Killer apps for Android?

Since there's an iPhone version, I figured I'd start a Droid version. After being handcuffed by Sprint's SERO plan for the past two years, I finally ordered my LG Optimus S last night. It'll be here in about 24 hours. So, what toys should I play with when it arrives?

Fritz88 12-02-2010 12:09 AM

I own a Nexus and this thread could help.

For starters, GTasks. Will synch your tasks with your Gmail account.
TimeMobile. RadioTime, make sure you are on wifi or have good data plan.

There is an app called "My Collection Pro" and it scans your DVD/Blu-Ray/Video game UPC codes and creates a digital catalog that you can keep track of.

This is all according to my friend who has it. I haven't got an Android phone yet.

It's gotten pretty incredible reviews for a free phone. I don't really have anything to compare it to thus far, but I'm thrilled with the 2.5 hours of play time I've had with it.

Otter 12-03-2010 11:19 AM

I just called AT&T and my contract was in October. Picking up the same phone (LS670) after work or tomorrow during the day after reading reviews and comparing rates. It's not going to break heart to not have to deal with AT&T anymore either.

It's nerd off time biatch!!!

Free Android Game - Gameloft Dungeon Hunter - TODAY ONLY!
Gameloft, a mobile game company who has frustrated many of us with their non-Android Market approach to selling their games, has done something awesome today by offering up Dungeon Hunter for free! As far as I know, the deal is for today only, so you may want to jump on this right away.

All you have to do is open up your mobile browser and visit: http://www.gameloft.com/free-hd-game/

After that, you will be able to download the game, install it and enjoy! Well, it will require you to download an additional 181MB of data after installing, but you are good with that right? Awesome games, take up awesome space.

Confirmed working on the following devices:

- Motorola Droid Download the APK: From Gameloft [gameloft.com] or Hosted. [mediafire.com] For anyone having trouble. (Not sure what other devices it is compatible with)
- Motorola Droid 2 & Droid X
- Samsung Epic 4G
- Google Nexus One (HTC Passion)
- Droid Incredible by HTC
- HTC Evo 4G

Game does NOT appear to work on:
- HTC G1
- HTC G2
-Samsung Captivate
-t-mobile mytouch 4G
-Samsung Moment
-Intercept (Virgin Mobile)

I have downloaded some of the Apps mentioned here. Thanks everyone.

I don't do much gaming and that's why Andriod works for me. It is extremely practical and it integrates well with Google services which I use a lot.

Not sure if anyone knew about this, but you can sync your Calender/Contacts/Tasks with your gmail account.

Oh hell yes! I've been waiting for the game to come to Droid. Just saw they have an angry birds seasons as well, downloading both as I type this.

There are a lot of useful and fun apps, but the two most important IMO have already been mentioned: Advanced Task Killer and Lookout Mobile.

I like it, but it's got its drawbacks. There's a tapatalk thread around here somewhere if you want to search for it.

I believe there's a free version that lets you do everything except post if you want to give it a try.

Very belated props for TuneIn Radio. It was nice to be able to listen to postgame on the way to Wichita after the game without having to channel surf the whole way there. I just wish the damn NFL didn't have so many goofy contractual agreements that prevent TuneIn from streaming games.

I wasn't able to find the Philly/Green Bay game on the way and ended up just channel surfing for it on the AM.

I've gone back and forth about it. I used it for a while and really liked it, but I hate how much scrolling you have to do. I wish there were some options for configuring font sizes and whether the thread "preview" shows and that type of thing.

Right now, I'm just using http://m.chiefsplanet.com through the browser.

T-Mobile offered the G2 online for free, so I upgraded from G1... and it's given me a reason to look for the latest and greatest apps.

Has anyone used Open Home? I've tried several searches in the market, but all I ever come up with are skins.

Google Voice... used another visual voicemail app with the G1, but the G2 came with Voice. Free voice to text, and it emails you the audio and text... it's been out a while, obviously, but I didn't realize it was that much better than what I was using.

I never looked around for mobile FB chat for the G1, but found ebuddy, which looks pretty useful with FB, AIM, gtalk, msn, etc.

I downloaded Advanced Task Killer, because sometimes killing the browser helps when it's not downloading content, but I don't really think it's necessary for battery life... not from what I've noticed, anyway. And between the upgrade from 1.6 to 2.2, better processor speed, and having the apps in memory, the load time is basically like maximizing a window.

I downloaded Photoshop Express, but I've read there are better photo apps, and I'll probably try out a few different camera apps.

Mr Number call block is my new favorite app, because some douche in Wisconsin keeps asking for Vicki and I ran out of ways to say "You have the wrong number, stop calling me"... it does a simple pick up/hang up, almost always before the phone rings (granted, when he calls now it's usually 2 or 3 times within a few minutes... yeah, that must be frustrating getting hung up on like that. Dumbass.). /rant

The other Google apps are cool... navigation and maps of course, Earth, Goggles, Sky Map... they have a Listen app for audio feeds, podcasts, and news. It also has QuickOffice, Google Translate, a couple of news feeds and social media apps... great phone.

pr_capone 02-16-2011 12:35 AM

These are my must have apps... all free:

Dropbox (access up to 2GB of data in a predetermined folder on my home computer, can stream or d/l)

TeamViewer (basic VPN access to my home computer) - Not in the Market, you have to go to their website.

TV Shows (HUGE library of a bunch of TV shows)

Music Wizard (you can search and d/l any song you can search, then edit for a ringtone. you can also use it to listen to one single specific song w/o having to dl it)

Cox DVR (allows me to set recordings from my phone)

Wifi Manager (allows me to manage my wifi connections - widget)

Juice Defender (battery manager)

AdFree (removes the ads from the apps I dl - requires root)

Lookout (lets me find my phone if I lose it)

Wireless Tether (lets me use my phone as a wifi hotspot... FREE - requires root)

loochy 02-16-2011 09:51 AM

I just got my HTC Inspire 4g on Sunday. I'm still trying to figure out what kind of apps I want and need. I haven't rooted yet, but I plan to soon. :D

I recently switched to GO Launcher and lost the stock HTC Calendar widget, so I went off to find a replacement. I found Business Calendar Beta, and it does everything I need it to do. Syncs with Google calendars. The widget displays a month view with calendar entries as either bars or text. You can configure the widget so that tapping a day takes you straight to that day in the calendar app. Tapping a day in the app shows a pop-up with the details of that day.

Overall it's a really, really nice calendar app, and best of all it's FREE.

Amazon has released their Android Appstore, and it's actually pretty decent. They have the Angry Birds Rio exclusive, and it's free for right now, so if you're into that, go grab it while you can.

They're also giving away a paid app a day. Today's is Doodle Jump, which actually is pretty fun and addicting.

Be warned, you must have an Amazon account with a CC attached, even for free apps. I assume most of the world has that, but if you don't, no bitching to me about it.
