Red Bull Stratos - freefall from the edge of space

Live stream.

Looks like its going to be launched at 1130 est.

Red Bull Stratos is a mission to the edge of space that will try to surpass human limits that have existed for more than 50 years. Supported by a team of experts, Felix Baumgartner will undertake a stratospheric balloon flight to more than 120,000 feet / 36,576 meters and make a record-breaking freefall jump in the attempt to become the first man to break the speed of sound in freefall (an estimated 690 miles / 1,110 kilometers per hour), while delivering valuable data for medical and scientific advancement.

Dayze 10-09-2012 11:30 AM

didn't they already do this?

I'm probalby wrong though. seems like I remember seeing a vid of it.

bevischief 10-09-2012 11:31 AM

Weather delay. Should be happening right now.

ct 10-09-2012 11:32 AM

Yes, they are filing the balloon.

Dayze 10-09-2012 11:32 AM

oh. ok.

hometeam 10-09-2012 11:32 AM

They did a high up jump a few months ago. I take it this is even higher~

MIAdragon 10-09-2012 11:39 AM

LoL it sounds like the guy is freaking out a tad.

Dayze 10-09-2012 11:40 AM

wish i had sound. damnit carl.

CaliforniaChief 10-09-2012 11:41 AM

I'm sure all of us Chiefs fans are waiting for him to splat so we can cheer his demise.

MIAdragon 10-09-2012 11:42 AM

pussies they are aborting

ct 10-09-2012 11:43 AM

just cancelled

Dayze 10-09-2012 11:43 AM

for the day, or just temporarily?

hometeam 10-09-2012 11:46 AM

well that was anticlimactic

tooge 10-09-2012 11:47 AM

its ballsy and cool and all, but wtf? that is quite a bit of money and resources to pay to have a dude freefall from space when we already know you can do it rather safely in an aircraft.

Dayze 10-09-2012 11:47 AM

free falling from space. not dangerous.
wind - dangerous.

JoeyChuckles 10-14-2012 08:54 AM

Gotta bump this. Launch may be happening in about 45 minutes.

The live stream is here>

JoeyChuckles 10-14-2012 09:29 AM

About to launch the balloon.

Dayze 10-14-2012 09:31 AM

Balloon launched.

redfan 10-14-2012 09:46 AM

Still 2 hrs away from the jump?

Yeah, I'll check back in a bit.

RINGLEADER 10-14-2012 09:52 AM

Should jump around 10:15am-10:25am PST, but if they decide to drop ballast past the jet stream they may be a little earlier...

chefsos 10-14-2012 10:05 AM

I'm looking at some of the telemetry there and most of it means nothing to me, exceptions being that it's 66 below zero outside and in addition to climbing he's going east at 117 mph. Jet stream baby.

Tchoupitoulas 10-14-2012 10:07 AM

Pretty cool. For those watching, the old guy they keep showing in ground control is pretty much a badass.

Old Dog 10-14-2012 10:09 AM

Wow....balloon is only 1/1000 of an inch thick?

ExtremeChief 10-14-2012 10:12 AM

It's live on Discovery Channel if anyone, like me, is getting tourettes from watching the live stream.

Old Dog 10-14-2012 10:18 AM

"Hold On....I screwed up"

I'm going to guess that's not in the top 10 things one would want to hear in this situation

Cool. Thx

RINGLEADER 10-14-2012 10:31 AM

Sounds like his internal heaters aren't working...

Face plate heater cranked up, but he's losing heat in his helmet...

No shit. That's not something you want to hear.

On a side note: Is it too late to tie a 'Fire Pioli' banner on this guy?

Buck 10-14-2012 10:49 AM

So isn't it possible that he lands way off course?

I think he's carrying a .45 in the event of landing behind enemy lines.

notorious 10-14-2012 10:57 AM

That looked like Roswell's airport.

Where did they launch from?

The Iron Chief 10-14-2012 10:57 AM

I wonder what the live pic delay is.
The guy in the studio with the Cut button better be pounding a 6 pack of red bull right now.

I was wondering the same thing. I don't know how they control that. When he was up in the jet stream his lateral speed was like 80 mph. While it was much less before and after, it was still like 15 mph and he'll have drifted for almost two hours by the time he jumps...

Cool, I have flown over that airport about 25 times on my way to Santa Teresa. They have a bunch of old airplanes parked all over the place.

There is an abandoned airport about 4 miles south of there, too.

RINGLEADER 10-14-2012 11:01 AM

They just said he's 50 miles east of Roswell now. Sounds like he's just gonna land in the desert.

chefsos 10-14-2012 11:02 AM

I like how they have that tread tape on the platform outside the capsule. Wouldn't want him to slip and, you know, fall off.

Don't want him to go into an uncontrollable death spin.

RINGLEADER 10-14-2012 11:29 AM

He's over Texas now...

Easy 6 10-14-2012 11:36 AM

"free fall from the edge of space"

Sounds a lot like the 2012 Chiefs.

Buck 10-14-2012 11:41 AM

He's above 120,000 ft. Should be jumping any min.

BigRichard 10-14-2012 11:47 AM

That link doesn't appear to be working

Old Dog 10-14-2012 11:48 AM

starting egress procedures now

Old Dog 10-14-2012 11:49 AM

Discovery Channel is about a minute ahead of the link in post 17

Ghost of Maslowski 10-14-2012 11:50 AM

127K feet, good luck Felix, happy landings

ghak99 10-14-2012 11:54 AM

Getting close to jumping.

Bugeater 10-14-2012 11:56 AM

****ing jump already you goddamn ****stick.

notorious 10-14-2012 11:58 AM

Here we goooo!!!!

notorious 10-14-2012 11:59 AM

This is more exciting than the Chiefs game.

Old Dog 10-14-2012 11:59 AM

128,000 feet now

Bugeater 10-14-2012 12:00 PM

Another 28,000 feet to go?

Old Dog 10-14-2012 12:00 PM

dumping of cabin pressure.....forgot to quote Bug......that was in response to his ?

notorious 10-14-2012 12:02 PM

Losing altitude.

Bugeater 10-14-2012 12:02 PM

Yeah I must have misunderstood something there.

Ghost of Maslowski 10-14-2012 12:03 PM

the capsule has been riding steady at 127K feet for a while now, they just have to be absolutely sure his suit is working properly before the cabin depressurizes or he could die almost instantly

Old Dog 10-14-2012 12:03 PM

door open

Bugeater 10-14-2012 12:03 PM

THE DOOR HAS OPENED!

notorious 10-14-2012 12:03 PM

**** that's awesome.
