Django Unchained

Saw this last night. LOVED IT.

Kinda long (its almost 3 hours long) but it is really entertaining and really funny.

Has anyone else seen this yet?

Rexx 12-26-2012 09:24 PM

I was thinking of checking this movie out...looks pretty solid, but was wanting to get some thoughts from other Tarantino fans first.

KurtCobain 12-27-2012 12:42 AM

Going to see it this weekend.

I don't really care for the title of that thread so I'm going to post my review in here after I see it.

I went to see it last night. The sound would cut out every once in awhile, but you kind of got used to it. They paused it at one point and came in to tell us that they were going to reboot the sound to see if it helped. It didn't. They came in and offered for us to go over to the theater where it was just starting and to give us free passes. We were about 45 minutes into it at this point, and the show just starting would have gotten out later than I would have liked, so we just got our free passes and left. I like what I've seen of it so far. :)

DrunkBassGuitar 12-30-2012 08:07 PM

If you like Tarantino movies, you'll love it. It is what it claims to be, 3 hours of Jamie Foxx shooting slave masters in the face. If you go in expecting a period piece discussing the complex relationship of slavery in antebellum southern states, you'll be disappointed. If you go in expecting Inglorious Basterds, you won't be disappointed.

And aside from some of DiCaprio's trademark ACTING, every performance is great. I'm a big Christopher Waltz fan now.

I liked it, but there were a couple of very uncomfortable scenes. Some solid humor, good acting, and overall entertaining.

Ehh I have no desire to see it do to the language. I'm all for traditional cussing, but it's going to be an uncomfortable movie due to the use of the N word.

"Uncomfortable scenes" like when he's hanging upside down and it shows his cock and balls? Or when the guys holds onto it to cut them off? lol

A friend I went with said, "Tarantino gets a little more over the top the older...err...fatter he gets." There was some over the top killing, but it was really good.

Really? I didn't find it offensive at all, and I think it was 'due' to the overuse of the word. Of course, I'm white. I remember thinking that you could get shitfaced in no time by playing a game where you drink every time they say it.

Actually, the two that stood out were the dogs/slave scene and the fighting for sport scene.

Lots of people walked out at the cock and balls scene

Yeah, my stomach turned a little at the dogs/slave scene, too. I don't know. Maybe he was just trying to hammer the point of how slaves were treated back then. He did push the envelope a few times.

That's kinda a dick thing to do to everyone else in the theater. I bet people leaving probably blocked the view of some people who wanted to check out the twig and berries!

Yeah, can't really argue with that. Kinda felt like "Oh here's the obligatory Tarantino cameo." And then it just went on too long. But it's a very minor thing. Hell of a movie.

Deberg_1990 01-07-2013 09:50 PM

I almost feel like its a given now with QT movies, but the soundtrack was really good and well utilized. Everything from Jim Croce to hardcore rap.

Django action figures anyone? Would you buy or are they offensive?

http://www.thewrap.com/movies/articl...-outrage-71951

Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained" has already been the subject of criticism for its bloody violence and frequent use of the N-word, but now action figures from the film are causing the next wave of outrage.

he National Entertainment Collectibles Association, Inc. (NECA) -- a company that has produced toys for movies including "Hunger Games," "Predators" and "Rocky" -- partnered with the Weinstein Company to release eight-inch tall figurines for sale on Amazon and people aren't happy about it.

Also read: 'Django Unchained' Debate Rages Among African-Americans: Is It Entertainment or Abomination?

Najee Ali, director of the advocacy group Project Islamic Hope, told AP that the collectible line of movie merchandise is "a slap in the face of our ancestors" and is hoping for their removal from the market.

And unlike Spike Lee, who refuses to watch Tarantino's latest out of respect for his ancestors, Ali wasn't opposed to Tarantino's depiction of slavery or use of racial slurs in the revenge tale. He admits to seeing it twice, but feels the plastic personifications of the characters in the film "trivializes the horrors of slavery and what African Americans experienced."

So far, customer reviews on Amazon agree.

"Slavery is not something to play with," one of many comments in the same vein read. "These toys will fall in the hands of people who may think it is ok to mimic how slaves were treated. Please take these dolls off the market."

Others, however, don't have any issue with the figurines portraying Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, Samuel L. Jackson, Kerry Washington and others who starred in the movie.

"If fans of this film want to collect memorabilia and action figures based off of a movie they enjoyed, it is a far stretch to say that the makers of this movie are attempting to make money off of slavery," one supportive collector wrote. "There is nothing racist about making a toy based off of a character from a movie."

Also read: 'Django Unchained' on Pace to Be Tarantino's Biggest Box Office Film Ever

As the racial debate over "Django Unchained" continues, the movie is raking in big bucks at the box office. With over $108 million accumulated domestically, Tarantino's latest is on pace to become his biggest success yet at the box office.

Due to the sensitive subject matter, it is on track to becoming Tarantino's most controversial, too.

The Weinstein Company did not immediately respond to TheWrap's request for comment on the action figures, while NECA responded with no comment "at the moment."

lcarus 01-09-2013 12:47 AM

It irritates me that people find the language offensive. It's a movie set in slavery times for ****s sake. Great movie. And while I LOVE Tarantino's choice of music in damn near every movie he's made, and love the music in this, there was admittedly a bit too many scenes with music in this.

Samuel L was ****ing awesome in this too.

I would just like to point out that I have been on the planet for half a century, and this is a sentence that comes up rarely. If you have ever heard or used this sentence before, it would be interesting to know the context. It sounds unique enough that it should be placed on a city monument somewhere; you know, a militiaman on a horse with a powder rifle, or something, with the words "LOTS OF PEOPLE WALKED OUT AT THE COCK AND BALLS SCENE" engraved on the bottom.

Watched this movie last night. Loved it. It was a great movie, better than i thought it would be, TBH. I went in expecting blood and guts, instead i got a great, all around movie. I woke up thinking about the movie....that's when you know it was a good film.

Heard Samuel Jackson on the radio a cpl days ago, and they asked him if he had to get used to people referring to him as the n word.
He said: It's just a ****ing word. It really shouldn't hold the kind of power that we give it by gasping at the thought of uttering it.
Edit: at the thought of White people uttering it, I think he meant.

Pablo 01-27-2013 04:26 PM

Very entertaining film. Waltz killed it. Jamie Foxx was great. Enough violence to satisfy anyone's desires. Some scenes were a little difficult to watch; but still great all around.

Music selection throughout was top notch.

Ace Gunner 02-02-2013 10:01 AM

I liked it. lots of flying meat :D was surprised how late it was when I got home, I don't usually sit through long films very well, but hey, it's tarantino. his lengthy films are worth the sit. of course, I'm a huge spaghetti western fan and this film doesn't overplay that style, just a few necessary edits gave the film some flavor from the sixties leone style cinematography.

Man, I usually don't care much for Tarantino movies but this one was great.

Buck 05-05-2013 09:52 AM

I liked the movie, but I was sorta upset when it went full Tarantino in the last 40 minutes.

Re: DiCaprio - I don't dislike the guy, but I just can't see him as the 'swoooon' that others seem to. He's no Clooney or Pitt. Really like him in The Departed. But the rest of his roles, I get that apocryphal 'Hey's that's DiCaprio playing a part' patina on his performances. Moreso than even Cruise, who occasionally, rarely but occasionally, disappears into a role.

MLF is his best performance

LotM is his best movie, Michael Mann and James Fenimore Cooper saw to that. LotM is one of those movies I can not only watch every time it comes on, I can completely immerse myself in every time it comes on. It's just so beautiful and tragic and emotional. Such a great movie.
