NBA Jam was rigged.

Back in the 90′s, the Chicago Bulls were unbeatable, unless you were playing the arcade game, NBA Jam.

In a recent interview with ESPN’s magazine, the video game’s lead designer, Mark Turmell, revealed that NBA Jam was rigged against the Bulls.

Turmell is a Detroit Pistons fan and told the sports magazine:

“If there was a close game and anyone on the Bulls took a last second shot, we wrote special code in the game so that they would average out to be bricks. There was the big competition back in the day between the Pistons and the Bulls, and since I was always a big Pistons fan, that was my opportunity to level the playing field.”

There was also a special code written in to lower Scottie Pippins ratings whenever he came up against the Pistons.

According to Turmell, fights would break out in arcades over who’s turn it was to play. Midway eventually sold more than 20,000 units and was the first to have secret characters players could unlock.

While not this specifically....I always had my doubts about how the computer would always come back and make it close with miraculous shots, etc.

I thought the same of madden in the 90's.

Good for this guy though.

I would have probably coded elway or sharpe to get their leg broken in week one if I was on the madden dev team

That's generally par for the course with early sports games. Had to make the game "fair" without having any sort of semblance of a real AI.

most sports games have a yo yo effect with scores. i dont know about now, but in the early to mid 2000's there was. Well, both players had to be good to actually see it. lol if your bad, no ammount of help was going to help.

I'm going to take my NBA Jam Nintendo game back to WalMart to see if I can get my money back.

Rain Man 10-02-2013 05:07 PM

I guess in a way it was realistic since the refs in the real NBA rigged games.
