I used brand new metrics from Fangraphs to argue that Luke Hochevar is the biggest underachiever in the game.

heh, Hillman...what a joke of a manager. The Royals have had some bad ones, but he might have been the worst.

Maybe it's just perception, but it seems like pitchers have more arm problems in today's game than they did 25/30 years ago?

It does indeed seem that way. I don't know if it really is or not. I do know that a starting pitcher was once expected to finish the game he started. Now that's hardly even considered. It's become a rarity... yet you're right when you say it seems like there are more injurys from less pitching now.

Nice to have some statistical support to back up what we see on the field.

From a scouting point of view, I see two things:

1) Hochevar's slide step delivery is horrid. He has significantly diminished stuff and results when using this pitch.
2) Hochevar focuses way too much on getting ground balls when runners are on, instead of being more aggressive and chasing strikeouts.

Those are both things that would lead to higher BA with runners on and lower strand rates.

Naturally. We can sweep the Tigers just don't ask us to beat teams that are worse than us.

stonedstooge 09-01-2012 05:20 PM

David Lough and Manny Pina are ready for major league action but Wil Myers isn't.
