WaPo….Give Obama a third term

http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinio...809_story.html

As President Obama faces a small revolt within his own party, a Washington Post op-ed is calling for the United States to end presidential term limits and allow him to run again in 2016.

“Barack Obama should be allowed to stand for re election just as citizens should be allowed to vote for — or against — him,” writes New York University Jonathan Zimmerman professor of history and education. “Anything less diminishes our leaders and ourselves.”

Zimmerman argues that the president would enjoy more deference on such unpopular initiatives as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and the recent nuclear-arms deal with Iran if he had a legal opportunity to seek additional terms in office.

The cult of personality runs deep.

In 1947, Sen. Harley Kilgore (D-W.Va.) condemned a proposed constitutional amendment that would restrict presidents to two terms. “The executive’s effectiveness will be seriously impaired,” Kilgore argued on the Senate floor, “ as no one will obey and respect him if he knows that the executive cannot run again.”

And Obama would be "obeyed and respected" if he ran a 3rd time? What about a 4th, 5th, 6th? His poor approval ratings have nothing to do with term limits.

I might be able to see this argument if the current state of Washington had true checks and balances between the branches. Given the accumulation of power the executive branch has grabbed over the years, this would be a monumentally stupid course to take.

I heard rumblings of this being reported months ago from someone on the right. Now reaching the mainstream.

What is with the left and it's LOVE of state power. This was recommended under Clinton too.

Obama just doesn't deserve any consideration for this considering the lack of prosperity happening under him.

This is another indication of the desire to accumulate power.

I'd add, the reasons in that original post as stated, are totally baseless.

So, trial balloon?

Op Ed from New York University professor. Enough said. Lenin would probably consider him too left leaning.

If there is one thing that would fix America, it's another GWB presidency. :shake:

Bill Clinton is more likely to get re-elected if they allow unlimited terms than either Obama or GWB.

Twelve years under this twit might just destroy the country.

You're eliminating one key element between what you said and what it said: election.

It said he should be able to run, it does not say give him a 3rd term.
