Will a woman play in the NFL someday?

Female will compete at regional combine for first time

The NFL debuted its regional scouting combine concept back in 2011. Ten cities this year hold a regional combine from January to March, with the best players going to a super-regional in Dallas in April.

The March 2-3 New Jersey regional will mark a first in the regional combine process: A female player will compete.

Lauren Silberman of New York City will participate as a kicker. A club soccer player at Wisconsin, Silberman has taken a different path than your average college kicker. She wrote a Master's thesis at MIT about how athletes use video games to enhance their own performance. She then founded a consulting company Double Play that helps athletes use video games for virtual training purposes.

"I was not aware that I was the first female registrant," Silberman told NFL.com on Tuesday. "I was actually hoping that the 2012 historical milestone rule, to allow women to play, would prompt more women to attend tryouts this year. But for me, what's important is to finally have a chance to fulfill my dreams by trying out to play in the world's most competitive football league."

Silberman, 28, will be competing against plenty of college kickers. (Greg "Legatron" Zuerlein was a success story from last year's regional combines.) She's the ultimate long shot in an event full of them. Her story reminds me of Albert Breer's piece on making the regional combines an American Idol-style buildup to the main NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

"The opportunity to attend this event could not be more exciting. Getting to meet interesting people and perfect my technique from others could not be more rewarding. ... Regardless of the outcome of the tryout, I hope there is a way I can contribute and strengthen the league," Silberman said.

We wish Silberman all the best at her tryout and congratulate her on making some history.

This has already happened.
Don't you remember Bill Kenney?
Best chick to ever play in an NFL game, much less start at QB.

Kicker/Punter is the only place I could see a female being able to play for any sustainable amount of time.

Men can barely plan in the NFL, let alone a woman.

Frosty 02-20-2013 11:16 AM

Didn't the Chiefs have a female soccer player in a few years ago to try out as a kicker? Maybe during the Gunther years?

Dayze 02-20-2013 11:16 AM

Michelle Jeneke at C.

oldandslow 02-20-2013 11:17 AM

One already does - QB for the home team.

Deberg_1990 02-20-2013 11:32 AM

Kicker/Punter maybe....definately not a line position. Maybe a WR? or DB? HUGE maybe....

This is what I was remembering. Not really a tryout; just a publicity stunt.

I would use Bernice from South Side Towing as a run stopper in short yardage situations any day of the week

CoMoChief 02-20-2013 02:22 PM

only as a kicker...possibly. I could see that in the future.

any other position that mainly requires contact? absolutely not in my lifetime.

but who knows....maybe eventually NFL will become National Flagfootball League and then maybe women would be able to play.

Mr. Laz 02-20-2013 02:56 PM

There will be a female kicker at some point.

probably a punter

i guess a female QB is feasible, but i dunno ... i would think a female would get crushed the first real sack from a 300+ pound lineman.

Lzen 02-20-2013 02:58 PM

I just never have liked the idea of women playing men's sports. Our bodies are built differently. Plus, there are other issues when mixing genders in this way.

I was at the Y last night playing hoops. After playing a few games I was sitting out a game watching when this small girl who had just arrived with a group of guys got in the next game. I rarely see girls play with us guys out there and usually it's for good reason.

I sat back and watched the game and noticed that she was hacking quite a bit when making a steal or when trying to keep someone from getting up a good shot. Now don't get me wrong, she was not a bad player. She had a decent mid range shot and played the passing lanes well for steals. But her size was a problem for her, especially on defense.

When I got in the next game, I grabbed a rebound with the intention of putting it back in. I knew she was right next to/behind me. So, I gave her a good bump to clear some space to put it back in. My boys commented about that later. I simply said that I had seen her hacking people to prevent them from making their shots earlier and I wasn't about to let her do that to me. There were a few times that she tried to set a screen on me. In cases like that, I will just about run through the screen so that the screener thinks twice about doing that again. Or you had better know how to set a solid screen. With this girl being about 80 or more lbs less than me, that was almost unfair. :D Needless to say, she didn't try to screen me very much.

But you know the way I see it, if she wants to play with the big boys then she has to know that she's gonna get banged around like that because that's what we do to each other. It's just how basketball is played. And she's gotta be able to take it or go play with the girls. She actually didn't have a problem with it so I respected her for that.

