And what barbecue, around 80 operations to choose from — spicy to sweet, bare bones dive to white tablecloth, heart of the city or afternoon drive in the country.

Here is the current list of establishments in and around KC. But barbecue fans beware, call ahead first to make sure they are open.

Poll just took the most often mentioned as the best. Listed alphabetically. You can only choose one choice and its a public poll.

I'm goin with Bates City... just had it the other night....and was delicious.

Saulbadguy 05-13-2009 01:01 PM

Bryants has gone downhill, I love the taste but i've consistently gotten cold meals the past few times ive been there.

DaneMcCloud 05-13-2009 01:02 PM

I just had LC's for the first time this past weekend at the Los Angeles BBQ festival and it was pretty good but not great.

It was much better than the Memphis BBQ that we had (and the North Carolina as well). Waaaaaaaaaaaaay too much vinegar in those sauces! Nasty!

When I visit, I prefer Zarda's or JackStack in OP out of all the rest.

CoMoChief 05-13-2009 01:03 PM

Mmmm Oklahoma Joes..........yum

blaise 05-13-2009 01:06 PM

I just had Jack Stack for lunch, pretty damn good- but I gotta go with Oklahoma Joe's. I like their Carolina style pulled pork. Admittedly, I haven't been to most of those places though.

Fire Me Boy! 05-13-2009 01:07 PM

Any/all are better than what I've had since being in South Carolina.

Dartgod 05-13-2009 01:09 PM

Has anyone ever been to Snead's? I've lived near there for over 10 years and never stopped in, but I never hear them mentioned when discussing BBQ joints.

rageeumr 05-13-2009 01:10 PM

Tough call for me. If I'm looking for a sit-down "nice" joint, it's gotta be Jack Stack. But I end up at OK Joe's more because I'm typically feeling more casual and their fries are the best GD thing I have ever tasted. Next to their brisket, of course.

Zarda's ribs are horrible. Great beans, good sanwich meat. I used to work in the Blue Springs location. Mike Zarda is an asshole.

Anyone tried Rib Crib? There is one in Independence and I think they have an all you can eat rib night. I thought about giving it a try sometime.

Alton deFlat 05-13-2009 01:15 PM

I love Bryant's and Jack Stack, and tried Winslow's a few weeks ago (it was OK), but at least this week I'm leaning toward Oklahoma Joe's.

Bates City.

Gdaddy 05-13-2009 01:55 PM

I am a "Till I die" supporter of Arthur bryants, you cannot change my mind unless you pay me and give me a lifetime supply of new sauce.

I have lived in New Jersey (raised in KC) for 10 years and NO ONE o ut here has a clue what good BBQ is. These people also believe Kansas City is in Kansas. I will tell you that I am a huge hit for BBQ's in my backyard, I typically do a "taste of KC" with Bryants, Gates and Jack Stack. I pay insane amounts to ship out God's BBQ sauce but it is well worth it. I miss the experience of going to Bryants. I will say that Jack Stack has been rising up the charts as of late, its a local favorite and my wife loves it. Maybe if I poured it on my.....wait...nevermind.....off topic...

You should all feel proud and blessed to be in the BBQ capital of the world. Anyone who feels BBQ is King somewhere else (St. Louis / Memphis) should be stoned to death..

KC native 05-13-2009 01:56 PM

LC's all the way. I grew up right next to there and I remember when his smoker used to be in the parking lot. Great stuff there.

Anybody been to Big T's? I've driven by it several times but have never ventured in.

I usually send people to Jack Stack when they come into town the first time since it has a safe suburban feel and good food overall. I grew up on their food (Smokestack to Jack Stack).

I like Gates sauce, but their meats are sometimes a bit chewy or tough.

I like Bryants, but think their sauce is a bit of an acquired taste because of the texture.

Johnny's in Olathe has excellent ribs.

I always enjoyed Haywards if I wanted to get in and get out quickly.

I've tried several of the other places, but never crave them. I like some better than others and will eat there, but never feel compelled to go out just to eat there.

Edit - is there any way to get Famous Dave's off of this list. Blah.

I used to eat at Big T's at least once a week. Some of the best burnt ends in the city.

Big T's isn't bad not just run of the mill for KC BBQ. Don't get me wrong its good BBQ and if it was anywhere in the world but KC it would be considered the best in town. But its still not an elite taste in KC, IMHO.

I'm an Oklahoma Joe's and Jack Stack guy, although I need to try the Smokehouse on 135th and Metcalf sometime.

Are you referring to my Famous Daves comment? I realize that this was from the Star's article and wasn't blaming you. I was just lamenting that with all of the great local BBQ in KC, why does Famous Daves need to be included.

