Warrior Dash
OK, I'll be headed to KC for Warrior Dash this weekend! My group runs at 3:00 on Saturday. Is anyone else doing it?

Unfortunately registration is closed... wish I would have seen that sooner... been wanting to do that, or a Spartan Race. http://www.spartanrace.com/
|
Yep, in the 10:30 heat on Saturday. Can. Not. WAIT!

I know a few people going on Sunday.
|
They look like they put on some sweet races. The obstacle races look like a fun way to mix it up with something else than a road race or a trail run. Shooting for 100m in Feb 2012 myself.
|
I think I'm going off at 10:30 on Sunday. I just realized I never got a confirmation email, though. I definitely have the charge on my credit card.

My sister in Washington had a blast doing it last week.

Me and my buddy are riding our bikes down from Omaha. We are running at 3 as well.

Ahhh. That makes more sense. I have cycling on the brain lately.

That looks kind of fun but how do you keep the ice cubes from falling out of your glass?

yep at 2:00

The site says some confusing things. There's no parking on site. It looks like parking is several miles away. We are supposed to bring a change of clothes to check-in.
If we bring a change of clothes to check-in, what will we do with them while we run? What will we do with money & stuff while we run? I hope someone has the answer to this. I do some local mud tuns & I usually lock everything in my car & then go change when I'm done. That doesn't seem to be an option here. |

Ah, I didn't see that. I don't know how I feel about checking my cash & phone while I run.

it's going to be hot as a mother****er out there, and I'm fighting a cold right now. I never get sick, so of course it's gotta be this week.

So, dudes who did it today....what did you think? Any words of advice for those of us dashing tomorrow?
|
It was fun..
Hot as F, even in the morning on the backside.. Wear turf or trailshoes that you no longer want.. If you are serious, get in the front when they fire the whistle/flame off.. If not you will behind a shitload of people on narrow trails.. As for check in.. They did a good job.. I would not take any electronics or such.. Just id and cash.. In order, get your packet, install stuff, go get your id badge for drinks, go to gear check, write your number in marker on your bracelet and check it in.. Wear sunscreen.. Worst obstacle of the whole course is trying to wash off.. Other then the obstacles are easy, but the course sucks.. longer then 3.1miles.. Say 3.7.. When you convert your money to tickets, count them there.. Lil ****ers ripped me off.. |
My daughter ran at 3....she was a muddy mess when she finished.
|
I finished it today. Unbelievably exhausting! Running on roads is to running on trails what riding a bike with training wheels is to riding a bike. I was sucking wind HARD. Even had to walk for a few parts, which is something I am dead-set against doing. I wasn't too far from the front of my heat and just about everybody around was as well at times.
My advice: 1. Yeah, if you are hard core at all, get to the front of the line before start. (Usual SOP for any race, but probably more important here.) 2. Stop for EVERY water station. I usually skip water on a 5K. But I skipped the first station of this race and regretted the hell out of it. 3. Doubleknot your shoelaces. Otherwise when you run through water and back out again, they will come untied. 4. At the end, when it's time to jump in the mudwater and crawl under barbed wire, don't try to just walk in. Jump in feet first and get down. Everybody who tried to wade in fell on their ass. Plus the cameras are broadcasting you to the whole complex at that point, so you want to look like you are still mean and ready to kill. Good luck! |
We're signed up for tomorrow. Does it cost to check your bag? Is the bag check pretty secure? This is my first 5k of any kind. Not excited for the jogging, but I'm pumped for the obstacles.

I appreciate the info, guys. I had planned to try to get to the front anyway, but now I know I need to for sure. I watched a video that a guy took at one of the previous ones (must have had a helmet cam or something) and it looked like he had to wait to get on to a few of the obstacles.

Really though, once everybody hits mud and water the rest of the race is one big exercise in not falling down. I am amazed I made it through without wiping out. |
Thanks for the info guys. I am pumped!
I have done a few marathons, can blow thru 5ks....but I am nervous about gettin hung up in some of these obstacles...mainly the cargo net stuff. Oh well... Is it hard to weasel your way towards the front of heats at the beginning or are people dicks and dont let you thru? |
Thanks for the info. I'll prob start near the middle or back... Going more to get muddy and have fun than to post a good time. Never done a 5k, but I have been doing 3 miles/night a few times a week in preparation. I think we start at noon tomorrow. If I like this one, I'll prob do RunRuckus in November. That one looks like a blast... climb across a horizontal pole 18 ft above water.

Edit: Realize the sign post thing is obvious info for you if you've done marathons and 5Ks, but FYI for newbies. |
The obstacles really aren't that difficult. However, the course is hilly and rocky in parts. Also, near all the water obstacles, it gets pretty slick. My Merrill's worked out pretty good, but I saw a lot of people in standard running shoes having a difficult time so wear some trail shoes if possible.
It was hot as balls, so get a little extra sodium in your diet if you can. |
Well I don't have any trail shoes and I'm sure as hell not going to buy some just to ruin them. Guess I'll be busting ass!

Oh, and according to the final results, I finished right ahead of Casey Wiegmann. Trying to decide if that's good or bad.

Do you find out your times once you cross the line...or do you have to wait until the evening once they post all the times online?

Just got back to Omaha. Stupid ****ers at the parking lot ****ed us over. There was 4 of us on 3 motorcycles and the website had said it was $10 per stall not per vehicle. We were going to just park all three bikes in one stall and pay the $10. They told us we had to pay $30. ****ing douchbags.
As far as the race goes it is muddy, slick and hilly. I ran it at 3:00 yesterday and it was ****ing hot. I was exhausted when I was done. Ran it in 45 minutes which was decent for the 35-39 group. I think I would have done better but I ran it in cut up jeans which were not ideal. Once they got wet it felt like I had a brick around my waistline. |
You ran the Warrior Dash in Jorts? What is the deal with people from Omaha?
|
looks fun

Just finished. Did it in about 39 minutes. Toughest part was not slipping on the muddy trails.

So I'm confused after looking at the website. Do you run by yourself or as a group? Are there beer stations or is everyone sloshed before starting?
This seems cool. |
Quote:
Once you finish the dash you get a beer. Probably wouldn't attempt the dash sloshed. It was tough enough trying to stay hydrated. As of 11am on Sunday, there was said to be at least 30 people who had passed out from the heat. I saw a couple go down in person. If you weren't a dumbass and stayed hydrated...it was a fun race. |

I think I may have been an unreported #58. I felt terrible all day yesterday. Running that with a hangover was probably the worst decision I've ever made. |
Quote:
I started the race at about a 7 minutes/mile pace. That lasted until the first obstacle...I took it pretty easy the rest of the way. The heat was ridiculous at times. |
Quote:
Yeah, it was very cool. |
I felt good before and after the race yesterday.
Feeling it today tho. I threw my back out a couple of weeks ago so I have been dealing with an acute lower back strain since. Popped a couple advil before the race...felt fine. Today...I am paying for it. Can't bend over and am very guarded. In addition, I am hoping I don't get ecoli or some weird shit like that. I went to the creek to wash off after the race as the water-truck area was essentially a large mud-pit. Later to find out there was a dead raccoon in the creek about 20 yards from where I was... |

I would have rather just continued to think of you as a jorts wearing dufus. Now I have to think of you as a costumed Hulk freak. This sucks for me. Did you even consider the ramifications?
