9th YEAR IN NFL/5th WITH BILLS
COACHING EXPERIENCE: Enters his fifth season as the Bills defensive coordinator with the majority of the defensive starting lineup returning…over last two years, Gray has molded the Bills into one of the most powerful attacking defenses in the League…in ’04, his defense finished in the top five in the NFL in touchdowns allowed (29), yards allowed per game (264.2), passing yards allowed per game (164.0), sacks registered (45) and led the League with 39 turnovers forced…Gray orchestrated a major defensive turnaround in 2003 when his defense finished the year ranked second in the NFL in total defense (second against the pass, eight against the run)…his defense also ranked fifth overall in points allowed in 2003…joined the Bills as defensive coordinator on February 7, 2001…prior to that spent the previous four seasons as an assistant at the Tennessee Titans, including the last two as defensive backs coach…helped Tennessee finish as the NFL’s #1 ranked pass defense and total defense in 2000 and also guided two All-Pro starters at each position in the Titans secondary…originally started with the Titans as the defensive assistant/quality control coach in 1997 before being elevated to the defensive backs position…broke into the coaching ranks in 1995 as the defensive backs coach at Southern Methodist University.

Buffalo is 28th in the NFL in offense and 14th in defense and the only reason that defensive rating looks that decent is because nobody bothers passing and just runs it down their throats and shortening up games by grinding the clock. They are dead last against the run. I'm not going to argue that he isn't the type of guy I would expect Peterson to hire but he sure as hell isn't a guy I would want. Buffalo's struggles might not have anything to do with his coaching ability but I want a guy coming in who has been recently exposed to winning and success as the odds are much greater they can come in and duplicate it.

you mean like Gunthers first go around or DV stint as HC. DV came off a SB and IMO if it wasnt for Dante the 13-3 season would have been 9-7ish.

As a 'scheme' guy this is the schem on D i would want to see.Young and motivated.
and theyre still better than kc even w/ takeo out.

Exactly and I sure wouldn't want to further compound those mistakes with another.

id still rather have young blood whos been in as a player and coach and who came up in a bona fide system that works and is working in the nfl now 3 teams off the top of my head run it today.

Jerry Gray was in TN for the SB run.what makes that diffrent from DV?

new blood - new system -

I want new blood and new system also I just don't see anything in this guys resume to date that says he is worth the risk of being saddled with another 3 or 4 year mistake. That is the problem when you making a coaching change, nobody is willing to admit mistake and make a quick change even when it is obvious so one hiring mistake punishes the fans and team for 3 plus years usually.

As for being a player...that honestly doesn't matter to me. They use to think that was a big deal and a non-player was unheard of but now they are learning that the only thing that really matters is intelligence, football knowledge and leadership skills. Charlie Weis is a good example.

Not sure exactly as to who I want at this point but I don't want to take a risk on a guy who is a DC that is the worst in the NFL at stopping the run. We have had enough of people running over us at will in the last few years to last me a lifetime...don't need any more of that.
