It is a Nolan film. It is going to center around a male lead that is broken in some way, who will sacrifice himself to help others while also finding/fixing what is broken within.

While that fits for many movies, it fits for all of his.

You're the only person I've seen or heard say that.

It's like saying "Many people consider Return of the Jedi the best of the star wars trilogy."

Maybe, but those people don't count. :D

Memento is nearly the exact opposite of that, actually.

Gotta love Memento. I wish Nolan would go back and make another one of these brillaint smallish type films. I think they filmed Memento in under a month.

But yeah the "good guy" in memento is definitely broken and trying to fix himself/circumstances, but he is perfectly willing to sacrifice 'other' people in order to accomplish this, definitely not himself.

True enough. I haven't watched that in about a decade. I probably should.

The movie is pretty ambiguous, but that's not the impression I got. I took it as him using his brokenness to set up unsolvable puzzles for himself, perpetuating the problem, not trying to fix anything.

Oh, he solved them. One dead body after another.

But yeah I think sometimes he was puzzled, but other times he would figure out but then disremember. Like when he finally realized Teddy was using him to knock over drug dealers but there would also be times like he actually felt like he was investigating the "murder" of his wife, although he would also realize that he himself killed her at times. Just a great movie.
