all done. My knee is repaired. The surgery went well, but the antethesia part did not. I feel like shit, but happy the surgery is over. Now, it's on to recovery...

Vegas_Dave 02-21-2013 11:11 PM

Scotch. Single malt. Let me know when and where and I'll bring it by!

Is this like a free offer or something?

Because I'll take some Lagavulin if you're just kicking it to the curb.

Yes, but not quite like that.
Water because dehydration is bad for healing I imagine?

gblowfish 02-22-2013 09:18 AM

We fully expect you to rush for 1,000 yards this season. Good luck on the rehab!

displacedinMN 02-22-2013 08:55 PM

Good for you.. Hope it all goes well

If you can, find something like this

http://www.breg.com/products/cold-th...e-cold-therapy

A cooler -filled with ice-then fill it with water.
with a motor-it will ciruclate water for many hours over your knee.

GREAT COLD RELIEF THAT CUTS DOWN ON PAIN AND SWELLING.
It was great after being on my feet teaching all day.

Rest. Rest.

use drugs only if you need it.

Good luck with the recovery. I'm sure those physical therapists will have you running around in no time.

My ice machine has been a miracle worker. I have it on 24/7, it's set at 43 degrees and I have been managing the pain without meds besides Advil and Tylenol. Grateful and lucky.
I'm bored to hell tho. Luckily my radio station will bring the equipment to my house tomorrow and I will be doing my show from my bedroom.
"KOMP 92.3 live from Carlotas Bedroom." I have tons of imaging and get well wishes from a variety of bands, like Three Days Grace, Adelitas Way and Deftones to name a few. I can't wait. I. Bored to tears and dying to get back to work. Should be fun.

Bowser 03-03-2013 10:16 AM

I can imagine the feedback you're getting from doing a live show from your bedroom, lol.

And good job making an effort to stay away from the pain meds. Not exactly the easiest thing to do in your situation.

Thanks. The reaction to the broadcast so far as been extremely positive. The rock stars dig it, the advertisers dig it and the listeners are all over it. The imaging is pretty funny as well.

I got the nerve block and it numbed my leg for 30 hours so I think tha helped my quest for no pain meds. I've done so much better than I thought I would. Thank god:)
