Miami's Martin leaves team after 'emotional breakdown'

Jonathan Martin leaves Dolphins after 'breakdown'

An unusual situation is unfolding in Miami, where Dolphins right tackle Jonathan Martin has left the team after suffering an "emotional breakdown" this week.

NFL Media's Jeff Darlington reported Wednesday that Martin is currently seeking help with his family after an incident at the team's cafeteria, according to team sources.

Martin is listed on the team's injury report with an illness, and is doubtful to play Thursday against the Cincinnati Bengals. Fox NFL insider Jay Glazer reported that Martin was the victim of a prank at the cafeteria, becoming enraged enough to "smash his food tray on the ground."

The second-year pro has not been with the team since that time. Darlington reports that Martin immediately sought treatment at a local hospital. He has since left the hospital and is now spending time with his family, according to team sources.

Martin opened the season as the Dolphins' replacement for Jake Long at left tackle. He was moved to right tackle when the team acquired Bryant McKinnie via trade last week. Tyson Clabo is expected to start in Martin's place on Thursday.

Yeah. Stress and anxiety can be a really bad thing. I wonder if this has to do with learning a new position or getting "demoted" from left tackle, or if it's a locker room problem that's been brewing for a while.

Sure-Oz 10-30-2013 05:16 PM

FOX Sports' Jay Glazer reports Dolphins RT Jonathan Martin has "gone AWOL from the team the last couple days."
Per Glazer, Martin had an incident in the team cafeteria this week when teammates jokingly said they wouldn't sit at a table with him. Martin reportedly "flipped out, smashed a food tray on the ground, took off, and they haven’t seen him since." Glazer adds that Martin has entered a treatment facility, though it's unclear what kind of treatment he's seeking. The Dolphins have listed him as doubtful for Thursday night against the Bengals. Tyson Clabo has been reinserted into the lineup at right tackle. It's unclear how long Martin will be away. The Miami offensive line is in shambles.

Maybe he smells really bad? He musta did something.

Report: Dolphins are concerned about relationship between Martin, teammates
Posted by Mike Florio on October 31, 2013, 7:47 PM EDT
Martin AP

At a time when Dolphins tackle Jonathan Martin has cautioned folks to not believe everything they read, Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald has given us something else to read. And to believe. Or not.

Per Salguero, the Dolphins are “concerned” about the “relationship past and future” between Martin and his teammates. More specifically, the teammates gave Martin the nickname “Big Weirdo” last year.

A second-round pick in 2012, Martin won’t play tonight, due to an unspecified illness. He reportedly went AWOL this week, slamming down a tray of food after being given grief by teammates in the cafeteria.

He reportedly will be out indefinitely.
I can see why he snapped.

I wasn't as excited about the Philbin hire as I know some were. I can't help but wonder how much of this is on him. A coach is supposed to be a psychologist too. Philbin always struck me as an X's and O's guy who runs a tight ship, but is totally socially awkward. There's some red flags beyond Martin that make me question if this guy is a good head coach.

I said, "IF" this was happening a lot which it sounds like it was, the head coach is the first person to make it stop. Or to recognize the problem. You really think this breakdown just happened out of nowhere?

But right now, it's not just Martin. There's apparently a lot of fighting with the coaching staff. You've got players who are publicly calling out their coaching staff. This has happened multiple times. And the Dolphins are, by the way, riding a 4-game losing streak going into today. The Dolphins' locker room is a mess, and it's not just Martin.

Yeah, it's hysterical that I'm getting called out for questioning a coaching staff that is riding a 4-game losing streak with players continually running their mouths and coaches in-fighting.

A coach and I were talking yesterday (he hadn't heard this story), and he played college ball at the UofA. He was telling me about a guy they started callingTNT because he got "blown up" by a defensive back in spectacular fashion once. It evidently started really bugging the guy, so he asked the coach to intervene and make the players stop calling him that... evidently that didn't go so well and the ridicule just got even worse. Boys will be boys, even when they're in their 30s.

It's widely believed Rhodes is gay, but he's not on a roster anymore. I don't think Jonathan Martin is the first gay player in the NFL, but the theory that he's gay could explain the hazing that set him off.

I think there's some truth to it. I also wonder if this would ever happen on a Tom Coughlin or Bill Bellichick run team. Or if Tony Dungy is a guy who could counsel a guy like Martin. A few years ago, I ripped on Romeo because the guy can coach, but he just can't handle people. He wants to be everyone's best friend. Everything I get from Philbin it's that the guy is borderline antisocial. The way Philbin cut Ochocinco on Hard Knocks made everyone cringe -- it wasn't mean, it was just really awkward. But there's other symptoms too. He's known for giving really awkward press conferences and being closed off to the media. And his team has a history of throwing coaches under the bus, which is where a guy like him has to put his foot down.

I feel like the psychology aspect of coaching is so underrated. I know guys like Belcher and Martin are unstable and maybe were doomed no matter what. But it's fair to ask if either Romeo or Philbin are the right guys to identify the problem, and fix it. I don't know. I just feel like there are lots of coaches in the NFL that would never, ever stand for this kind of locker room behavior.

Jonathan Martin - T - Dolphins

FOX Sports' Mike Garafolo reports Dolphins RT Jonathan Martin's (illness) absence is considered "indefinite."
He'll be placed on the reserve/non-football illness list shortly. It's believed LG Richie Incognito -- one of the heads of the Dolphins' team leadership council -- was at the forefront of the "bullying" that led to Martin's mental meltdown. The Fins will move forward with Tyson Clabo at right tackle.

Figures it was Incognito...heard that guy is an epic douchebag.

The NFL is not high school or even college sports. It's a work place. A different set of rules apply. I imagine this is a limited opportunity for(3-4 years) most to set themselves up for the rest of their lives.
