Arkansas Prank Went Wrong

CNN) -- A 15-year-old girl in Little Rock, Arkansas, is dead, police say, because of a prank that went horribly and tragically wrong.
Adrian Broadway was shot in the head and died early Saturday morning.
She was with a group of teenagers who had gone to a house to do a "retaliation" prank on another teen who'd done a prank on them on Halloween, according to the Little Rock Police Department.
The teenagers told police they had thrown toilet paper, eggs and mayonnaise on a car parked there.
As they were leaving, a man came out of the house and opened fire.
Broadway was struck in the head and died.
Another teenager, the driver, suffered injuries to his right arm. He was transported to a hospital, where he was treated and released.
Police have identified the shooting suspect as 48-year-old Willie Noble. He was charged with one count of first-degree murder, one count of a terroristic act and five counts of aggravated assault, they said.
Bond was set at $1 million.
"I got the news from my mom who said that Adrian had got a gun wound to the head, and I just dropped the phone immediately and started crying," Broadway's friend, Laguyia Bland, told CNN affiliate KARK.
"They was trying to be teenagers," Bland said. "As you know teenagers make mistakes, and this was one of those mistakes."

Seems reasonable response..

Everyone loses here.

A man has a right to defend his car/home and when he's woken up in the middle of the night and doesn't know what's going on...

...on the same note I could have been killed 100x for doing just this.

Yeah but if someone is "attacking" your car, you would think one would at least try to get a look or feel for what was going on before they started spraying rounds.

Braincase 02-18-2014 06:50 AM

Guns don't kill people. People kill people. Guns do make it easier, though.

bevischief 02-18-2014 06:55 AM

There has to be more to this story.

I am thinking the same thing. Possibly things got thrown at the homeowner when he stepped outside? If so that changes this dramatically.

Lex Luthor 02-18-2014 07:08 AM

I'm all for the right to own guns. I own 2 handguns myself. But I also believe that if a gun owner takes out his gun and fires it when it is NOT a case of self-defense, he needs to be held accountable.

I'd throw the book at this guy. He was defending HIS CAR. That doesn't justify the use of deadly force.

Plus, they were LEAVING the scene when he came out and opened fire.

Cannibal 02-18-2014 07:08 AM

So now we can potentially legally murder Halloween pranksters? Schweet! Once step closer to legalizing murder!

Why Not? 02-18-2014 07:10 AM

Yes, we can legally murder Halloween pranksters, which is why the article says he was arrested and charged with first degree murder.

Donger 02-18-2014 08:57 AM

I guess warning shots aren't big in Arkansas?

FishingRod 02-18-2014 08:58 AM

With the first degree murder charge it sounds like we are missing some details. Just speculating but, perhaps some threats beforehand in person or in the form of phone, maybe face book, where the shooter had the chance to have a premeditated response to something. A threat of “I’m going to blow up your car and burn down your house while you are asleep” could predispose someone to shoot first and ask questions later. The shooter might just be a notecase. There are people that will try to kill you for walking on their lawn

Keep in mind this happened in Little Rock, Arkansas. I don't know where it ranks currently but it wasn't very long ago that Little Rock had the highest murder to population ratio in the nation.
Although we may know their actions after the fact we don't know if this person did or not. Evidently there was a group, gang, of them. This girl may not have had a gun but that is generally not the case when dealing with a group of teens.

Middle of the night, you hear people outside your home messing with your car, step outside and start having objects thrown your way, again, in the dark. That's seems like a pretty good excuse to start shooting.

While the dumbshit kid obviously didn't deserve to die for his stupidity, I do take exception to the author of the story referring to vandalism of someone's property as a "prank", or the kid's friend referring to it as a "mistake".

well, you can always call the cops too! There's no way I'd go outside with a loaded gun and just start firing shots, that is absolutely the worst possible thing to do because you NEVER know who is out there. Maybe you end up shooting your neighbor who heard the noises and was coming over to help.

Point being, there is no justification for this shooting. The man who shot the gun was not in danger himself. Sure, his car was getting messed up and that sucks, but it's not worth taking someone else's life.

Arkansas state code 5-2-608 says deadly force may be used against another person if the“person reasonably believes the use of deadly physical force is necessary to prevent the commission of arson or burglary by a trespasser.” Burglary hardly sounds the same as someone “using deadly force against you”. In fact, burglary is defined in Arkansas law as:

5-39-201. Residential burglary
(a) (1) A person commits residential burglary if he or she enters or remains unlawfully in a residential occupiable structure of another person with the purpose of committing in the residential occupiable structure any offense punishable by imprisonment.

Unless they've changed the law in Arkansas since 2010, the shooter would seem to be in deep kimchi.
