Red Bull Stratos - freefall from the edge of space
Live stream.
Looks like its going to be launched at 1130 est. Red Bull Stratos is a mission to the edge of space that will try to surpass human limits that have existed for more than 50 years. Supported by a team of experts, Felix Baumgartner will undertake a stratospheric balloon flight to more than 120,000 feet / 36,576 meters and make a record-breaking freefall jump in the attempt to become the first man to break the speed of sound in freefall (an estimated 690 miles / 1,110 kilometers per hour), while delivering valuable data for medical and scientific advancement. |
didn't they already do this?
I'm probalby wrong though. seems like I remember seeing a vid of it. |
Weather delay. Should be happening right now.

They did a high up jump a few months ago. I take it this is even higher~
LoL it sounds like the guy is freaking out a tad.
wish i had sound. damnit carl.
I'm sure all of us Chiefs fans are waiting for him to splat so we can cheer his demise.
pussies they are aborting
just cancelled
for the day, or just temporarily?
well that was anticlimactic
its ballsy and cool and all, but wtf? that is quite a bit of money and resources to pay to have a dude freefall from space when we already know you can do it rather safely in an aircraft.
free falling from space. not dangerous.
wind - dangerous. |
Gotta bump this. Launch may be happening in about 45 minutes.
The live stream is here> http://www.redbullstratos.com/live/ |
About to launch the balloon.
Balloon launched.
Still 2 hrs away from the jump?
Yeah, I'll check back in a bit. |
Should jump around 10:15am-10:25am PST, but if they decide to drop ballast past the jet stream they may be a little earlier...

I'm looking at some of the telemetry there and most of it means nothing to me, exceptions being that it's 66 below zero outside and in addition to climbing he's going east at 117 mph. Jet stream baby.
Pretty cool. For those watching, the old guy they keep showing in ground control is pretty much a badass.

Wow....balloon is only 1/1000 of an inch thick?
It's live on Discovery Channel if anyone, like me, is getting tourettes from watching the live stream.
"Hold On....I screwed up"
I'm going to guess that's not in the top 10 things one would want to hear in this situation |

Sounds like his internal heaters aren't working...
Face plate heater cranked up, but he's losing heat in his helmet... |

On a side note: Is it too late to tie a 'Fire Pioli' banner on this guy? |
So isn't it possible that he lands way off course?

That looked like Roswell's airport.
Where did they launch from? |
I wonder what the live pic delay is.
The guy in the studio with the Cut button better be pounding a 6 pack of red bull right now. |

There is an abandoned airport about 4 miles south of there, too. |
They just said he's 50 miles east of Roswell now. Sounds like he's just gonna land in the desert.
I like how they have that tread tape on the platform outside the capsule. Wouldn't want him to slip and, you know, fall off.

He's over Texas now...

"free fall from the edge of space"
Sounds a lot like the 2012 Chiefs. |
He's above 120,000 ft. Should be jumping any min.
That link doesn't appear to be working
starting egress procedures now
Discovery Channel is about a minute ahead of the link in post 17
127K feet, good luck Felix, happy landings
Getting close to jumping.
****ing jump already you goddamn ****stick.
Here we goooo!!!!
This is more exciting than the Chiefs game.
128,000 feet now
Another 28,000 feet to go?
dumping of cabin pressure.....forgot to quote Bug......that was in response to his ?
Losing altitude.
Yeah I must have misunderstood something there.
the capsule has been riding steady at 127K feet for a while now, they just have to be absolutely sure his suit is working properly before the cabin depressurizes or he could die almost instantly
door open
THE DOOR HAS OPENED!
**** that's awesome.
JIZZ |
is it just me or does this seem like one of those things that could go horribly wrong with millions watching?
NFL has to be sweating. This is facinating.
