they have a feature that attempts to explain Dennis Miller's obscure references...is this sad or what...part of a web page devoted to explaining the meaning of a sports announcer (I use the term loosely) ramblings....

Yeah, I've followed the link from ESPN a couple of times. They really haven't revealed anything astounding at this point although some of the history around his references is sometimes interesting. I'm convinced he cans MOST of his material in the week prior to in anticipation of topics that may arise. I also think he still has writers working for him & that's hard for me to respect. I much prefer off-the-cuff remarks.....

Phil, I agree, most of his remarks are canned and seemed forced...I don't like it either...but the interpretaitons given by Britannica.com are rather humerous...example:

"FRST QUARTER


Referring to: The enormous size of the Chiefs's offensive line.

Miller said: "It's like following Sequoias."

The reference: To the massive conifers of the cypress family, native to northern California and the Pacific Northwest, also known as redwoods, and sometimes including the giant sequoia or "big tree." Taking 400 to 500 years to reach maturity (with some living more than 1,500 years), redwoods are the tallest living trees, reaching heights up to 368 feet (112 meters). Sequoias are named after the Cherokee Indian Sequoyah, who created the Cherokee writing system in the early 1800s.

What Miller might have meant: It takes some professional sports figures much longer than 500 years to reach full maturity."

And you are right, the history behind the references is interesting.
