NFL fanbase by county

1 Attachment(s)
Saw this picture posted on facebook and thought it was interesting...NFL team popularity by county, based on the number of likes on facebook. Purely unscientific, but interesting nontheless

Molitoth 01-29-2013 03:25 PM

That's funny that Hawaii are all Steelers fans, lol.

Molitoth 01-29-2013 03:26 PM

I would think Buffalo has to have the smallest fanbase.

Amnorix 01-29-2013 03:33 PM

Lord, the Steelers have more of the Carolinas than Carolina.

Jets and Jacksonville look to be about the most pathetic in terms of "square footage owned". I'm surprised more of western Connecticut and parts of Vermont aren't Giants country, but the border for the New England states holds pretty firm for the Pats, other than the southwestern-most corner of Connecticut.

MahiMike 01-29-2013 03:33 PM

Wow, check out all the Chiefs fans in Atlanta. Who knew?

loochy 01-29-2013 03:35 PM

This doesn't work so well because they used the same color multiple times.

CaliforniaChief 01-29-2013 03:41 PM

I think Rikers Island belongs to the Raiders...

RealSNR 01-29-2013 03:42 PM

Alaska is dominated by.... Packer and Steeler fans?

...oooookay....

Rain Man 01-29-2013 03:43 PM

Wisconsin should just mass troops at the border and take over Michigan's upper peninsula. Michigan's era of colonial power is long past.

The Franchise 01-29-2013 03:44 PM

The Cowboys are like the plague.

So you're thinking genocide and then convert the area to winter wheat?

My guess is a big issue with this is sample size. In order for someone to be included in this, they have to 1) have internet access, 2) have a Facebook account, and 3) be motivated enough to "like" a team on there. I'd bet that's worth less than 1% of the population.

That's fine in big counties, but in a small county with only a couple thousand people, you'd only have 20 people in your sample. With that few people, you're going to get some weird effects.

silver5liter 01-29-2013 03:48 PM

think the chiefs line should bleed into oklahoma a little bit.

keg in kc 01-29-2013 03:51 PM

I don't think I ever met a single steelers fan growing up in wv.

Really? What were they? Redskins? West Virginia is kind of equidistant from several teams, but I would've guessed that Pittsburgh would've been the dominant choice.

If I remember right, you grew up in the far south of WV, right? Do you think that would make a difference?

ChiefsCountry 01-29-2013 04:33 PM

I bet the NFL would love for Mark Davis to sell the Raiders to Patrick Soon-Shiong and move back to Los Angeles.

Yeah, it was mostly Redskins in my experience. So much so that I was a Cowboys fan at an impressionable young age, simply to be contrary.

Northern Panhandle and Morgantown (where WVU is) I wouldn't be surprised if it was Steelers, close to Pissburgh, but Eastern Panhandle and southern part of the state where I grew up seemed all Redskins.

RedDread 01-29-2013 06:03 PM

I hate being red/green color blind, at first glance I thought all of Missouri was Chiefs fans and not even anyone it St. Louis County cared about the rams.

Holy Cow! I'm in the eastern panhandle and I can't swing a dead cat without hitting an F'ing Steeler fan!

There's even a ugly ass van running around my town painted up all in Steelers.

notorious 01-29-2013 06:38 PM

Bullshit.

SW Tip of Kansas is not a Dallas area. That is Denver Territory.

There's a lot of Viking fans in Iowa but that map makes it look like they dominate. In the Des Moines area, for example, I see A LOT more Chiefs gear than Vikings gear.

Jacksonville is such a sad, sad fan base.

okcchief 01-29-2013 08:18 PM

The colors make it impossible to read. The red in South Texas. Is that KC, SF or ATL etc?

Edit nm Houston is red too lol ****! Can't they use different colors for visual sake?

Hydrae 01-29-2013 08:29 PM

I think it is interesting that one county in the middle of Texas is Saints territory. If any where was, I would have thought it would have been Travis county (to the east of the one marked) where Brees went to high school.

Yeah, that is BS. Most people here are Rams, 49ers or Raiders fans. West coast teams (even though the Rams are no longer on the west coast). Not many Steelers fans.

I would also be very surprised of southern Virginia had that many Cowboys fans in what should be Redskins country. I lived in Virginia for a couple of years, and the Cowboys are hated there.

I see they made the Raiders color designation reflect their fans...easy to spot and black.

I moved to NC 4 years ago and the amount of Steelers fans shocked me, but it's like I tell people ...the fans here are all hardcore Panthers fans (as they say) until about week 6 when they realize the season is lost and then all of the sudden they switch to the Steelers or Redskins because "that's who always rooted for"

Surprising. The map shows the Jets have one county - Nassau County, Long Island.

Long Island stretches into the Atlantic Ocean.

I was thinking that Hawaii's love for the Steelers might have been largely in part due to Polamalu's fame.

Dr. Johnny Fever 01-29-2013 10:09 PM

Why in the hell is there a blue county right in the middle of all the red in Kansas? Is that Wichita?

It is funny because it is not true. There aren't many Steelers fans here.

As I said, it is not true. Hawaii is Rams, 49ers and Raiders country. I don't know anyone here that is a Steelers fan, and I've lived here for 21 years.

Since it is based on Facebook "likes" my guess is that it is a club of Steelers fans here that are probably temporary residents in the military skewing it. And there are military fans of every team here. If you go to sports bars to watch games (at 7 am) it is mostly military and every team has a group of fans. That is why I suspect it is one of those groups skewing the results.

EagleRob 01-29-2013 10:15 PM

Ya know, I've noticed that. I live in the Southeast corner of Iowa and Chiefs fans are relatively slim-pickens here. However, when I go to Des Moines area for wrestling tournaments or whatever, I constantly see people wearing Chiefs gear and am constantly thrilled because I'm not used to seeing it. I always go out of my way to say "what's up" to them. I'm always like, "whoa, a CHIEFS fan?! I'm a Chiefs fan too!!! Right on!!!" Most of the time they will give me a look like, "umm...yeah....so, what's your point?" When I see Chiefs fans in my area, they are generally as excited as me to run into another Chiefs fan, presumably because we aren't used to it. I have noticed that Des Moines area inhabitants are definitely accustomed to encountering fellow Chiefs fans... I don't care...I'll continue to act like an excited tourist when I see them.

I feel the same way here in northeast Oklahoma. I normally speak to no one when out in public...but if they are wearing Chiefs gear, I strike up a conversation in a second.

I live on the east side on North Carolina and that map is nails on in my area. The Steelers own it, the Panthers and Patriots are about even for 2nd place from what I have seen~

Not even close. The Cardinals have the geographically widest fanbase in the country and have for generations, as for years they were the most western team and KMOX reached across swaths of states.

That map is fairly accurate as far as Denver goes. Although the western third of South Dakota I'd put as Denver territory too. I'm a pilgrim living in a unholy land as a Chief fan in Western Nebraska near the Colo/Wyoming border. :(
