Meet the new Conan.

http://a323.yahoofs.com/ymg/ymoviesb...s3EsEDMpgyt36W

Before he was the Terminator, Arnold Schwarzenegger was Conan the Barbarian. The 1982 film wasn't in the same league as some of Ah-nold's bigger hits, but it remains a cult favorite. Today, the first trailer for the remake, starring the formidible Jason Momoa in the title role, hit the Web.

Momoa, who will receive CinemaCon's Rising Star of 2011 Award, may be best known for his work on "Stargate: Atlantis" and "Baywatch." Several years ago, Momoa and Lisa Bonet made news after they named their child Nakoa-Wolf Manakauapo Namakaeha Momoa. Momoa's mother later explained that Nakoa means "warrior."

Should Momoa's version of "Conan the Barbarian" be a hit, interest in the actor with intimidation to burn is sure to rise. Indeed, he's already surging in the Search box. Over the past seven days, online lookups for "jason momoa" have flexed their muscles, jumping 44%.

You can check out the new trailer for "Conan the Barbarian" below. The film is scheduled to hit theaters this August.

As trailers go, that was pretty weak.

I hope the film isn't a disappointment.

keg in kc 03-12-2011 06:08 PM

Pretty weak for a first look.

Talisman 03-12-2011 06:14 PM

The pic looks more like a shot from Prince of Persia. The trailer looks like a teaser for a film coming out a year from now, not this summer. No real detail, shadowy generic scenes. Odd.

Deberg_1990 03-12-2011 06:14 PM

Looked like a Direct to DVD hit!

Talisman 03-12-2011 06:15 PM

Oh, and I clicked on the thread from the lounge and thought it was going to be about a new zany, wild-haired, late night talk show host.

Frankie 03-12-2011 06:15 PM

I don't know how good an actor Momoa is but he looks the part more than Arnold did. Though he obviously does not have Arnold's physique.

Conan was Arnold's best movie. Chick in that movie was KC native. SM east grad or something like that.

KcMizzou 03-12-2011 08:37 PM

I'm skeptical. I probably saw the original 20 times as a kid. But, hell, I'll give it a shot.

Frankie 03-12-2011 09:58 PM

A few years ago I got a good deal on the Conan series (see below) and bought it. Never have gotten around to watch any of it. Has anyone watched it?

I really liked that actor in Gladiator with Russell Crowe, so maybe it'll be a fun ride.

Let us know! :)

It was a great movie. It's also interesting about how they had to finish around Oliver Reed's death during the shoot.

Not being modern bodybuilder buff is why he looks the part more, nobody back then was built like Arnie.

But while they got that right, i'll bet anything they get the rest wrong... i smell a quick dvd release.

keg in kc 03-13-2011 02:10 AM

He looks the part fine, I'm more worried about how he sounds.

Never watched Baywatch. I liked him on Stargate Atlantis but I didn't think anything he did on there really screamed "lead actor in major motion picture".

He must be doing something right, though, because they wouldn't have hired him on Game of Thrones if he didn't have some chops.

This supposed to be Conan, not Hawaii's model of the year. Why does Hollywood always have to do this? What's next? Here is Conan going down the runway wearing a ravishing two piece.................. Give me a ****ing break.

Gotcha, some fanfiction art from a poster at deviantART should be taken as gospel over a creator approved image.

I read the entire series and saw all the cover art and nothing remotely resembled Mowgli or some runway model. If that's what puts a fire in your shorts spend your quarter. Maybe your Conan can do his rendition of bare necessities of life and fall on a banana while wearing a stunning rag made by Vera Wang.

LOL. In the absence of an ape intelligent enough to play a Hollywood speaking role, I think Momoa is more than a reasonable likeness to the character. And certainly not Fabio-like.

jspchief 03-13-2011 01:36 PM

This movie will suck. I'm sure they sacrificed plot and dialogue for the CGI budget. Just another Mummy/Hulk CGI abortion.

I don't know how you ever recreate what's in my mind when I think of the Conan series but at least give it the ol college try. Hollywood always seems to do it's very best though to take in a direction that just totally pisses on the memory. Whether it's taking a feeble child and making him Spiderman or it's taking America's next top model and making him Conan. Give me a break.

Conan the Barbarian was great because of the 3 villain roles. Ben Davidson and Sven Ole Thorsen were massive. It doesn't come close to the source material but it's enjoyable for what it is.

This new Conan movie looks okay but there's no way its going to be better. Ahnold's Conan had just 2 or 3 lines that were longer than a couple of words. they really played to his strengths. Conan the Barbarian had epic music from Basil Poledouris too. The new movie might suffer from depending on an unknown to take on the role and act.

JD10367 03-14-2011 07:23 AM

Apparently Momoa worked himself up to 225 or 230 pounds for the role. He's 6'4. It's not like we're talking about a tiny little guy here.

Even as far back as only 2000 years ago the most common man was about 5-6 to 5-7 (according to some program I watched either on history Channel or Discovery). All of those tall heroic looking Romans, for example, speaking with classic English accent on the screen wouldn't look and sound so awesome and imposing if we went back in time and met them.

Arnold was not that much of a known actor at the time he made CTB.

Also they do a good job with "epic music" and all the other stuff you mentioned if they put proper effort into it. You act with conviction like this is gonna be SciFi channel movie. We don't know yet the quality they aim to put out.

Sorry guys about answering the same post twice. But it occurred to me that only half a century ago, Jimmy Dean's lyrics of "Big John" referred to the "giant of a man" as " stood six foot six and weighed 2-45." Those are the numbers of an average (a bit lanky) linebacker on almost any college campus.

Just sayin'.