Thanks for the tip on Big T's. I'll probably try it some time, but won't kill myself to get out there.

Back in the 80's, Smoke Stack in Martin City ruled. Even the one on the Paseo was excellent.

I've been, but not since the late 80s, early 90s. At one time their burnt ends [they call 'em brownies] were the best in the city. It's good, but they lost out to Keegans [pre going downhill, gettting bought out, going out of business, coming back and whatever else has happened to them] which was just a couple miles further down the road.

Don't remember any bad meals at Sneads, but it's been too long to have any firm memories beyond that.

As for the topic header, sorry guys, I may have gone over to the dark side, wiled by Bandana's charms. Jack Stack is a great splurge, but Bandanas has given me too many reliably great, economical, meals at this point.

I worked at a Rib Crib when I was 16. I can assure they are not the best ribs ever.

Not a terrible place to eat, but the ribs are average, and the brisket is usually dry as a bone. The hot links are good though.

Ebolapox 05-13-2009 03:53 PM

I've eaten at three of the places... gates, arthur bryant and rosedale. of the three, I prefer rosedale.

I hear ya.

I'm bout to go 'q it up right now.

Got some Fun-dogs and my KC Masterpiece. Still gotta pick up a loaf of Wonder bread and a bottle of ketchup.

Damn good barbecue.

Reaper16 05-13-2009 04:30 PM

The answer to overall best in KC is L.C.'s Bar-B-Que, though I wouldn't really disagree with someone who said Oklahoma Joe's. L.C.'s is more traditional, and does brisket a lot better (Joe's, on the other hand, is more consistent and does pork better).

Simply Red 05-13-2009 04:38 PM

Smokestack - been once, I was like 12.
Haywards - been once, I was like 14
Bryants - been like twice, I remember the sauce sucking.

so, I have to go w/ Gates over Zarda, Zarda is very inconsistent, well, their ribs are anyway. I'd give Zarda an edge on one of their good days, though.

i read that as 'Pickle-loaf.'

you ever had that, Gonzorox? I can still call you that, right?

Pickleloaf is delicious also. Throw on some KC Masterpiece on white bread, and it's BBQ time.

Same goes for Pimento cheese. As long as you put KC Masterpiece on your pimento sandwich; it's technically BBQ.

And yeah, you can call me that. I'm not too particular.

Simply Red 05-13-2009 04:47 PM

no 'Rustlers' option? :)

bevischief 05-13-2009 06:06 PM

No Spam...? Option?

stlchiefs 05-13-2009 06:11 PM

1. OK Joes (I still hate the name)
2. LCs
3. ABs
4. Winslows

Though these could all move up or down a spot any given day.

Sweet Daddy Hate 05-13-2009 07:54 PM

Mixed Plate w/ Brisket and Turkey = GOD.

I don't want my brisket slathered in Molasses-paste and melting in my mouth; I want that sonofabitch marinated 24 hours with rub, crispy on the outside, and firm enough to make you feel like your working a little bit.

And LC's Burnt Ends FTW!

Halfcan 05-13-2009 07:55 PM

I had some of the best smoked ham, chicken and turkey at ......

Novella's Soup Trolley
11400 E. Truman Road.

2bikemike 05-13-2009 09:00 PM

Personally I think Zarda's should have stuck to Ice Cream.

It seems to me that most of the BBQ joints tend to go downhill when they branch out. The Original Jack Stack in Martin City was damn good the few times I went. The one in O.P. sucked ass. Same holds true for Arthur Bryants the original is good but the one at Legends sucks.

Growing up in Rosedale I ate quite a bit of their Q but they tend to go up and down in quality.

SBK 05-13-2009 09:10 PM

Who cares about who's best in KC? The real question is which of these joints is willing to expand to Atlanta???

You can have Rosedale; that sauce is a blight on humanity.

I've never lived in or close to KC, but in the few times I've visited the metro I've been to Gates and Oklahoma Joe's. I found Gates to be mediocre...Okie Joes rocked my world! Proof positive that good things indeed do come from Stillwater, Oklahoma.

Honestly Mo, it usually contains a lot of BS vinegar (more Carolina-style) in it, like FMB! said, it's just nasty.

Oklahoma Joe's is so-named because owner Jeff Stehney first used an Oklahoma Joe brand smoker when he started competing. Through this, Jeff became friends with the owner of the brand. They decided to go into the restaurant business together. One Oklahoma Joe's was opened in Stillwater (HQ of the smoker compnay) and another in KCK. When the owner of the smoker brand sold the company some short time later the Stillwater branch was closed down. All of which is to say that I don't consider the restaurant to "come from Stillwater."

Wow, I'm ****ing encyclopedic.
