Sell me on Alex smith

I will admit, i do not know much of alex smith, not even when he was coming out of college. i do know that all i've heard out of San Fran for the past few years is how terrible Alex smith is until last year when he had (what it looks from the outside) a cassel 2010 type of season where he played game manager style football and relied on his defense.

Now I'm reading all sorts of reeruned bits about actually trading draft picks for him and skipping out on drafting a first round qb this year.

Is Alex smith just a game manager qb with a good coach in harbaugh?
Why does harbaugh start keepernick over smith if he is so good?

I'm not buying it.

For the first time in a long time we have our choice of the best qb in the draft (geno). We take him.

RealSNR 01-01-2013 02:14 PM

I would have considered it last year if Harbaugh came as part of the deal (of course using hindsight to know that Harbaugh is actually a pretty damn fine coach).

Now that we have the #1 overall pick there is nothing to sell on Alex Smith. He's worthless. Some chumped up franchise like Buffalo can have him when all the good QBs get taken in the draft

R8RFAN 01-01-2013 02:16 PM

Has anyone seen KC taking a QB in any mock drafts? I sure haven't, all I see is LB from Notre Dame

Yes.

The reeruned fan base rule of will only be good if we have a QB that was a former 49er and a first round linebacker.

Jesus H. Stop Dancing Christ!

This is going to be the 1990 Chiefs.

We are going to pick up Steve DeBerg (Alex Smith) and use our first round draft pick on linebacker Percy Snow (Manti Te'o).

If we can get Harbaugh to join Smith here, then do it. If not, don't.

The two best online mock drafts in the biz (Scott Wright's and Walter's) both have us taking Geno.

Alex smith isn't happy in his backup role. Do you think he would be a good locker room addition when he's pissed that he's getting the bench over a rookie?

Or would it create good competition?
I'd rather have a veteran mentor type of qb to help groom geno.

Why can't we pick up Smith and draft a QB in the first round? That is somewhat similar to Harbough's decision to draft Kepernick even though he already had Smith returning from a great season. Also not too different from Shanahan's decision to draft both RGIII and Cousins

Jesus Christ people. I think Alex Smith is Matt Cassel.

I'm reading morons all over facebook and twitter that we should bring him in and I think it is an incredibly stupid idea.

I wanted someone with this mindset to try and write out a justifiable reason for even thinking this way.... CoMo, etc?

Don't neg rep me for it. I AM ANTI ALEX SMITH, but I'm curious why the tards think we need to bring him in, because I admit I don't know much about the guy except for what I've seen in the media.

You get very little in upgrade over Matt Cassel with Alex Smith. It's a worthless discussion, because there is NO justification for Alex Smith to KC

If you have Smith you can afford to take a guy like Bray or maybe somebody else in the third or fourth that needs more seasoning. We probably wouldn't have to give up our first overall for him so we could draft Star or Teo and kill two birds with one shot.

Have I sold you yet?

Alex is at Number Seven in the final 2012 QBR between RGIII and R. Wilson. He had a very good 2011. He can make most if not all the throws. (Why do you think he was a top draft pick?). Smart. Good teammate. Coachable---at least by a good coach like Harbough. Looking to leave SF and would like an opportunity to start. That is what he'd get in KC so long as Pioli has nothing to do with the situation. Having said all of that, I would also like us to take a QB in the first round (after trading down a bit) or with the first selection in Round Two.

Forget QBr, forget that he's a good teammate, forget that he's coachable.

Do you want Alex Smith as your QB on a game deciding drive? Can he win you a game?

The answer is no, he can not.

Technically he did just that against the Saints in the playoffs last year. But usually, no, you wouldn't want him in there on a game deciding drive.

Have I sold you yet?

1) Tyler Bray won't last until the 3rd or 4th round. Some (soon to be sorry) team is going to spend a 1st or 2nd rounder on him.
2) By trading for Smith, you give up at least a 2nd or 3rd round pick (possibly both) and give up the opportunity to snag a quality player who is cheaper and younger.
3) The gap between Star Lutuli and Jon Hankins, Sheldon Richardson, Shariff Floyd, John Jenkins, Jesse Williams is no bigger than the gap between Geno Smith and Glennon, Barkley, etc. In fact, it's probably smaller.
4) Manti Te'o plays a non-impact position, is a below-average NFL athlete, and provides very little OVER the ILBs available in rounds 2-4.
5) Alex Smith just isn't that good. (Look at QB rating, and the way his coach regards him).

So, no, I am not sold.

Smith wasn't any good until last year. He has turned it around the last two years. That explains his relatively low career QBR. He is on the upswing Cassell had the good year with NE and then 2010. That explains his relatively high career QPR. Cassell is headed the other direction. However, you are ignoring (probably intentionally) the other point that some others and I are making. We are calling your first-round pick and raising you Smith. We think the QB position is so important that the Chiefs should attack the problem both ways. Get rid of Cassell and Quinn and replace them with Smith and the draft pick. Keep Stanzi around for laughs.
