Official Inaguration day thread

A core part of how we conduct our democracy. In this case, there is no transfer of power so maybe it doesn't have the panche but its still I think the most pomp and circumstance that we allow our self's to have in our democracy.

Crowd looks huge.

Where is George W Bush? Didn't see him introduced?

Deberg_1990 01-21-2013 10:31 AM

can anyone tell me why our government spends so much money on these dog and pony shows? Unnecessary, overindulgent, there are no words............Its not just Obama.

Dayze 01-21-2013 10:34 AM

no joke. Do the GD inaguration in the Congress or something.

pointless, waste of money.
peanuts compared to the debt etc, but a waste nontheless.

That would be like Lincoln showing up for Carter's inauguration and W doesn't roll that way.

uhhhh its all paid for with private donations. And every President does this, not just Obama. Don't get the reference here? You think Obama is the only one to do this?

But the sentiment is what I allured to in my OP. Americans just don't like pomp and circumstance, never have. Probably because the Brits were so full of it and we were going to be different.

To celebrate the peaceful and ordely transfer of power. It is a waste of money, but I think it is all privately funded. I do think they tone it down for a 2nd term--as they should.

Probably have to look it up to verify, but I'm pretty sure the former presidents always attend unless there is a health issue.

BigRedChief 01-21-2013 10:53 AM

What time will the Military be parading past Dear Leader?

Fine, Fine use of taxpayer money. Probably extra cheap paying all of those local, state and federal employees to work all day on a paid holiday.

It is NOT all paid for by private donations...maybe the Shrimp for the party....but this will cost taxpayers $100mil

I don't blame the guy for not wanting to show his face. He didn't show up at the R convention either, although they may have told him to stay away.

How am I being petty? As a former president, W holds a prestigious place in US history and it seems petty not to show up at an inauguration. He should do so simply out of tradition and respect for the office.

How much will all the inaugural events cost? It's hard to say.

While most events that occur in the capital have a hard-and-fast budget, the inauguration's many moving parts, safety concerns and large geographic reach make it hard to quantify – especially before the main event.

In 2009, ABC reported the total cost of Obama's first inauguration was $170 million. While incumbent presidents historically spend less on a second inauguration, it's unclear what the total bill will be this time around. Analysis of some of the known appropriations so far puts the total at $13.637 million, but it will no doubt be a much larger price tag when everything is accounted for.

Iowanian 01-21-2013 11:17 AM

Sorry but thats BS. He's not by his bedside 24 hours a day. Jeb could have been at Dad's bedside for a 1/2 day while George W. showed up like all past presidents.

Don't you mean Coronation?

As far as private donations funding the thing... Just think of the actual GOOD that could be accomplished if those same dollars were spent on something the country NEEDS. It's just an illustration of how clueless the citizens of this doomed nation have become. (And yes, Bob Dole would be saying the same thing if it were not a D taking the oath.)

How about if even 10% of the people who are there to worship their Savior in Chief donated the dollars they spent on travel and lodging to a local food bank or shelter?

small potatoes. How about we don't spend $10 billion on the F-22 that the DOD doesnt even want? The $20 billion for a new tank that the DOD doesnt want?

Yeah. Let's just keep on ignoring the small potatoes. That's fixing our communities.

Besides. It's the government's job to take care of all that!

I'm just saying there is a shitload of money spent that there is no need to spend. $4 billion in corporate welfare to the oil companies? They are making $30-40 billion in profits every year.

I'm all for getting deadbeats off the government dime. I've always been for placing limits on how long and how much someone can be on the government dole.

But despite all the money that could be saved in cutting waste in the DOD and social programs they pale in comparison in what needs to happen in medicaid and medicare. Thats what is going to kill us in the long term.

That, and private benefits for causes Bob Dole supports, are exactly where Bob Dole's money goes. Just dropped $535 at a benefit last Sunday to help a local lady get the missing chunk of her skull re-installed (since Medicaid doesn't deem it necessary).

You won't see Bob Dole contributing a dime to a political campaign.

You won't see Bob Dole contributing a dime to a political campaign.

I donated but I have easily tripled that by giving clothes and food to the local Samaritan Center.

And for comparison sake Bush's second inauguration cost around $158 million with only 400,000 people showing up . Only $42 million of that was covered by donations.

Iowanian 01-21-2013 02:56 PM

So you're saying the Bush Inauguration cost $158mil and Obama 1 cost $170 mil.

Yes that is correct. Obama did get around $54 million in donations in 2009. So minus donations Bush's second inauguration cost taxpayers $115 million and Obama's first cost $116 million with triple the people showing up.

Estimates for Obama 1 crowd were around 1.5 million. The latest estimate was around 700,000 showed up this time.

For every hypocritical and dense Republican there is a Democrat who holds himself to the same standards. They are labels and posturing as meaningless as skin color, what kind of car you drive or how you comb your hair.

But if it makes you feel better of your cause...by all means. The funny part is you can't...
