Lost Points haunt Chiefs

PITTSBURGH -- They were the two touchdowns that got away.
Had either one of them held up in the third quarter, the Chiefs likely would have escaped the rain and wind at Heinz Field with a shocking upset of the Pittsburgh Steelers instead of falling 16-13 in overtime.

In the third quarter, with the score tied 10-10, quarterback Matt Cassel hit wide receiver Dwayne Bowe on a screen pass, and Bowe took it in for what appeared to be a 22-yard touchdown. But as the Chiefs celebrated a go-ahead score, they didn’t realize left tackle Branden Albert had been called for holding.

And shortly after that, linebacker Justin Houston scooped up a ball that left the grasp of Pittsburgh quarterback Byron Leftwich’s hands and returned it 21 yards for a touchdown. But ruling of a fumble by Leftwich was challenged by the replay assistant, and referee Carl Cheffers reversed the call, saying Leftwich’s arm was moving forward, and it was an incomplete pass.

“With this team, we haven’t been scoring a lot of points,” head coach Romeo Crennel said, “and to be able to score some, it was a good feeling. To have it taken off the board is a bad feeling.”

Albert is adamant than he was not guilty of holding as he sprinted out to block on the screen to his side of the field.

“I felt like I didn’t hold,” Albert said. “I don’t know what they saw. I blocked my man. That’s what I do. They seen what they seen. I know what people on TV seen. … It didn’t feel like a hold, but I can’t criticize the referees.

“Dwayne made a great play, it was a great call, and I felt like that would have helped us out.”

Compounding the disappointment, Ryan Succop finished the drive by missing a 33-yard field goal, his second miss from inside the 40 in two weeks.
“You’d like to think your kicker can make them when you get in makeable range,” Crennel said of Succop, who also missed from 39 yards last week at San Diego. “He’ll tell you he just screwed it up.”

Succop, who atoned for the miss by sending the game into overtime with a 46-yarder at the end of regulation, said just that.

“I just pushed it,” he said. “I missed one I’ve got to make, I should have made. When you come to Pittsburgh, you always hear about the open end of the stadium. That’s no excuse, I still should make the kick.”

Still, the Chiefs thought they went ahead when Leftwich, under pressure, lost the handle of the ball, and Houston took it in for the score. The Chiefs defenders were called for a 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct as they celebrated what they thought was a defensive touchdown.

“I think he fumbled the ball,” said outside linebacker Tamba Hali. “He meant to throw the ball, and the ball came out of his hand. Then again, the ruling was the ruling.
“That should be our mind-set going in from now, to score on defense. Good teams get to do that.”

But instead of the Chiefs taking a 17-10 lead, the Steelers, on the third-and-7 incompletion, got a first down because of the celebration penalty.

“The replay officials make a ruling, and there’s nothing you can do about it,” Crennel said. “Evidently the players felt they had a touchdown on the field. They didn’t. As a result of the celebration, we gave them good field position.”

There are significant things other than points lost on the Chiefs.

siberian khatru 11-13-2012 09:32 AM

This franchise has been missing the points for a long time.

Hey, lets run the same 2 plays to the right side for the entire game, no chance the best defense in the league will figure that out...........

Hey, we've just gotten a big turnover.........let's run it up the gut.

Playing for the tie doesn't work you ****ing numbskulls...........

heh, id love to know the percentage of Chiefs fans who were actually rooting for the chiefs to win?

Ill admit, The Albert hold was a poor call, but it didnt phase me at all. I just have no emotion for this team anymore.

"Lost" aptly describes the entire history of this franchise. I wonder if my therapist can tell me why I torture myself like this?

The Steelers don't have the best D in the league, with an average or good QB, the Chiefs could have carved up that D IMO.

Crennel's ending quote implies that the celebration would have been ok if the officials would have ruled it a fumble. Hey dumbass, it still would have been a 15 yard penalty assessed on the kickoff --- how about addressing the lack of discipline when everyone knows at this point that you can't celebrate like that.

I get that it's been a difficult season for the players, and they're trying to have fun which in turns allows them to play loose (and better). But you can't be stupid about it.

This is a nutshell sums up the season along with Mr Cassel's impressive wounded duck INT less than a minute into OT

With all our stupid penalties and miscues we have become the Raiders.......UGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

That holding call on Albert was horse shit. Should have been 6. Oh well.

I found myself halfway rooting for a win last night. Only because I have a couple Steelers fan friends that were giving me hell. I kept telling them I was rooting for a #1 draft pick and that I hated Cassel, and they kept giving me shit every time the Steelers did something good. So it was funny to see us pound their pussy asses for the most part. We basically won that game imo...without quite winning lol.

Yep. A typical "losers victory."
