austin meadows sounds intriguing

Prison Bitch 06-06-2013 03:47 PM

I remember everyone worried Moose was not going to be signed before the midnight deadline, and when he got his 4M everyone was so exicted.

7 years later, Wish now that he'd have never signed the deal.

gblowfish 06-06-2013 03:57 PM

Draft Colt Griffin AGAIN. I'm still waiting on him to become the next Nolan Ryan....

Deberg_1990 06-06-2013 04:04 PM

Chiefsplanet meltdown around 7:30PM??

Or Not a sh*t was given?

DJ's left nut 06-06-2013 04:08 PM

What the Royals could really use is a nice college pitcher that could be here in a year or two. At that point, they could at least try to extract some value out of the young hitters on the roster before they leave/decline.

Otherwise, they're just drafting for the next rebuild and they're already really thin in the high minors.

That said, this draft really only has a couple of college pitchers that look like they're worth taking that high and I figure they're both going to be gone by the Royals pick. So if I'm KC, I look for a HS outfielder here.

alnorth 06-06-2013 04:14 PM

The draft starts at 6PM central, BTW.

Good Point.......Dayton might go for best available "most ready" player available since he knows he will be gone soon.

penbrook 06-06-2013 04:29 PM

Heard its gonna be Phil Bickford.

Other teams believe that the Royals have reached a deal to take right-handed high schooler Phil Bickford with the eighth overall pick, Peter Gammons reports (Twitter link). Bickford, who is committed to Cal State Fullerton, hasn't been evaluated as No. 8 pick material -- Baseball America ranks Bickford as the 20th best prospect in the draft,MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo has him at No. 26 and ESPN's Keith Law (Insider subscription required) has him all the way down at No. 55

penbrook 06-06-2013 04:37 PM

Bickford doesnt even have a breaking ball.

Prison Bitch 06-06-2013 04:38 PM

But I thought the owner gave Dayton all the money he needed to develop players?

Pepe Silvia 06-06-2013 04:41 PM

Will the Royals take Leon Sandcastle with their first pick?

Let him go to college and then take the draft pick for next year? Saves money in the pool for later rounds this year?

No, I believe they only televise the first round. Not sure about the 2nd.

Rudy tossed tigger's salad 06-06-2013 05:04 PM

Well last year the Astros passed on Buxton, who looks like he's going to be a major stud. Though Correa is no slouch himself and I think he came cheaper which allowed them to sign some HS studs.... We'll see. Wish there was a can't miss college prospect at the top, but oh well.

Rudy tossed tigger's salad 06-06-2013 05:07 PM

Kohl Stewart > Bickford

heck no. After the 2nd round, it'll be a conference call that you can listen to online. They really zip through the picks quickly after the 2nd round.

The fact that you can't trade picks (except for a few of the supplemental 1st rounders) probably makes it easy.

alnorth 06-06-2013 05:12 PM

Appel got paid. Saying no to the Pirates at #8 last year actually paid off.

SPchief 06-06-2013 05:12 PM

Apell goes 1

Yep, really risky move last year.

SPchief 06-06-2013 05:14 PM

LMAO, Reynolds on MLB network says he wouldn't be suprised if Apell were in the big leagues by july, of THIS YEAR.

Rudy tossed tigger's salad 06-06-2013 05:15 PM

ROFL

Its the Houston F'ing Astros. He is 100%, rock-solid, mark it down, GUARANTEED not to be up before mid or late-May 2014. Even if he turns out to be Nolan Ryan right this moment, it'd be a waste of a year to bring him up this year.

Interesting....I don't understand why MLB doesn't try and hype it up more like the NFL has done? At least the first round. I guess college baseball isn't nearly as popular as college football so there is no awareness built in.

I'm surprised they didn't go to commercial for the Chiefs pick this year.

penbrook 06-06-2013 05:52 PM

They just had s commercial 30 seconds before.

That guy had him in the 40's and doesn't belong in the top 10.

ShowtimeSBMVP 06-06-2013 05:57 PM

keithlaw ‏@keithlaw 13s

I had Hunter Dozier ranked 38th in this draft class. The Royals just took him 8th.

BlackHelicopters 06-06-2013 05:57 PM

Experts say this is a reach. FML

alnorth 06-06-2013 05:58 PM

We're obviously signing this guy way, way, way under slot.

We'll have to wait till the end of the 3rd round to judge this one, because now we ought to be able to sign anyone who falls way, way over slot.

Kidd Lex 06-06-2013 05:58 PM

And we could have had him easily our next two picks...

penbrook 06-06-2013 05:58 PM

Analysts are saying he is a good hitter but cant play short. Thats fine he can play third. Some people compare him to Tulo.

MeatRock 06-06-2013 05:58 PM

Nope. Terrible pick.

alnorth 06-06-2013 05:59 PM

They are now talking about what I alluded to. If we save 1 or 2 million, then thats money we can throw at someone else later.

This isn't the NFL. Trying to sign 3 or 4 quality guys instead of 1 guy who is better than all of them, 1 about the same, and 1 or 2 who are worse is now a legit strategy in MLB.
