My little foray into wealth last night.
Just had to mention this. I went to a business party last night, and it was at a very upscale condo, quite swanky and architecturally distinctive. I'm nosy, so I looked up the assessed value. It was about $1.7 million, which actually seems cheap for this place since it was very, very nice.
The furnishings didn't seem that livable, and I was curious who actually lived in the place. During a conversation, one of the hostesses told me. It was a family that has a mansion a couple of miles away, but they bought this condo just as a place to host parties. Okay, got it. This is a $1.7 million private clubhouse. They bought a $1.7 million condo just to hold parties. Then I got the tour. It had a lot of art in it, and there was a piece upstairs over a couch by a particular artist that I recognized. He's a somewhat obscure artist, but I knew the name and I was thinking, "Wait a minute". So when I got home I did a little searching. That painting - the exact painting that was over the couch - sold at auction a couple of years ago for $1.2 million. That piece was about 36" x 48". And they had two more pieces by the same artist that were enormous. At the same auction where the small painting was sold, another painting by this artist sold for over $60 million, so there's a high end that's pretty high. And one of the big paintings looked suspiciously similar to another one that auctioned off for $20 million. And that was the one artist that I'd heard of. There were two more pieces that the knowledgeable art people were oohing and aahing about that I suspect may have been similar in status. And the thing is, I've never heard of the owners. It's some finance dude and his wife. There's some serious money walking around in this world, and it's not just famous people. It's really kind of amazing to see what some people out there can afford to do. I really should have gone into finance as a career. Anyone else ever wander into a display of wealth like this? Let's hear the stories. |
theres a ton of hidden big money families in denver

You had an Apricot BMW. Wealth is not a new concept to you.

I once made $1000 off a spin on a slot machine in Vegas.
I felt wealthy. That's my story. |

Wish I could just throw some color spots at a canvas and find someone with "fine taste" to give me 60 million Benjamins.

I went to the kroenke wedding several years ago in Columbia.
they spent some bucks on it, estimated at ten million... On a wedding. But it was ****ing great Posted via Mobile Device |

How'd you get invited to that? Are you a Walton? And did anything in particular stand out, like perhaps a limo made out of solid gold or something? |
I have never understood people paying that kind of money for paintings.
Suppose it could be considered an investment, but still. I can understand the party condo far more than that. |

the reception was in a three story tent. Wolfgang Puck catered it. We drank more alcohol than was drank at a Coors family wedding that took place around the same time. They have a room that is totally covered in marble. the whole thing was a great experience. We had a ton of fun. Posted via Mobile Device |
Several wedding magazines called it the wedding of the year.

I live in Olathe. I bought a new Harley back in 05 and took it out for a spin. Headed out Santa Fe (west) and just kept riding. My God!! I could not believe the McMansions that are out that way - past Olathe.
Then I read where, at least at that time, that KC had more millionaires per capita than most other cities in America. Could have fooled me.... |
Paintings are most likely fakes.
|
It isn't a mansion unless it has a bowling alley. :)

These weren't. Unless possibly they were reproductions while the real paintings were in a vault. These people had a lot of money and they spent it on art. |

It's ridiculous when you think about what you're actually buying. That said, as long as there's a market and you think it's going to appreciate, you're right. It's an investment that you can enjoy. But it sure seems like an artificial market. I guess, though, for these paintings in the stratosphere of pricing, it's not like the market will collapse due to a recession. The people who can pay $1.2 million for a painting don't get affected by recessions except on paper. And people this rich will always pay for something that brings prestige or impresses people. |
This thread has really inspired me. I'm making a drawing right friggin now while I still have beer left. I do my best work when I have beer.
Rainman, were any of those paintings in crayon ? That's all I have at the moment. |

Two were pastel and one was hog semen. No crayons, unfortunately. |

Please. Party condo. More like swingers condo so the neighbors dont know.

When I first moved to LA, I met a girl at the bar whose family OWNS a major US bank. First I went to their Beverly Hills mansion for a party. Which was insane.
Then I went away for the weekend with her to the family's "Beach house" in Malibu. The beach house was a $40 million compound. It was in ****ing sane. Acres of land. I went for a run in the back yard. I got back in and asked "where's lily?" "Oh, she's in the other wing." That's when I went outside and realized that this massive mansion I'd been in was actually 1/2 of the whole house. Disturbing wealth. |

That's pure crazy. Crap hanging on your wall worth 100x more than your entire house that you don't even live in? I do not understand.

