Vikings' Jared Allen: 'Passing Derrick Thomas means everything'

With four sacks in his last three games, Vikings defensive end Jared Allen is ascending the all-time list in earnest. His 126 sacks rank 14th.

Allen is a half-sack behind the late Derrick Thomas, who is not just another player on the roll call. The former Kansas City Chiefs outside linebacker set the standard for pass rushing in the 1990s during an 11-year career that suddenly ended when Thomas was killed in a January 2000 car crash.

Allen has more sacks than any NFL player since joining the Chiefs in 2004. He has been chasing Thomas' ghost ever since.

"Passing Derrick Thomas means everything," Allen said Thursday. "His reputation is legend."

Allen studied Thomas' speed-rush technique in the Kansas City film room and recalled former Chiefs coach Gunther Cunningham fawning over the player who set the single-game sack record with seven against Seattle on Nov. 11, 1990.

"I've always tried to keep pace with him," said Allen. "I knew if I wanted to be relevant and the best at what I do, I at least had to be up with his numbers. To have an opportunity to pass him sooner one year than he did is awesome. It's kind of surreal at times."

Odds are against Allen catching sack masters Bruce Smith (200) and Reggie White (198), who rank Nos. 1-2, respectively.

Allen, 31, would need to maintain his 0.8 sacks-per-game average over five more seasons to eclipse 200.

Why be bitter. We got value for Allen.

Branden Albert and Jamaal Charles definitely made up for his loss.

Allen could very well be a HOF player. Charles also has a good shot if he maintains his output for 3 more seasons.

marshall faulk was on the local radio talking about Jamaal today. said he's got a lot left to do, but he could do it now that he's in the WCO.

Not to knock McCluster or anything, ;), but Marshall's spin move was EPIC. If Jamaal had Faulk's hesitation and spin moves, there would be no question who the GOAT was.

Would rather have Albert and Charles if it was a choice but still wish he stayed a Chief.
