Sadly a lot of Newsgroup providers are now submitting to DMCA takedown requests. You won't get in trouble but a lot of posts that are there cannot be downloaded because the content was taken down. Giganews offers free VPN service with their newsgroup subscription fwiw, although they are far from the cheapest.

Newshosting has SSL, which is as good of an alternative, and they are only $10/mo for unlimited.

I download tv shows from private, invite only torrents. I download movies and music to my seedbox in GB and transfer those over a encrypted binary FTP connection.