Not quite as 'fancy' but I have been a few times out to MO state Senator Mike Kehoe's farm. It is MASSIVE, with its own horse arena, and Im not talking a little corral, I am talking a full covered, full size arena with all the stalls and everything you need for an entire herd of high dollar horses. An extremely valuable classic horse buggy collection, housed in its own spotless barn. A giant house of course, with a guest house with 20 foot ceilings, completely bad ass setup with bedrooms, lofts, and he has catering staff that work in the giant kitchen in the guesthouse to feed us. Go out (you have to ride out on a 4 wheeler or gator since its so far) a bit farther and not only does he have millions of dollars in farm equipment/buildings he has a skeet shooting deck that looks over his private valley that runs along over a mile of river.
Must be nice~ |

No idea what it's like to be stinky rich but back in the heyday of IT I owned a 5 bedroom house that one bedroom stored my kayak, mountain bike and fly rods. Besides the room I slept in there could have been a vagrant living in the others for all I known for how much I visited them.
Give me a bed, office and couch and I'm happy. It becomes futile at some point IMHO. Land for the dogs and a small ranch any day. It is fun to see the other side but hell if I want to keep it up. |

Welcome to my house :)
Fortunately almost no one knows what they are looking at so it seems just odd eclectic junk to most. Nothing in the individual millions. I've been in some places with killer stuff. It's pretty unusual to see people with any sort of taste. |

I was in Scott McNealy's house on the Pebble Beach golf course during the 100th US Open. I knew it was worth a ton of money. It was very nice but there was no obnoxious display of wealth. He did have a rocking wine collection and the food and drink at the party was all 1st class.
The only other time was when I flew business class and was put up in the penthouse at the Furama Hotel in Hong Kong back in 1995. I sent some clothes to be cleaned and everything come back with ribbons and boxes around them like they were brand new from a store, even my underwear and socks. The room service was incredible and I had a limo at my disposal. |
I could take you to 3 ranches that were purchased for 65 million, 37 million, and 35 million.
The first ranch, the owners spend around 3 weeks out of the year there. The second ranch, the owners spend 1 week a year there. The third ranch, the owners haven't set a foot on the property. They viewed it from a helicopter and made an offer and haven't been back. None of them are celebrities. They make me feel poor! :D |
Let's not get gauche here...

My art collection consistences of the "Rat Pack" playing pool that hangs in my basement. I'm never home and the women is the same way. It's a place to sleep, cook and take a peaceful dump. How often do you look at paintings? Not being a smart ass but seriously, would you miss them after seeing them so much if someone stole them? I know, I'm a rube. |

My first idea of how much money was out there, was my first trip to one of the more modest yards that had at least 30 yachts in the 100 million dollar range. and 100 or more at, at least, 50M.....that was 1 yard.....1. There are 1000s of them in those yards at 20M+. How much dough do you need to have a Fn boat that costs 20M?....Take a guess. There are A LOT of people, with A LOT of money. Its staggering. |

Guy I was in the Army with grew up on Long Island, lived down the road from Jimmy Connors. I stayed with his family for a week.
Grandfather had made a fortune in lumber and passed it to his kids. Many many millions each. My buddy was definitely the black sheep of the family. No million dollar paintings but he had a good friend who dated Maria Carey through high school. His fiance babysat for the head of props as NBC studios so we got a kick ass tour of the place and tix to the Letterman show (when still on NBC of course). My sister was Will Shields live in nanny for a couple years after becoming friends with his wife while going to college at KC Wesleyan. Never got to take advantage of that situation though. Thats all I got. |

She called me the night before the 1997 Playoff game with free tickets because some of Will's family wasn't going to make it. Couldn't go because of the short notice and my wife was sick. Thank God I didn't. I did keep his number on my little caller ID thing for like a year. I was shocked it showed up and wasn't private. Anyway she got to go to Hawaii for the ProBowl with them 1 year and she spent a month in Europe with his wife's family, she was from Denmark. Very cool down to earth people. His wife and kids came to my sisters grad party. Will was out of town on business.. |

I had a similar experience last year. A parent from my kid's soccer team invited everyone over for an end of year party. When we got to his neighborhood it was like, "They live here?" Huge houses with giant grand entrances and pricey landscaping. His house was huge, and nice. I knew his wife was a high level exec at JC Penney and he was some kind of exec but I had no idea that had that kind of dough. He dips and wears a scrubby T shirt and shorts all the time.

That entire condo is probably treated like a business expense.
I have some wealthy friends but nothing like that. Some times its just crazy. Like the time a private jet flew me to Iowa City for a football game. The drive is only 2 hours or so, but this way we could drink as much as we wanted. WTF |

There are so many different "worlds" out there. Right under our noses. My son being on the junior golf tour, we rub elbows with tons of rich folks. From pros kids to Palm Beach socialites.
Just finished one w/Anna Kournikova's brother. His mom was like straight off the Russian boat. Hot like Anna. |