But the other problem was that when she had the ball my middle son (16 years) didn't want to block her. Keep in mind that this is the boy that will block anyone (including and especially me) if he gets the chance. But he didn't play as hard of defense against her simply because she was a girl. That's ridiculous. I gave him crap about it later, though.

tooge 02-20-2013 02:58 PM

kicker only. Then they'd have to come up with some new sexual tackling rules or guys would basically be hump tackling them whenever they got a chance.

Honestly, though, wouldn't it be pretty ****ing cool if a woman was able to be competitive in the NFL at any position at all? I'd root for her.

**** no. You think any woman can take a ****ing hit from Patrick Willis? Get real! That's like saying WILL HOMETEAM EVER PLAY IN THE NFL? **** no, because he will get decimated, day 1, play 1, by a ****ing WR on special teams. And so will any woman.

Whatever. There are women who are mentally and physically tougher than most men; if they have the physical ability to match, I'd love to see them compete.

Even if that's true, it hardly matters because most men don't play in the NFL. Just...y'know?...give it a rest.

Not many, but you could say the same about men. There's no doubt that, on average, men have an advantage in most of the physical aspects that are valued in football. However, there are plenty of players in the NFL (and more in college) that achieve success based on instinct and motivation. I have a hard time believing that there isn't a single woman out there that couldn't match the play of the average college football player and challenge for a spot on an NFL roster.

I doubt that you'd see women reaching truly elite status at most positions in the NFL due to physical differences, but there are some very impressive female athletes that have a number of desirable mental and physical traits that could be above-average in football. The best female athletes in the world compare very favorably to a large portion of players in the NFL, but they understandably make the choice to pursue a sport that they can truly be elite in rather than struggle to make the team. Because of that, it's just a matter of motivation. If you could get the best female athlete in the US to specialize in football, I have no doubt that they'd challenge for a spot on an NFL roster.

That's not entirely true. In my teenage years, I played football with some pretty big guys and they didn't back down. Long story short... I got my ass kicked. LMAO I couldn't kick or block worth a shit, so I usually played WR and occasionally QB.

I suppose in the NFL it could be different though and some would "take it easy" on a female player. Who knows.

My view on it is simple... if a female thinks she can handle it and she's good enough to make the cut, let her play.

J Diddy 02-20-2013 07:45 PM

I think you are severely underestimating the speed + strength of just about any NFL player at just about any postion. The guys that suck? They are still faster and stronger than 98% of humans.

Those female Olympic sprinters that are absolutely ripped? No way they are stronger than a DB, WR or RB, and they might not even be as fast.

A female might be able to compete for accuracy in kicking short field goals, but are they strong enough to hit consistently from 40-50 yards. Doubt it.

MVChiefFan 02-20-2013 09:33 PM

There is no way on earth that any woman could play in the NFL and it's not even close. In fact, you could take the woman who would come the closest to it and put her in a division III college game and she would get killed. It always kills me when people have an inflated sense of women athletes! I know that sounds sexist but it's true.

I don't disagree with your opinion about men being better. Women aren't built like men, (well, I should say that the majority of us aren't).

However, I'm confused by your desire to not get physical when playing sports with women. I mean, are the women you play sports with prissy or are you just being respectful because of them being the "weaker sex"?

When I was living in Columbia, my roomate was dating a girl that lived w/ 2 women MU bball players. Many times they scrimmage against men off the street from the rec leagues or anyone else they can find that can actually play.

Well me and my roomate went up for a practice session or scrimmage if you will. Our tallest guy was 6'5 but 3 of us can play aobve the rim, about the same or maybe an inch taller than the female MU center. We were just ****ing around on offense but we did D it up on defense. If we were to keep score if probably would have been 45-12 at halftime....most of their points from FT's.

The game was a little more competitive in the 2nd half of the game because we were gassed and they were in MUCH better shape than we were. Still won by 40-50 pts probably. It's just a completely different level/speed of play playing against grown men. Men play above the rim, women don't. Had we been in good shape and were coached w/ set plays offense etc I don't think they would have scored 20pts.

This is the best the NFL could do? Surely there is a better woman out there somewhere?
