After meeting for the first time Wednesday, Romeo Crennel and Bill O'Brien discovered they were a good match.

Romeo Crennel is expected to become the Texans' new defensive coordinator, according to league sources.
Crennel is committed to coach the East-West Shrine college all-star game Jan. 18, but when that task is complete, he plans to accept an offer to become O'Brien's defensive coordinator with the Houston Texans, according to league sources.

Crennel has been widely believed to be the favorite to become O'Brien's defensive coordinator because of their ties as former New England Patriots assistants. However, the two men had never worked together, and Wednesday's meeting was not only an interview but an introduction.

When their interview was completed, O'Brien extended an offer for the job. However, Crennel asked for more time to fulfill his commitment as the head coach of the West college all-stars in the East-West Shrine game without distraction.

Consequently, the Texans and Crennel had no comment. Any announcement on their pending partnership would occur after the East-West game, sources said.

One day after Crennel met with O'Brien, the Texans hired former Patriots linebacker Mike Vrabel to be their linebackers coach. Vrabel played under Crennel but also was Ohio State's defensive line coach. O'Brien was impressed with what he saw from the Buckeyes unit when he served as the Penn State coach for two seasons in the Big Ten, sources said.

This is Crennel's wheelhouse. He's a solid DC. I really don't believe that he will ever be anything more than that.

With the talent that Houston has on defense, he's going to be able to have some success with his schemes there.

Make sure to liquidate your holdings in 2016.

Maybe I'm just overly critical of him, but after the 2010 season, he was atrocious as the coordinator of this team.

I'm not a fan of the hire. O'Brien should have scooped up Horton or someone who runs an aggressive 3-4 to free up JJ Watt.

Is he going to put JJ Watts in a dress?

The Texans system worked because they were aggressive. Crennel hasn't been agressive since his Patriots days.

Never had single problem with Romeo the person, he always struck me as a good man who cares... but unless he revamps his philosophies, I'm afraid Houston will have a problem.

and the difference between Romeo sitting on his hands, not adjusting and getting by off rushing four guys versus Sutton doing the same exact thing is what exactly?

Crennel isn't aggressive anywhere outside of Golden Corral.

Bad franchises just do not get better.
